Tariq Lamptey and father land in Ghana to watch Black Stars game & meet Otto Addo

The former Chelsea youth star has arrived in the country to hold talks with the Black Stars technical team ahead of a possible nationality switch

Brighton and Hove Albion defender Tariq Lamptey has arrived in Ghana ahead of a much anticipated meeting with Ghana Football Association top hierarchy and Black Stars technical team, AshesGyamera.com understands.

The 26-year-old touched down in Ghana with his father and was welcomed by some nuclear and extended family members.

He is expected to meet Ghana FA president Kurt Okraku and Black Stars coach Otto Addo in a final meeting before Ghana host Madagascar in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar on Wednesday in Cape Coast.

Lamptey is believed to have opted to play for Ghana where his parents come from since he has little chance of representing England at the senior level.

The Three Lions currently have Trent Alexander-Arnold, Reece James, Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier, James Justin, Kyle Walker-Peters, Tino Livramento among others in the right back position.

Therefore, Lamptey asked England U21 coach to drop him from the squad last week ahead of a game since he wants to weigh the option on playing for Ghana.

“He’s asked to be left out of the squad for a bit of head space. He’s not switched, it’s not cemented or anything like that,” England U21 boss Lee Carsely said in an interview.

“But he’s had an approach (from Ghana), we have to respect that.

“We’ve made it clear how important we see him to us. I know the seniors have as well.

“It’s not something that we’ve given up on. Tariq is fully aware of how important we see him.”

Carsley added: “I’ve definitely got to give him a bit of space now. We’ve got a squad of players there that are desperate to play for England.

“I wouldn’t want to leave one out to bring one in that’s unsure, I don’t think that’s fair.

“But the opposite to that is Tariq is a big player for us and we see a real future for him within the pathway, so I’ll definitely be going back to him.

“He would be a big loss. We do have some really good right-backs but that doesn’t mean we should become blasé about our players.

“We see Tariq as an important player for not potentially only the senior team but the 21s as well.”

Last season in the Premier League, Lamptey made 30 appearances and recorded two assists for Brighton.

Pictures: Black Stars continue with intensive training ahead of Afcon qualifiers

The Black Stars continued with their fine tuning on Sunday with almost a full house in Cape Coast

There was a lot of positive vibes surrounding the Black Stars when they continued with their preparations for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Central Africa Republic.

Almost every player called up by coach Otto Addo was present including captain Andre Ayew and his brother Jordan Ayew.

Also, debutants Augustine Okrah and Hearts of Oak youngster Daniel Afriyie Barnieh as well as Wakaso Mubarak were all around.

The coaches were impressed with how the players composed themselves in the tasks given them as tactics and formations to be used against Madagascar in particular on Wednesday.

During training, Andre Ayew appeared to have picked up a knock after a challenge from Gideon Mensah but he quickly brushed it away.

Ayew later continued with the session. Wakaso Mubarak who has also been without a football game for almost six months had a wonderful training.

Per our sources, Wakaso may start against Madagascar and Augustine Okrah will likely make the final 23 matchday squad to be used on Wednesday.

Otto Addo has been hugely impressed with Okrah’s output at training and he is ready to give him a chance to make his bow.

The team will depart Ghana on Thursday to Central Africa Republic to play the second game of the group.

Division One: Kotoku Royals on the verge of securing Premier League qualification, Tamale & Nsoatreman to the wire

With only two matches remaining to end the season, Samatex have already won Zone 2 and booked their place to play in Ghana Premier League next season.

However, Zone 1 and 3 are still undecided. The race in Zone 1 is now between Tamale City FC and Nsoatreman FC as the two clubs are tied on the same points.

Interestingly, the head to head between the two clubs are the same as both home and away games ended 1-1 in Fiapre and Tamale respectively.

However, in Zone 3, Kotoku Royals have taken a one-point lead and will be declared new Premier League club if they win their last two games.

However, there is a very daunting task ahead of them which may hinder their progress.

On the final day of the season, Kotoku Royals will travel to Tema Sports Stadium to face Tema Youth in the top of the table clash.

Tema Youth who have 58 points after 28 games are just a point behind Kotoku and a win for them will mean that they will leapfrog their visitors to occupy the summit and book their way back to the Ghana Premier League.

Meanwhile, a draw on final day between Tema Youth and Kotoku Royals will give Liberty Professionals who are third on the log also with 58 points the chance to qualify with a win in their last game.

Therefore, any of Kotoku Royals, Tema Youth and Liberty can be declared as the winners of Zone 3 on final day of the season.
