Akwasi Asante scores late consolation goal against Chelsea in Chesterfield’s heavy defeat in FA Cup

The bulky striker returned from a long injury layoff to score a consolation goal for the lower-tier side at Stamford Bridge on Saturday

Dutch-born striker of Ghanaian descent Akwasi Asante scored a consolation goal for League One side Chesterfield in their 5-1 defeat to Chelsea in the FA Cup at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

After a very slow start to game, Chelsea punished the visitors as Timo Werner scored the opener by the sixth minute.

Calum Hodson-Odoi added another goal by the 18th minute before Romelu Lukaku made it 3-0 two minutes later.

Chelsea went into the break with a 4-0 advantage after Andrea Christensen capitalised on a defensive mixup to slot in from close range.

After the break, Algerian international Hakim Ziyech scored from the spot and Chelsea could’ve added more goals if only they were purposeful upfront.

Substitute Akwasi Asante who came on for Kellermann by the 66th minute, after sitting on the sidelines for six months due to injury concerns, scored a late consolation goal after goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli initially saved a shot and Asante tapped in the rebound.

Asante’s goal has made him the first non-league player to score a goal in the FA Cup against a side in the top two of the Premier League since Rocky Baptiste for Farnborough Town against Arsenal at Highbury in 2003.

The goal sent the 6,000 travelling supporters into ballistic mood amid the defeat as they celebrated having a goal against the champions of Europe and especially at Stamford Bridge.

Kelvin Yeboah joins Serie A side Genoa until 2025

The youngster has joined the Serie A struggling side in a four-year deal after an incredible performance in Austria

Italian-born striker of Ghanaian descent Kelvin Kwarteng Yeboah has joined Serie A side Genoa from Austrian club Sturm Graz on a four-year deal worth €6.5 million, the two clubs have announced.

The 21-year-old sealed the deal on Saturday after passing the club’s medical check up before putting pen to paper.

Yeboah has become the second Ghanaian to play for Genoa this season after striker Caleb Ekuban who has been sold to Konyaspor after a slow start to the season.

Yeboah was a key player for Sturm Graz as he boasts of 14 goals and eight assists in in all competitions.

He is currently the second highest scoring Italian in all leagues with 11 goals in the Austrian Bundesliga.

Yeboah, who is a nephew of former Ghana striker Tony ‘Yegola’ Yeboah, was invited by Ghana for 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers but the youngster turned down the opportunity and instead represented Italy at the Junior level since he insists that he feels more Italian than Ghanaian having stayed in Europe throughout his life.

Not Kudus, Partey or Ayew brothers; C.K Akonnor reveals who will be Ghana’s best player at 2021 Afcon

The former Black Stars coach believes the highly rated youngster will take the Africa Cup of Nations by storm when given the opportunity

Former Ghana coach Charles Kwablah Akonnor has tipped youngster Abdul Fatawu Issahaku to be an instant hit at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations holding in Cameroon.

The 17-year-old has been on top form in Ghana Premier League, scoring five goals and was adjudged the Player of the Month of November.

Fatawu shot to fame last year when he helped the Black Satellites to win 2021 Africa U20 Cup of Nations.

“If you get a chance as a youngster. You should be ready. What he did with the U-20 is graduation,” Akonnor told Happy FM.

“When he came to the Black Stars, I integrated him gradually. He stands a big chance to show his talent if he gets the opportunity and I believe he will be the best among the lot,” he added.

Ghana have arrived in Cameroon after holding a two-week training session in Doha, Qatar. They will play their first game of the tournament against Morocco on Monday before facing Gabon and Comoros.

“My time as Ghana coach was always about struggles,” says C.K Akonnor

The former Black Stars boss has revealed that he had a tough time getting players during international break to honour matches

Former Ghana coach C.K Akonnor has lamented on how difficult it was for him to get players to honour games during his time with the Black Stars.

Akonnor, who was sacked in September barely one year into his reign, believes he could have achieved more than he did with the Black Stars.

“You know my time, it was always a struggle when we were inviting players. All I wish most of the time was for us to get the full squad so if we have the full house then it’s good but my time I didn’t get the team as I wanted.” Akonnor told Happy FM.

Akonnor further stressed that it was wrong for AS Roma youngster Felix Afena-Gyan to turn down an opportunity to play for Ghana at the Afcon.

“It depends on what the boy has in mind and what he wants to achieve. But in all fairness, if you get the chance to play for the national team you need to take it in good faith” he said.

“I don’t think he is looking forward to playing for Italy,” he added.

Akonnor was replaced with Milovan Rajevac and the Serbian coach will be leading Ghana at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations holding in Cameroon next week.

The Black Stars have been handed Group C with North African giants Morocco, Gabon and Comoros.

Dun’s Park ready for Gold Stars vs Hearts of Oak cliffhanger

The management of Gold Stars has done a great job to put the Dun’s Park in good shape ahead of the weekend’s make or break fixture against the Phobians

The Dun’s Park in Bibiani is match ready for today’s Ghana Premier League cliffhanger encounter between Gold Stars and Hearts of Oak.

Ahead of the game, both clubs are coming back from poor showings last weekend as Gold Stars were defeated 2-1 by King Faisal in Kumasi while Hearts shared the spoils goalless against Bechem United who were led by in-form Augustine Okrah at the Accra Sports Stadium.

As a result, both coaches -Michael Osei and Samuel Boadu- would hope to get reactions from their players and win the game to calm down the nerves of their agitated supporters.

The first and last time Hearts travelled to Bibiani ended in a 2-1 defeat for the Phobians in round 64 fixture of the FA Cup on December 23, 2013.

A brace from Bright Agyei, now with Aduana Stars, did the damage for Gold Stars despite a second half consolation goal from Paul Acquah.

Gold Stars lost 1-0 at home to Asante Kotoko and they have sworn heaven and earth not to allow Hearts to inflict another defeat to them in front of their supporters.

The club’s chief executive officer Kwasi Adu has also returned from his visit to Europe after the spending time during the Christmas festivities with his family and has assured the fans of a good result.

The game is expected to kick off at 15h00 GMT and it will be live on Adepa Channel on StarTimes.

“Ghana cannot win 2021 Afcon trophy,” former striker Tony Yeboah reveals why

The former striker claims the Black Stars will come home empty handed despite huge expectations by Ghanaians to end the trophyless run

Former Ghana striker Tony ‘Yegola’ Yeboah has insisted that the Black will fail in their attempt to win 2021 Africa Cup of Nations which will kick off this weekend in Cameroon.

According to Yeboah, the Black Stars lack quality to challenge the likes of Senegal who are coming to the tournament with stars including Liverpool’s Sadio Mane as well as defending champions Algeria who also have Sadio Mane in their ranks.

The Black Stars have been paired with Morocco, Gabon and Comoros in Group C will play their first game on Monday against Morocco.

“It will be difficult for Ghana to win the AFCON but everything is possible in life, so we should pray behind the team. To me, we cannot win the trophy with this team but anything can happen in football,” Yeboah told Onua TV.

“Senegal and other countries have better players this time around and they are performing well in Europe. We’ve had several good players but we were unable to win the title. I believe if we are able to organize things well, anything can happen,” he added.

Ghana last won the Afcon trophy in 1982 and has since made it to the final of the competition on three occasions – 1992, 2010 and 2015 – but they were eliminated from 2019 edition in round of 16 stage by Tunisia.
