KP Boateng joins Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin

The midfielder has arrived at his boyhood club after spending almost sixteen years away with several clubs and winning trophies

Ghana midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng has rejoined German Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin until the end of 2021/22 season as a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Serie B club AC Monza, the two clubs have confirmed.

Boateng, 34, is hoping to end his career with Berlin and was unveiled on Wednesday after leaving the club more than a decade ago.

After having stints with Barcelona, AC Milan, Tottenham and Portsmouth, Boateng is expected to help the young lads at Berlin with his enormous experience during his short stay.

“Kevin-Prince Boateng is returning to Berlin, back to his hometown and back to the club for whom he made his Bundesliga debut in 2006. The attacking midfielder joins from Serie B club AC Monza and has signed a contract running until 2022,” a club statement read.

Boateng posted on Twitter: “I’m back.”

He is still available and could be called by Ghana coach C.K Akonnor ahead of the 2020 Africa Cup of Nations holding in Cameroon as the Black Stars hope to win their first major trophy since 1982.

Barekese SHS students join Green Ghana project to plant over 10,000 trees in Atwima Nwabiagya North District

Barekese Senior High School took part in Ghana government’s Green Ghana project as students and teachers teamed up with Atwima Nwabiagya North District Assembly, Atwima Nwabiagya North District Education Office and Forestry Commission to plant over 10,000 trees on Friday.

Following the declaration by president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that June 11 is national tree planting day as government intends to plant five million trees in a day across the country as a way of contributing to the preservation of the environment, the students took part and planted trees on campus with excitement.

Hon. Rebecca Yeboah, the District Chief Executive of the area, after planting her trees urged Ghanaians to do their quota by protecting trees and other natural resources around especially the two dams in the district which provide hundred thousands of people with portable drinking water.

“It is a great moment to join these students and teachers to plant trees in the district and around Barekese dam for a better Ghana. I will like to say that Ghanaians should help in protecting the trees planted today and those already in the system,” Yeboah told AshesGyamera.com.

“Since Atwima Nwabiagya North has two important water bodies – Barekese Dam and Owabi Dam – we need more trees around to protect them because these are the major sources of water for the people of Kumasi and its environs.

“Anyone who will be found cutting down trees or encroaching especially closer to the two dams will be arraigned before court so that the laws of the land deal with them,” she concluded.

The Education Director of the district, Frank Duah Boateng urged students and teachers to help in protecting trees as they are the source of many important things to the country.

“This is a good project and I must commend the president for it. I believe that students and teachers in the district must always come together to sustain our forest since the trees bring about a lot of positives,” he said.

“When students are taught how to care for the trees and environment, they grow to become good and well-meaning citizens who will always have their country at heart. The education office is ready to help in diverse ways,” he added.

The headmaster of Barekese SHS, Mr. Antwi Manu ‘Waben’ promised to see to it that the trees that were planted will be cared for by teachers and students in order to achieve the aim behind the program.

AshesGyamera.com understands that the Suame district of Church of Pentecost has also commenced a project to plant 13,000 trees in Atwima Nwabiagya North district.

SuperSport: Get Ready for UEFA Euro 2020 on GOtv and DSTV

Europe’s biggest football competition for countries kick off on Friday and it will run for the next 30 days with interesting fixtures live on GOtv and DSTV

SuperSport is your #HomeOfFootball and the ultimate destination for lovers of ‘The Beautiful Game’. Let’s take a closer look at the format of the tournament, the top teams and players, as well as some special ‘did you know’ information

Tournament format UEFA Euro 2020 features the same 24-team format as Euro 2016 (with six groups of four teams each, round-robin action, followed by a knockout phase), but instead of being located in one ‘host’ country, the tournament will be spread over 11 cities in 11 different nations: Wembley Stadium in London, England; Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Italy; Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany; Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary; Olympic Stadium in Baku, Azerbaijan; Krestovsky Stadium in Saint Petersburg, Russia; La Cartuja in Seville, Spain; Arena National in Bucharest, Romania; Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam, Netherlands; Hampden Park in Glasgow, Scotland; and Parken Stadium, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Each city will host three group stage matches and one match in the round of 16 or quarterfinals, with the exception of Saint Petersburg, which will host six group stage matches, and London, which will host two matches in the round of 16. Wembley will also host both semifinals (July 6-7) and the final on July 11. The stadiums will operate with limited capacity due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, varying from 20 to 50 percent depending on prevailing circumstances.

