2018 VGMA predictions: Who wins what tonight?

The biggest awards ceremony for musicians will be held finally on Saturday and deserving winners will be smiling, while others will be disappointed but need to gather courage and still hope for the best in future

By: Evans Gyamera-Antwi

It’s another successful year in the music industry and as usual, some hardworking musicians and other related people, will have their works finally rewarded for the efforts put in.

Without mincing words, the Ghana Music Awards is the biggest award scheme in the country amid the controversies surrounding it every time and this year’s program will be the 19th edition. The awards night is expected to be held today (April 14) at the Accra International Conference Center (AICC).

Interestingly, this will be the first time since 2014, that Shatta Wale will be making an appearance in the list of nominees following his banter with Charterhouse who happens to be the organisers of the program. In his comeback, he had six nominations and the biggest amongst them is the Artiste(s) of the Year.

However, there are other high-profile names in that category including the 90’s bad girl Ebony Reigns of blessed memories, Stonebwoy, Sarkodie and reigning champion Joe Mettle and winning won’t be that easy for the Ayoo hitmaker.

There were other musicians who had massive breakthroughs including King Promise, KiDi, Kuame Eugene, etc and many ‘underground’ artists would relish to one day obtain a portion of their luck amid their hard work.

Here, Editor-in-chief of AshesGyamera.com, presents his predictions after painstakingly going through the list and how each musician fared in the period under scrutiny, and believes the highlighted names below will be crowned winners.

Efia Odo wants change of lifestyle after Ebony’s death

Fast-rising Ghanaian actress Andrea Owusu, known in showbiz as Efia Odo, has admitted that she had similar lifestyle like the deceased Ebony Reigns and although, they have clean hearts society see them as bad influence.

Efia Odo enjoying the scorching sun

Odo believes it is now time to have a change of ways and has advised Ghanaians to show love to people like herself since they need guidance in order to make it in their lives.

“I was no better than Ebony [so I need change of ways]. I was just like her,” Afia Odo told Live FM.

” I live a fun, free, bubbly life. That’s how Ebony was. She wasn’t a bad person.

“You didn’t know the purity of her heart. If you needed her to ‘change’ maybe if you guys had preached with love, she could have been better.

She added: “People look at people like us and think we’re bad and judge us but we’re not bad. We’re just in the world and we’re trying to find our way. We just need guidance. You guys need to bring love to us.”

AshesGyamera understands that Efia Odo has joined Maker’s House Chapel recently, in a bid to become a born again Christian.

I shouldn’t have said I can end Ebony’s career, Bullet admits

The CEO of Ruff Town records, Bullet, has admitted that he made a terrible blunder after revealing weeks ago that it will be suicidal for the late Ebony Reigns to part ways with his record label since he can end the dancehall diva’s career with the slightest of an effort.

This came up when rumours started spreading that young and talented musician was looking for means yo free herself since she wasn’t too comfortable with the contract she signed two years ago.

However, Ebony, 20, met her untimely death together with her friend and a bodyguard last week, after returning from a visit to her mother in Sunyani.

A section of Ghanaians began to point accusing fingers on Bullet, insisting that he had a hand in the unfortunate incident.

“I have regretted saying ‘I can destroy Ebony’… I’m just human and I’ve no power to do that,” Bullet told Kasapa FM.

“The talent was given to her by so I have no authority to say I will destroy her talent.

“I didn’t just lose my money invested in Ebony but an asset as well as a result of the accident,” he added.

Ebony who had a successful music season in 2017 was ranked as one of the top artist to clinch several awards during the 2018 Ghana Music Awards after releasing several hit songs including Date your Father, Kupe, Hustle, Maame Hwe and Sponsor.

According the CEO of Zylophon Music, Nana Yaw Mensah, his outfit met Bullet two days before her untimely death to negotiate her buying out clause of $100,000 since the musician was bent on leaving Bullet’s camp due to several reasons she gave them.

The family of Ebony will meet on Sunday to observe her one week celebration after her demise and set a date for the final funeral rites. It is unclear whether she will be paid to rest in Sunyani Abesim or Accra.

Prophet Afrann accuses Ebony’s former manager Bullet after her death

According to a pastor called Prophet Cosmos Walker Affran on social media, the death of the dancehall diva on Thursday has some link to her former manager Bullet.

Reports recently in the local media indicated that Ebony had parted ways with Bullet who invested $10,000 in her career and the manager revealed that it will be suicidal and can bring down the career of musician if she decides to leave his Ruftown Records.

Although, it is not clear what role Bullet played in the accident that took the life of Ebony, her friend Franky and a soldier who was a bodyguard, the pastor indicates the former manager has several answers to give after their demise.

The Cape Coast-based pastor also indicated that Ghanaians should fast three continuous days for the vice president of Ghana Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia who was recently flown to London for treatment.

I would’ve stopped Ebony from travelling if she told me – Rev Owusu Bempah

Rev Owusu Bempah has disclosed that he would’ve stopped Ebony Reigns from traveling to Sunyani if she had told him of her plans.

