Which Ghanaians have donned the iconic Black Stars #3 jersey in the last two decades?

Which players have worn the iconic jersey in the last twenty years and who made it more popular?

For the past two decades, only four players have worn Ghana’s (Black Stars) jersey number 3 at a major tournament.

• Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour
• Louis Agyemang
• Asamoah Gyan
• Baffour Philimon

During the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations, former Hearts of Oak midfielder Emmanuel Osei Kuffour was the one wearing jersey number 3 while Baffour Gyan was donning jersey number 17. However, after the tournament, Gyan took over the #3 and used it for several friendly games.

Baffour Gyan, who was a striker but wearing #3, made the jersey quite popular due to his breathtaking goal celebrations especially his break body celebration – something his junior brother Asamoah Gyan later learned.

Asamoah Gyan took over the jersey #3 from Baffour Gyan but during 2006 Africa Cup of Nations held in Egypt, Gyan was ruled out due to injury so the jersey was handed over to former Hearts of Oak striker Louis Agyemang who was then playing for South African club Maritzburg United.

Asamoah Gyan later took over the jersey the same year – when Ghana played in its first-ever Fifa World Cup held in Germany and made name with it. He scored the country’s first-ever goal of the competition, missed the country’s first-ever penalty and also scored the fastest goal of the tournament.

Due to Gyan’s incredible goal celebrations at the tournament, something he learned from his senior brother Baffour Gyan, his jersey number became popular because only defenders, especially left-backs, used to wear jersey #3 years back.

Gyan further used the jersey at 2008 Afcon hosted by Ghana. He went on to use it at 2010 Afcon, 2010 Fifa World Cup, 2011 Afcon, 2013 Afcon, 2014 Fifa World Cup, 2015 Afcon, 2017 Afcon and 2019 Afcon held in Egypt.

Interestingly, for the first time since 2006, a defender will be using Ghana’s jersey number #3 at a major tournament after Dreams FC right-back Philimon Baffour took over since Asamoah Gyan was not named in the final 28-man squad to represent the country at the upcoming 2021 Africa Cup of Nations holding in Cameroon.

Ghana’s iconic jersey #3 has predominantly been worn by either Baffour (Gyan), Asamoah (Gyan) or Baffour (Philimon).

All the best to Team Ghana who will play their first game at the 2021 Afcon on Monday, January 10 against Morocco.

“Hearts of Oak were very lucky against Bechem United,” Okrah rues missed chances

The forward feels he and his teammates could not punish the Phobians enough as they shared the spoils on Sunday

Bechem United forward Augustine Okrah has insisted that Hearts of Oak did not deserve a point in the Ghana Premier League matchday eleven game played over the weekend at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Although, the game ended goalless, Okrah who lasted 86 minutes before he was replaced with believes Bechem should have carried the day since they outplayed the Phobians and had several opportunities.

However, Okrah as well as Emmanuel Avornyo and Hafiz Wontah Konkoni fluffed the opportunities that came their way.

“We could’ve won all three points against Hearts this afternoon,” Okrah posted on Twitter after the game.

“However, half a loaf of bread is better than none. They were just lucky

We leave Accra with our heads in the air like goal kick,” he added.

Okrah further heaped praise on 16-year-old midfielder Clinton Duodo who tormented the Hearts defenders throughout the game and was also adjudged the Best Player of the game.

“Well done Clinton [Duodo], you’re a superstar in the making. Next is RTU in Bechem,” tweeted.

Okrah rejoined Bechem United from Asante Kotoko at the start of the season following the expiration of his contract. The 28-year-old has had an incredible start to the campaign as he boasts of six goals and three assists in eleven games.

King Faisal 2-1 Gold Stars: Osman & Zubeiru’s goals push Faisal to joint top of GPL log

The Inshallah Boys made it two wins on a row at home as they have now moved to joint top spot of the log

King Faisal defeated Bibiani Gold Stars 2-1 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday to go joint top of Ghana Premier League log.

Faisal coach Nurudeen Amadu maintained his starting line up that eliminated Asante Kotoko from the FA Cup in midweek while Gold Stars made two changes in their squad.

Both sides struggled to create decent chances in the opening embers of the game as most of the action was centered in the midfield.

On the 20th minute, Baba Yahaya went past his marker and played through Osman Ibrahim who calmly sent in his effort past onrushing goalkeeper Hammond Amon Nii Kalala to put Faisal ahead.

Faisal doubled their lead by the 35th minute after Zubeiru Ibrahim tapped in a cross from Osman

However, a mistake by Pius Baffour was capitalised on by Gold Stars striker Charles Gyamfi Kamara to pull one back.