Teams to watch:

Portugal are the reigning UEFA Euro champions but do not enter 2020 as one of the clear favourites, given that they were only runners-up in their qualifying group behind Ukraine. Yet with Cristiano Ronaldo leading their attack and Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes as playmaker, A Seleção should certainly not be underestimated.

The bookies’ favourites are England something of a surprise given their poor record at the European Championship, where the Three Lions have only been to one semifinal in the past 50 years.

England, though, have attacking options (such as Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling, Jadon Sancho, Phil Foden and Marcus Rashford) which are the envy of most of the rest of Europe and will have home advantage if they reach the sharp end of the tournament. The reigning World Cup champions, France, are also one of the favourites.

Les Bleus famously won Euro 2000 after claiming the global title two years prior and this generation has an even greater depth of talent for coach Didier Deschamps (who was skipper for their 1998 and 2000 back-to-back triumphs) to call on.

Also keep an eye out for Spain, who are bringing through some outstanding young talent; a Germany team which will be bringing to an end the 15-year tenure of coach Joachim Low; Belgium, who are stacked with top performers such as Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku; and traditional European powerhouses Italy and the Netherlands, with the Azzurri and Oranje hoping to upset the odds this Northern Hemisphere summer.

Players to watch

  1. With 103 goals from 173 Portugal caps, Cristiano Ronaldo enters Euro 2020 as the tournament’s most prolific player. Even at 36, he remains a deadly presence in attack and ended the recent Serie A season with a Golden Boot-winning haul of 29 goals. Marcus Rashford has risen to prominence both on and off the field in the past year, with Euro 2020 representing an opportunity for him to cement a legacy as a generational talent for England.
  2. Turkish attacker Burak Yilmaz may not be a household name just yet, but he comes into the tournament on the back of a brilliant season in France, where he helped Lille knock Paris Saint-Germain off their perch as Ligue 1 champions.
  3. Romelu Lukaku is now arguably the most well-rounded and tactically efficient striker in European football, having brought his game to a new level under Antonio Conte at Internazionale, and Belgium could truly capitalise on their ‘golden generation’ if he continues racking up the goals.
  4. Kylian Mbappe’s heroics at the World Cup helped France claim glory at Russia 2018 – and he’s an even better, more experienced player now! The lightning quick striker is sure to terrorise defences through UEFA Euro 2020.

Did you know?

  1. Euro 2020 will have VAR (video assistant referees) for the first time in its history.

Euro 2020 will be the 16th edition of the European Championships, which were first held in 1960 in France. Germany and Spain are the most successful teams in UEFA Euro history, with three titles apiece. Germany have played the most UEFA Euro matches (49), claimed the most wins (26) and both scored (72) and conceded (48) the most goals in the tournament’s history. Cristiano Ronaldo is set to extend his record as the player with the most matches (21) and minutes (1793) played in UEFA Euro tournaments.

2. Ronaldo has also won the most matches (11 – a record he shares with Spain’s Cesc Fabregas and Andres Iniesta) and is set to become the first man to play in five tournaments (2004, 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020).

3. Spain’s Iker Casillas was a part of five Euro squads (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016) but did not play in the first and last of them.

4. Ronaldo also needs one goal to become the all-time top scorer in UEFA Euro tournaments. He currently shares the record of nine goals with France’s Michel Platini.