The man of God, who revealed earlier this year that a popular musician will die before the year ends, says he had a close interactions with the deceased Dancehall diva few months ago and even advised her to seek his thought before travelling outside Accra.

According to Owusu Bempah, he stopped several trips Ebony had planned between Christmas and New Year since she would’ve had accidents during that period.

Ebony together with her friend and a soldier died wee hours of Friday, after their jeep collided with a VIP bus at Nsuta near Bechem in the Brong Ahafo region after she had gone to visit her family in Sunyani.

“I took Ebony as my daughter and always advised her. I saw that her life was short on this earth and even told her to inform me before she leaves Accra to any place and she was doing exactly that,” Bempah told After 2 FM in Bechem.

“Unfortunately, she didn’t tell me about this journey. I didn’t know anything about it until I was told she had had an accident in her way back to Kumasi. It is sad but something could’ve been done about this to preserve her life,” he added.

Ebony, 20, had a wonderful moment in 2017 after releasing hit tracks Kupe, Date your Father, Hustle, Maame Hwe and Sponsor. She was highly tipped by music connoisseurs as a favorite to win Artist of the year in the 2018 Ghana Music Awards.

Ebony, who was single and without a child before her untimely death, was expected to travel to United States in the coming days for a show.

Musician Ebony involved in a gory accident in Bechem, pronounced dead by eyewitnesses

The 90’s baddest girl has just been involved in a serious accident in Bechem (Nsuta) on her way to Kumasi, AshesGyamera> can confirm.

Known in real life as Priscilla Opoku Kwarteng, the dancehall diva according to our checks, went to Sunyani for personal business and also took time of her busy schedule to meet some of her family members who stay in Abesim, a suburb of Sunyani.

The accident which happened around 3am was so serious that it claimed three people at the spot, with reports indicating that the fast-rising musician could be one although, some reports have also debunked it.

A call placed to Bechem Hospital confirmed that the musician has been brought there but they failed to confirm whether she is dead or alive.

However, our checks have confirmed that a military man and little girl who were involved in the accident was pronounced dead on the spot.

“Ebony could not survive it. She is dead because from what I saw, she is not alive,” an eyewitness said.

“She was hugely damaged and it is serious. May God protect her,” the eyewitness added.

Ebony was tipped to win 2018 Ghana Music Awards artist of the year after releasing Kupe, Date your father, Sponsor and Hustle.

Ebony had more nationwide hits songs than Shatta Wale, Bullet argues

Ebony Reign’s manager Bullet of Ruff and Smooth fame has rejected suggestions that Dancehall King Shatta Wale had more hit songs than his client and deserves the 2017 Artist of the Year in the upcoming Ghana Music Awards.

Last week, Shatta revealed in an interview that Ebony must pray that his troubles with award organisers Charter House will not be settled and prevent him from partaking in the awards else, she will be unable to pick the enviable artist of the year.

However, Bullets believes Shatta’s efforts in the year under review would’ve carried enough weight if it was between 2013 and 2016.

“If it were the year 2013, 2014, 2015 or 2016, I would’ve said Shatta [Wale] is right but Shatta knows that in 2017 Ebony did a lot more than he did,” Bullet said.

“Shatta never had like five hits songs [as compared to Ebony].

“When you say major hits, Shatta had ‘Ayoo’ and ‘Taking Over’ and later in the year he had ‘Freedom’. The track ‘Forgetti’ is a normal hit and he knows it. ‘Forgetti’ is not bigger that ‘Taking Over’ and he knows it. It’s ‘Ayoo’, Taking Over and Freedom, making it three hits in 2017.”

He added: “Ebony had ‘Poison’, ‘Sponsor’, ‘Date your Father, ‘Hustle’ and ‘Maame Hw3’ in 2017. I mean let’s be real, Shatta, if it was like last year and last two years he would be right but now, I don’t think so.”

Shatta Wale has been banned from the awards since 2015 after he launched a scathing attack on the organisers for an alleged foul play.

Ebony should pray Charter House don’t nominate me for 2017 VGMA, says Shatta Wale

Ghana’s hottest ‘commodity’ in music currently, Shatta Wale, has advised new sensation Ebony to pray without stopping in order to win the 2017 Ghana Music Awards’ Artist of the Year accolade.

According to Shatta Wale, if his pending case against the award organisers is settled, there is no way Ebony will be crowned artist of the year despite her incredible hard work in the year under review.

Ebony started 2017 with hit song Kupe, before she released Sponsor, Date your Fada and Maame Hwe, which is doing very well in the new year.

“Ebony is my girl and I really love her and what she is doing but as for the artiste of the year, unless they don’t nominate me,” Shatta told Okay FM.
“It will be the only reason before she can win. So she should just pray they don’t nominate me,” he added.

Shatta Wale beat Ebony to win the People’s Celebrity Award artiste of the year in 2017 last month, with his hit songs, Taking Over, Forgetti, Ayoo, Hossana, Umbrella and Freedom.

Shatta won the 2014 edition of the VGMA but has since been ban from the event following a feud between him and the organisers, resulting into verbal attacks.
