Manchester United appoint Solskjaer as manager until end of the season

The Norwegian coach has been installed as the club’s new temporary boss following Jose Mourinho’s sacking

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been appointed as Manchester United’s interim manager for the rest of the season.

The former Red Devils striker, who played at Old Trafford for over a decade between 1996 and 2007, takes over on a temporary basis in the wake of Jose Mourinho’s exit on Tuesday.

A United statement read: “Manchester United announced today that former striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been appointed as caretaker manager until the end of the 2018-19 season.

“Solskjaer will take charge of the first team with immediate effect and will remain in place while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new full-time manager.”

He arrives from Norwegian side Molde, having returned to the club for a second stint back in 2015. Mike Phelan has also returned to United in the role of first-team coach and will work alongside the club’s former midfielder Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna.

Solskjaer, whose appointment had been accidentally revealed late on Tuesday, told United’s official website : “Manchester United is in my heart and it’s brilliant to be coming back in this role. I’m really looking forward to working with the very talented squad we have, the staff and everyone at the club.”

United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward added: “Ole is a club legend with huge experience, both on the pitch and in coaching roles. His history at Manchester United means he lives and breathes the culture here and everyone at the club is delighted to have him and Mike Phelan back. We are confident they will unite the players and the fans as we head into the second half of the season.”

A forward perhaps best known as a “super sub” for United, Solskjaer famously came off the bench against Bayern Munich in the 1999 Champions League final to score an injury-time winner and hand Sir Alex Ferguson’s side their first European honour for over 30 years.

He also picked up six Premier League titles and two FA Cups, among other honours, during his time as a player at the club.

At international level, he won 67 caps for Norway and was a member of their 1998 World Cup and 2000 European Championship squads, reaching the last 16 in the former.

Following his retirement, Solskjaer transitioned from the United playing squad to the managerial set-up, where he took charge of the reserves at Carrington under Ferguson between 2008 and 2011.

He left the club to take the reins at Molde, where he had played before switching to United, and won the Tippeligaen league title in his first season in charge, in 2011.

He was coaxed back to the United Kingdom in early 2014 to replace Malky Mackay as manager of relegation-threatened Cardiff City but was unable to prevent the club from making the drop back into the Championship.

A subsequent dismissal followed after a run of poor results to open the 2014-15 campaign and Solskjaer was reappointed Molde boss the following October on a three-and-a-half year deal.

We’ve done nothing wrong to Asante Kotoko, Kariobangi Sharks deny allegations

Kariobangi Sharks have denied allegations levelled against them by Asante Kotoko ahead the Caf Confederation Cup fixture at the Kasarani Stadium on Saturday in Nairobi.

The Porcupine Warriors caused an uproar on Wednesday after touching down as they rejected a bus given them by the hosts, insisting that it was too small to accommodate their contingent.

They later complained about a substandard training pitch they were made to train on but the Kenyan club has insisted they are not at fault since Kotoko even failed to share their traveling plans with them.

“It’s disturbing to note that our opponents have resorted to creating a false illusion of mistreatment. We would like to clarify that we’ve done our best as per CAF regulations and shall continue to do so,” a club statement read.

“Furthermore, it’s important that the public knows that our opponents refused to share their schedule & travel plans with us & on arrival they started making unrealistic demands that fall outside the CAF regulations. Such is not good practice.

“Our opponents should stop hiding behind such rumours in order to justify any unethical practices they may be planning when we visit them in Kumasi, for the second leg. If they feel we have breached any of Caf’s regulations, they should go ahead a make a formal complaint at Caf, ” the statement added.

The return fixture has been scheduled for December 22 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

Ghana not ready to host 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, says Tagoe

Former Hearts of Oak midfielder Joe Tagoe believes Ghana is not ready to host the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations amid calls by a section of Ghanaians to table an official bid.

Original host Cameroon was stripped of the right due to poor preparations, with Caf calling on interested countries to submit applications within 21 days.

The successful candidate is expected to be announced before December 31. The tournament will hold from June 15 through July 13 next year.

“Ghana don’t have what it takes to host the 2019 Afcon so I don’t think we should officially send our bid to Caf,” Tagoe told Goal.

“Since June, football hasn’t been like we used to experience in this country because of the corrupt practices of some officials which were captured on cameras. As a result, the interest is down and that needs a lot of work to get people attracted to the sport again.

“Local leagues have been suspended and players are struggling to have ends meet.

Although, we have five standard stadiums and two were used to host the African Women championship, I believe we are not ready for this opportunity. The attention should be directed towards how best we can solve the internal problems rather than hosting another continental tournament.

“There are other countries that are in good position to stage the Afcon than Ghana so we should concentrate on our problems and make sure that we don’t worsen our situation, ” he added.

Ghana sit second in Group F of the qualifiers and will host Kenya in the last game in March next year.

Goal understand that Morocco is leading the race to replace Cameroon as new host.

The Porcupine Warriors chief is optimistic that they will end their run without a continental silverware this season as they participate in the Caf inter-club competition

Asante Kotoko communications director Sarfo Duku Esq has insisted that they have the men to win the 2018-19 Caf Confederation Cup trophy, amid concerns raised about their preparedness.

In their last three participations in the competition, they have been knocked out in the first round by relatively smaller clubs but Sarfo is optimistic that they will change the narratives by annexing the title under new coach C.K Akonnor.

“I can now confirm that 26 players which is made up of 11 new signings and 15 old players have been sent to Caf and they will be defending the club to win the [Caf Confederation Cup] trophy,” he told Abusua FM.

“Of course, whenever you participate in any competition, your target should be the ultimate [so we’re going to win it and not just to participate],” he added.