Ghana FA orders Eleven Wonders to pay 33,200 cedis to former player Abu Sule

The Bono club’s struggle to avoid relegation has been dealt a big blow as they are to find money to settle their former player

Ghana Football Association’s Player Status Committee has slapped Premier League side Eleven Wonders with 33,000 after wrongfully terminating the contract of former player Abu Sule, AshesGyamera.com can confirm.

Sule joined Wonders in 2019 as a free agent after leaving Heart of Lions and although, he played just a single game for the Techiman-based side, he was unfairly treated as the club verbally terminated his contract and expelled him from the first team.

Sule dragged Wonders to Players’ Status Committee insisting that his signing on fee of 20,000 cedis was not paid after signing his contract as well as 13,200 representing outstanding salaries for 22 months (600 cedis per month).

Sule has further been declared a free agent and can join any club he likes.

Veteran sports journalist Oti Asirifi grateful to Ebenezer Assifuah after visit

The lecturer-turned-journalist was excited to have seen the former Ghana youth star at the hospital he has been receiving treatment on Wednesday

Seasoned sports journalist Joseph Oti-Asirifi, popularly known as Big Oty, has showered praise on former Ghana youth striker Ebenezer Assifuah after he paid a surprise visit to him this week.

Oti, who is the head of disability unit at Takoradi Poly University and former head of sports of Skyy FM, has been battling with health issues recently. He has been admitted to the University Hospital in Takoradi since last week and had one of the surprises of his life as the footballer visited him unannounced.

Assifuah arrived at the hospital with some family members and spent time with the journalist before they parted ways.

“I’ve been battling illness recently only to be admitted at the University hospital. I would like to appreciate the kid gesture of Ebenezer Assifuah and his family,” Oti told AshesGyamera.com.

“They spent some couple of time here and wished me speedy recovery, a gesture that I’m very elated about. I hope to get well soon and rejoin my family and friends,” he added.

Assifuah, who is boasting of one international cap with Ghana, currently plies his trade with FC Pau in France lower league.

Basic schools in Ghana need new teaching & learning approach; Ghanaian teacher in China outlines why

A former teacher at Goaso Roman Catholic Primary School, Martin Tawiah, who is currently working in China as a pre-school teacher, has suggested useful approaches to Ghana Education Service to improve teaching and learning after comparing his stint in Africa to Asia.

Tawiah, who completed Berekum College of Education with Diploma in Basic Education in 2011, worked in the Ahafo regional capital of Goaso until 2014 before he left the shores of the country for greener pastures. He was fully convinced of the myriad of opportunities to enhance his teaching skills.

Now, after seven years of active teaching in China and having first-hand experience of the teaching and learning environment of one of the best countries in Asia, he believes Ghana Education Service needs to introduce methodologies that are of international standards into its teaching environment and do away with the outmoded approach especially in public schools both in towns and villages.

Tawiah with his Chinese students

Speaking exclusively to AshesGyamera.com in an interview from his Chinese base, Tawiah suggested that Ghana Education Service should ensure effective reforms in the teaching and learning skills starting from pre-school education.

By personal observations, he is of the view that Ghanaian pre-school and basic school level teachers do not employ proper approaches in teaching their learners. He explained that, the teachers’ lesson notes preparation are not enough to enhance a good and vibrant learning environment.

Martin Tawiah with his Chinese students

The former Success FM journalist also mentioned that the warm ups, introduction, greetings approach harnessed for lower level learners are inadequately  designed to set the learners in the right mood for teaching and learning.

Tawiah suggested that pre-school teachers should prepare well structured lesson notes which will include sections of entertainment and active warm ups and also further availed himself to assist if the need arises to help with the use of warm up activities and songs.

“GES certainly has a bigger role to play in this with the provision of education related technology like large screen TVs or screens with projectors, with high speed connected Internet and flashcards bbased on the new curriculum adopted recently, ” he said.

