Ghanaian Ahmed fails to win WBO World title after suffering Knockout

Ghana’s Habib Ahmed’s aim of becoming the WBO Super Middleweight champion was dealt a huge blow as he was defeated via a Knockout by the sixth round against defending champion Gilberto Ramirez at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas on Sunday.

Ramirez, who prior to the bout, boasted an enviable statistics of 36 fights with 24 knockouts and without a defeat, made sure the Ghanaian’s dream came to an abrupt end at least for now.

Between the first and third round, Ahmed showed a glimmer of hope as he blocked several punches from Ramirez and although, he threw few punches in return, they also caused some problems for the Uruguayan.

The Ghanaian even had an advantage when a clash of heads opened up a cut above the left eye of Ramirez but the defending champion mopped up a well-rehearsed strategy to prevent Ahmed from capitalising on his injury.

By the fourth and fifth round, Ramirez’s performance was on the ascendancy while Ahmed’s performance surprisingly took a terrible nosedive. The latter couldn’t throw more punches this time and resorted to blocking the heavy punches from Ramirez and winding down the time while running around in the ring.

Things looked falling apart for Ahmed in the sixth round, and despite his resistance initially, his corner threw in the towel to accept defeat and prevent damages to him as referee Lawrence Cole stepped in and halted the fight. The fight was stopped at 2:31 of round 6.

Ramirez has now increased his records to 25 knockouts and has revealed that he wants to face middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.

#Breaking: Augsburg terminate Daniel Opare’s contract after gross misconduct

German Bundesliga side FC Augsburg have officially terminated the contract of Ghana defender Daniel Opare despite having six months left.

The 27-year-old was reported to have tried to force his way out of the club and even held talks with some Premier League clubs including Leicester City in the just-concluded January transfer window, but the deal fell through in the eleventh hour.

And Augsburg have told him to leave freely, although his contract was expected to expire in August, after joining them from Porto in a three-year deal in 2015.

“Right-back Daniel Opare will not be in the squad of FC Augsburg for the match against Eintracht Frankfurt, which takes place on Sunday, February 4, at the WWK ARENA,” a club statement read.

“FC Augsburg stands for values such as down-to-earthness, teamwork, reliability and honesty. Most recently, Daniel Opare has repeatedly violated these values.

“For this reason, the FCA have withdrawn its offer of a contract extension of expiring at the end of the season contract. In addition, the FCA have informed the 27-year-old in a personal conversation that he can look for a new club at short notice,” the statement added.

Sporting director of Augsburg, Stefan Reuter, revealed that Opare has been lying to them on countless times as he meets agents and officials of other clubs.

“Daniel Opare has repeatedly lied to us despite the confrontation with facts,” he told Reuters.

“Furthermore, he has repeatedly violated the code of conduct within the team and he has to leave, ” he added.

Kumasi Girls SHS female tutor died by hanging – Autopsy report

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has said that an autopsy conducted on a 33-year-old female tutor at the Kumasi Girls Senior High School indicated that she died by hanging.

This revelation from the Police came after relatives of Vida Frema Bonsu had expressed doubt about earlier reports indicating that she had committed suicide, and demanded further investigations into the cause of her death.

The family of the late Vida Frema, who was on Monday, 29 January 2018, found dead in the room of her police boyfriend at Konongo in the Asante Akyuem Central District of the Ashanti Region has called on the Ghana Police Service to institute a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to her death.
The family believed there is more to it than what the police have told them, and suspected a foul play in an attempt to cover up their colleague.

According to Konongo Divisional Police, the woman was found with a rope around her neck hanging on the ceiling in her boyfriend’s house, dead.
Police also discovered a cut on her lower arm and a blood-stained knife at the corner of the room.

Speaking in an interview with Otec news’s Isaac Nsiah Foster who visited the deceased family residence in Ejisu Krapa of the Ejisu Juaben municipality, on Thursday February 1, 2018, the father of the deceased, Nana Bonsu, said the boyfriend (Sgt. Bright Opoku) sent a message to them on the day that Vida had been involved in an accident and died.

“We heard that when our daughter had gone to visit her boyfriend at Konongo, an argument ensued between them over what the deceased described as cheating, following a marriage agreement between the police officer and another woman and that resulted into a scuffle leading to her death,’ he narrated.

Nana Bonsu said when they went to the Konongo Police station, they were told that Vida had hanged herself in the policeman’s room after a short misunderstanding on Sunday night which made her boyfriend lock her up in the room for work and came to found her mortal remains.

“So which one should we believed now, the boyfriend’s statement that she died through an accident or she hanged herself? There is something fishy and we believe strongly that she was brutally murdered by her boyfriend, so justice must be rolled down,” he told the reporter.

“Checks at the Steward Hospital mortuary at Yakwei revealed blood stains on her dress, a rope mark on her neck, which suggested that a rope had been tied to it, there was no cut on her body but blood stains were found on her white dress. An autopsy report also revealed she was strangled, so we insist that her boyfriend (Sgt. Bright Opoku) killed Vida,” he revealed.

But a statement issued and signed by Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Fred Adu Anim on Friday February 2, 2018 indicated that “an autopsy report has indicated that cause of death as hanging”.

The statement also added that some stomach content from the deceased has been given to the Ghana Standard Authority for analytical tests since there was an indication that the deceased might have ingested some poison before hanging herself.

Meanwhile the Police Officer who was arrested in connection with the death has been granted bail.

Illegal miners in Ghana must be shot, says MP Joe Wise

Ghana’s first Deputy Speaker of Parliament and MP for the people of Bekwai Constituency, Osei Owusu popularly known Joe Wise has made a damming suggestion to the government on how to deal with illegal mining also known as Galamsey in the country.