After the break, Mawuli Wayo and Yahaya fluffed several clear point chances.

Substitute Emmanuel Sarkodie saw his long range shot deep in additional time narrowly missing the target.

Faisal have now moved joint top of the league log with 23 points, same as city rivals Asante Kotoko.

They will travel to Techiman next weekend to play Eleven Wonders on matchday 12.

Prosper Ogum outlines SECRETS behind Kotoko’s famous victory over Aduana Stars in Dormaa Ahenkro

The Porcupine Warriors boss has shed light on how he masterminded his side to record a famous win over their nemesis in Dormaa Ahenkro

Asante Kotoko coach Prosper Ogum Narteh has for th first time this season admitted that he was satisfied with his players’ performance following their 2-0 win over Aduana Stars in Ghana Premier League.

The Porcupine Warriors after a shocking elimination from FA Cup silenced Aduana with goals from Cameroonian striker Georges Mfegue Rodrigues and Richmond Lamptey.

“I’m very satisfied with the performance and win. It is very joyous if you make history,” Ogum said after the famous win.

These Kotoko supporters showed something ‘wicked’ after the win over Aduana Stars

“These genes have been there over the years and we’ve been able to break them. Kudos to the boys. As I told you before the game, I told them that the threat, the intimidation, the fear outside the field will come but they need to stay focused.

“And they did so by sticking to the game plan and if you see the way we played we were very confident on the ball. We were very confident without the ball. We kept to our game plan keeping the ball on the turf, looking at the pocket of spaces and playing the ball through,” he added.

Kotoko, prior to the game, had failed to pick a win in all their previous eleven meetings in Dormaa Ahenkro and had only scored once.

However, they currently have the bragging rights and lead the league log with 23 points, three points above Aduana and King Faisal although the latter have a game in hand.

“Everything was in a mess,” Aduana Stars coach Bediako blames players after Kotoko defeat

The Ogya Boys were stunned at home by their fierce rivals and Asare Bediako blames his players poor attitude for the loss

Aduana Stars coach Asare Bediako has slammed his players poor attitude in their shocking 2-0 home defeat to Asante Kotoko in matchday eleven of Ghana Premier League at home.

After winning seven games on a row, Aduana failed to recover from their defeat to Medeama last weekend as they were punished by Asante Kotoko in front of their home fans.

Kotoko had failed to pick a win in Dormaa Ahenkro ever since Aduana made their appearance in the top-flight prior to the game but goals from Georges Mfegue Rodrigues and Richmond Lamptey did the damage.

“I am very very sad today because I was not expecting such a result,” Bediako said after the game.

“Kotoko took over the midfield. Honestly, I am disappointed in my players because they didn’t play the way we wanted them to do.

“Everything was in a mess. You see we were forced to make a change as early as possible. Eric Kwakwa couldn’t kick and hold the ball the way we wanted him to do. His tackling was poor and that’s why we changed him.”

” It’s a big blow to us having lost to King Faisal here too. We are supposed to be winning our home games,” he added.

Aduana 0-2 Asante Kotoko: Mfegue & Lamptey’s goals stun Aduana as Kotoko pick first-ever win in Dormaa Ahenkro

The Porcupine Warriors picked their first-ever win over Aduana Stars in Dormaa Ahenkro thanks to a goal each from each half of the game by George Mfegue and Richmond Lamptey

Asante Kotoko defeated Aduana Stars 2-0 in the top of the table clash of Ghana Premier League at the Nana Agyemang Badu I Park in Dormaa Ahenkro on Saturday.

Kotoko coach Prosper Ogum Narteh ringed two changes in his starting line up that lost to King Faisal in midweek as he paraded a relatively new squad to the league leaders.

Defender Andrew Appau whose mistake led to the goal that eliminated Kotoko from the FA Cup was dropped and his place was taken up by skipper Abdul Ganiu Ismail.

Also, youngster Augustine Agyapong was handed his maiden league start for Kotoko to replace Sherrif Mohammed.

However, Cameroonian strikers Etuoga Mbella Frank Thierry and Mfegue George Rodrigues led the attack despite their poor showing against Faisal.

After a barring quarter hour in the game where chances were at the premium for both sides, Kotoko began to press their hosts with Mbella and Mfegue causing troubles.

Kotoko finally had their noses in front by the 19th minute when Mfeuge rose above his marker to meet a teasing cross from Imoro Ibrahim which he perfectly headed it in beyond the reach of goalkeeper Joseph Addo.

