“Morocco were lucky to win against Ghana,” Milovan reacts to Black Stars defeat

The Serbian manager believes the Black Stars were unlucky to lose against Morocco in the opening game of Group C

Ghana Coach Milovan Rajevac has insisted that his charges were the better side despite losing 1-0 defeat to Morocco in Group C opening game of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations ongoing in Cameroon.

A late goal by Soufiane Boufal broke the hearts of the Black Stars after both sides looked to be heading to a draw.

“Up till the moment we conceded, we were in full control of the match. We missed many chances and Morocco were a bit luckier in the end to score and win the game,” Milovan said after the game.

A lot of people have raised concerns about Ghana’s lack of early substitutions when Andre Ayew was struggling after a head collision with Saiss and Jordan Ayew failing to create opportunities but Milovan believes his charges were on top of the game and it wasn’t necessary to alter their play.

“Everything was really tight and I felt the team was functioning well, so there was no need to make unnecessary substitutions,” he said.

With Gabon also defeating Comoros 1-0 in the other group game, Ghana are now languishing at the bottom of the Group C table.

They will play Gabon on Friday and must avoid another defeat in order to stand a chance of progressing to the next stage of the competition

A late goal by Soufiane Boufal was enough to break the hearts of the Ghanaians who were hoping to at least savage a point.

Milovan Rajevac started the game with Jojo Wollacot in post, while Andy Yiadom, Baba Rahman, Daniel Amartey and Alexander Djiku completed the defensive setup.

In midfield, Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey and Real Mallorca youngster Baba Iddrisu started while Joseph Paintsil and Kamaldeen Sulemana started on the wings.

Jordan Ayew and skipper Andre Ayew started upfront with the hopes of banging in the goals.

Andre Ayew combined with Joseph Paintsil to set up Jordan Ayew by the eleventh minute but the Crystal Palace striker fluffed the opportunity to the dismay of his coaches.

Paintsil saw his curling effort from long range wonderfully saved by Algerian goalkeeper by the 67th minute. The resulting corner kick was wasted as Ghana continued to press for the opening goal.

Six minutes later, Andre Ayew and Saiss clashed heads following a cross by Partey and that led to serious head injury. Although, the technical team wanted to substitute him, Ayew opted to continue.

Morocco took the lead very late in the game after Boufal capitalised on a Thomas Partey’s mistake to put the Lions ahead with a powerful shot.

Although, Ghana made four late chances by bringing on Fatawu Issahaku, Benjamin Tetteh, Kofi Kyereh and Boakye Yiadom, it was too little too late to snatch an equaliser.

The Black Stars will play Gabon in the next game of the group on Thursday before they square it off with Comoros in the last game of the group on Sunday.

‘Ghana will narrowly defeat Morocco in Group C opening game,” says Asamoah Gyan

The former Ghana skipper believes the Black Stars will defy all odds to beat Morocco in the opening game of Group C

“I’m a Ghanaian and would be happy they win against Morocco. A narrow win is a narrow and I know that they will do the job,” Gyan said on Supersport.

Meanwhile, Gyan further stressed that Andre Ayew is a tournament player and Arsenal star Thomas Partey is the best player in the team now.

He also says Kamaldeen Sulemana is the player to watch out for in the game as he has the qualities to change the outcome at any point in the game.

The Teranga Lions left it late to score the match-winner from the spot through Liverpool star Sadio Mane

Tournament favourites Senegal laboured to defeat Zimbabwe 1-0 in Group B opening game of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations on Monday.

By the 22nd minute, Mane came close to opening the scoring after running into the box from the left, but his low shot was saved by Zimbabwe goalkeeper Petros Mhari.

Zimbabwe had their fair share of the chances after the break but they could not make it count.

After struggling throughout the game to break down the resilient defence of Zimbabwe, Senegal were awarded a last-gasp penalty after the referee adjudged that Kelvin Madzongwe had handled the ball in his box very deep into stoppage-time.

Mane stepped up and blasted home the only goal of the game with the last kick and sent the Senegal supporters who were anxious throughout the game into wild jubilations.

Due to Covid-19 cases, Senegal were only able to name six substitutes.

“Kotoko could’ve scored more goals against Ashanti Gold,” says unsatisfied Prosper Ogum

The Porcupine Warriors boss feels his charges could’ve walloped their rivals in the derby game on Sunday

Asante Kotoko coach Prosper Ogum Narteh has insisted that they could’ve scored more goals despite defeating Ashanti Gold 3-1 in the Ashanti derby at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday.

After a slow start to the game, a second half hat-trick by Cameroonian striker Etuoga Mbella Frank Thierry broke down a resilient defence of Ashanti Gold.

Elijah Addai scored a late consolation goal for Ashanti Gold who have now gone three games without a win.

However, Ogum feels his charges fluffed several other chances which could’ve helped them to achieve a historic scoreline.

“It was good. I think that for the first time at the Baba Yara Stadium, we were able to find our rhythm,” Ogum said after the game.

“We were able to circulate the ball very well, confidently and if you look at the chances that we created we could have scored more. We could’ve won the game by a bigger margin than this.

“I’m happy that for the first time they were very calm on the ball, they were very calm without the ball and were able to exploit the spaces that we created.

Ashanti Gold is a big team which we all know and going up by 3 goals to 1 is fantastic. I’m happy for the boys,” he added.

Kotoko lead the Ghana Premier League log with 26 points, three points above Aduana Stars and they will travel to Golden City Park in Berekum next weekend to face Berekum Chelsea.

“I have unfinished business with Asante Kotoko,” Justice Blay tells fans

The midfielder who was spotted at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday is expected to be unveiled by the Porcupine Warriors in the coming days

“My next destination is Asante Kotoko because I have unfinished business in the team due to the love shown me by the supporters,” Blay told Focus TV.

“I decided not to extend my contract at Medeama and even told all my colleague players that I am leaving that is why there was a guard of honour from my colleagues.

“In football, you have to get a new challenge to make you improve as a player that’s why I am moving on.

“My happiest moment at Kotoko is when I see a lot of supporters at the stadium and cheering the players on. That thing makes me play above myself,” he added.

Blay helped Kotoko to reach the group stage of the Caf Confederation Cup during his first stint with the club and he is expected to be unveiled in the coming days after reportedly signing a two-year deal.

He is expected to boss Kotoko’s midfield with Mudasiru Salifu, Richmond Lamptey and Richard Boadu ‘Agadas’.

Although, some supporters and people who live nearby called on Ghana Fire Service for assistance, their calls could not yield any better result and they had to improvise to put out the fire by fetching water from a nearby tap.

In 2016, a similar incident happened at the training ground when the players were in Takoradi to participate in Ghalca G6 tournament.

Mbella saw his header cleared off the line by Ashanti Gold goalkeeper on 46th minute after the Cameroonian striker had already bolted to jubilate.

However, Mbella was lucky nine minutes later from the spot after Ashanti Gold defender handled the ball in the box.

Kotoko doubled their lead by the 67th minute after scoring from a rebound. Mfegue’s shot was blocked by the Ashanti Gold defenders and Mbella was at the right place to tap home the rebound.

Three minutes later, Mbella completed his hat-trick after beating his marker to connect a pass from his teammate.

With five minutes left to end proceedings, Elijah Addai pulled one back for Ashanti Gold as the Miners hoped to stage a late comeback.

Although, they pushed men forward for another goal, it was too little too late as Kotoko were resolute at the back.