“I’ve been teaching these Asian kids both at school and in their homes especially in this COVID-19 era. I’ve come to realise the approach in Ghana is quite different from here so if they need my advice and experience, I’m always available to help. This is because no matter where I go, I will return home one day so I have to help shape home.”

He concluded that: “teachers are taught the right things in colleges, as I’m a beneficiary of such rich knowledge in teaching, but they simply refuse to use what they were trained to do the right way when they are posted to education centers.

“It’s not too late to arrest this situation. GES can provide proper TLM’S for teachers to use because they are already trained and know how to use these TLMs.”

“All five senses of touch, sight, smell, hearing, taste are essential for effective teaching and learning, especially for all kinds of children” he stressed.

Asunafo District football chairman and a female referee involved in accident

Ahead of the opening games of the juvenile league in the Ahafo region, an unfortunate incident took place on Thursday and nearly took the lives of two ‘football people’

Asunafo North and South district football chairman Collins Yaw Jnr (King CY) and class one female referee Vida Yenube were involved in an accident on Thursday evening, AshesGyamera.com can confirm.

The duo were returning to Ahafo regional capital Goaso from a nearby village called Fawohoyɛdɛ after dropping off some referees who came to participate in the final training sessions ahead of the start of the District Juvenile League over this weekend.

Their car failed its brake when it was applied leading to the unfortunate incident.

“We had final preparations ahead of the weekend’s schedules so that we will not have any hitches. I decided to drop off some of the referees and on our way back to the regional capital, we were involved in an accident,” Collins told AshesGyamera.com.

“Fortunately for us, there was no death recorded but we picked up some injuries and have been to the Goaso Municipal hospital for treatments. Vida is a class one referee and officiates in the Women’s Premier League.

“My only worry now is the vehicle I was using since it is not a personal one but a company’s official car (Genesis Radio). However, once there is life, there is hope so I will deal with that with my bosses and then do my best for the juvenile league to also start because other districts began theirs last weekend,” he added.

Kwame Opoku scores on USM Alger debut in derby victory over MC Alger

The budding talent repaid his new club’s technical team with a goal when he was handed his maiden appearance in a derby on Saturday

Former Asante Kotoko striker Kwame Opoku was on target when USM Alger defeated MC Alger 2-0 in Algerian Coupe de Ligue on Saturday.

Opoku, who was making his bow for the North African side on his 22nd birthday, connected a pass from his teammate and calmly raced on to slot it home for the opener by the 19th minute.

Although, MC Alger doubled their efforts in search of the equaliser before the break, Opoku’s effort stood as the only difference in the first half.

Former Dreams FC striker Joseph Esso also came close to find the equaliser for visitors MC Alger after the break but his shot was blocked.

Deep in additional time, new arrival Zakaria Naïdji added the icing to the cake after he stretched to connect a cross and put the game to bed for USM Alger.

Opoku joined USM Alger in a four-and-a-half year deal in March and was close to making his debut in midweek against E.S Setif in the league.

Kwame Opoku’s USM Alger debut delayed; could mark it against Esso’s Alger

The striker couldn’t make his bow as expected on Tuesday’s night but he may be fortunate during the cup game this weekend

Former Asante Kotoko striker Kwame Opoku couldn’t make his debut with USM Alger in Algeria when they shared the  spoils 1-1 with E.S Setif in Algerian Ligue 1 last night.

Opoku, who before the game expressed his excitement after being named in the matchday squad, was an unused substitute.

Alger took the lead in the game by the 56th minute mark through 23-year-old midfielder Billel Benhamouda but a late penalty from Houssam Ghacha saved Setif’s blushes with only five minutes remaining.

Opoku could make his bow this weekend when USM Alger host MC Alger in a local derby derby in Coup De La Ligue (Algerian version of FA Cup) on Saturday.

Former Hearts of Oak and Dreams FC forward Joseph Esso will also likely make his debut for MC Alger in that game.