The goal marked Mfegue’s third of the season as the Cameroonian continued what has looked like a fairly good start to his stay in Ghana.

Aduana came close to equalise by the 32nd minute when Emmanuel Gyamfi sent in a long cross but Sam Adams’ last ditch effort was saved by goalkeeper Danlad.

Two minutes later, Kotoko’s Mudasiru saw his long range effort been denied by the woodwork as Aduana continued to live dangerously.

After the break, Daniel Bio and Yahaya Mohammed were ever present in their search for equaliser but Danlad Ibrahim stood between them and a goal.

With five minutes remaining Aduana’s Abass Mohammed had a chance to draw even but Danlad saved the situation with a wonderful block before Bright Agyei’s rebound could only hit the side net.

Richmond Lamptey finally found an opening and doubled Kotoko’s advantage on 90th minute to silence the vociferous home supporters who were anxiously awaiting an equaliser. The goal obviously left Aduana devasted.

How Asante Kotoko players and coaches left Dormaa Ahenkro

Kotoko have now picked up their maiden victory on Dormaa soil since Aduana qualified to play in Ghana Premier League in 2009. The win also means that Kotoko lead the league log with 23 points, three points above city rivals King Faisal who will host Bibiani Gold Stars on Sunday.

‘Aduana Stars and Asante Kotoko must serve Ghanaians good football on New Year Day,’ says Antwi

Former B.A United chief executive officer Ransford Antwi has called on the leaderships of Aduana Stars and Asante Kotoko to tone down a bit ahead of this weekend’s big game at the Nana Agyemang Badu I Park in Dormaa Ahenkro.

According to the CEO of Sunyani-based Suncity Radio, George Gyawu and Nana Yaw Amponsah should spent time on the phone to talk about how the two clubs can sell a good game to local and international football fraternity, with the potential to attract more corporate sponsorships into our game.

He further stressed that Ghana is still in the festive mood and therefore, expects Aduana to welcome the Fabulous Boys to a beautiful reception at Dormaa.

” Since we’re in the festive season, it would be nice for George and his guys to go the extra mile to give their great rivals to a proper reception that will shame the devil’ he said.

Mr. Antwi went further to state that the two big clubs who occupy first and Second positions respectively in the on going GPL owe the football fraternity a great game on Saturday, and has called on both sides to focus on football and the opportunities it can create for our people. They must serve as worthy ambassadors of our beautiful game and not to resort to comments that have the potential to inflame passions and draw a wedge between the two clubs” There are individuals who do not love football and others who do not wish our country well, and these individuals are making inflammatory statements ahead of such a big game, which is a big worry he said.

According to Mr. Antwi, the police and the security apparatus should not hesitate deal with anyone who will attempt to create problems before, during and after the league encounter this weekend. He wished both sides the very best of luck.

Abdul Karim, the Indian who used to “warm” Queen Victoria’s bed

Prior to this appointment, a 24-year-old Karim was described by Queen Victoria as ‘tall with fine serious countenance’.

Originally a clerk in Agra, he soon became a favourite with Queen Victoria and she promoted him to be her native language teacher, known as a Munshi, teaching her Hindustani.

He was given titles, land and cottages in royal estates. Victoria also had his portrait painted. This attention displeased the royal household, leading to several intrigues.

Karim appeared to have taken advantage of this and on one occasion refused to attend the wedding of the Queen’s granddaughter because he had been allocated a seat in the gallery alongside other servants. Even though he had been hired as a servant, he considered himself to be too superior.

Surprisingly when the Queen’s handlers went to complain about his behaviour, the Queen defended him saying it was so wrong to cause pain to Karim.

At a time when the British empire was at its height, a young Muslim occupied a central position of influence over its sovereign. It was a relationship that sent shockwaves through the royal court and was arguably a relationship far more scandalous than thought

In letters to him over the years between his arrival in the UK and her death in 1901, the queen signed letters to him as ‘your closest friend’.

On some occasions, she even signed off her letters with a flurry of kisses – a highly unusual thing to do at that time.

The two did set tongues wagging by spending a quiet night alone in a highland cottage. (Just the two of them) .

Following Victoria’s death in 1901, his son Edward VII, became the successor. Immediately after ascending to the throne King Edward VII , deported Karim back to India and ordered that all correspondences between him and his mother (Queen Victoria) be destroyed.

Karim subsequently lived quietly near Agra India , on the estate that Victoria had arranged for him, until his death at the age of 46 in 1909.

It appears Victoria had a soft spot for coloured people one entry in Journal show her describing a black man he saw in Germany as a “tall dark and handsome. “
