Ghanaian delegate & 16 other nationals ‘missing’ after Commonwealth Games

Police have revealed competitors and delegates from Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Cameroon, Ghana and Botswana went AWOL

A total of 17 athletes and delegates have been reported missing since the start of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, police have revealed. The number included 13 competitors and four others who were part of the individual teams.

Nine of the 17 missing people have been found while eight remain unaccounted for. Of the missing eight, two are said to be Pakistani boxers aged 22 and 25, named in media reports as Suleman Baloch and Nazeer Ullah Khan, according to BirminghamMail.

Five others are from the Sri Lankan squad and one is a delegate from Ghana. Police said a dozen members of the Sri Lankan team went missing, of which seven have now been found.

A competitor from Botswana and an athlete from Cameroon also went missing but both have also been found. Police are working with immigration officials to ensure the welfare and safety of all those who have been located.

A force spokesperson, said: “We’ve received a total of 17 missing people reports from visiting Commonwealth Games delegations – 13 competitors and four other delegation members. Of those, nine have since been found and eight remain outstanding.

“We’re making enquiries alongside immigration officials to ensure they are safe and well.”

Previously, Sri Lankan team spokesperson Gobinath Sivarajah said some of the missing athletes also serve in the country’s armed forces. They include a male judo manager, a female judo athlete, two male wrestlers, three boxers, two male beach volleyball players and a female wrestler.

The Sri Lankan contingent consisted of 161 athletes, including 51 officials, who were granted 180-day visas by the government. The remaining team returned home on Wednesday (August 10).

Ghanaian boxer Joseph Commey has been ruled out of the final of Featherweight division at 2022 Commonwealth Games ongoing in Birmingham on Sunday.

The youngster made it to the final stage and was hoping to win gold after defeating Indian boxer Mohamed Hussan Uddin at the National Exhibition Centre on Saturday.

However, his hopes have been dashed as he has been ruled out of the final bout due to sickness. After several medical check ups, doctors insisted that Commey isn’t medically fit to fight and will as a matter of urgency have to settle for silver medal.

Ghana’s contingent have picked one silver and two bronze medals so far in the competition. Abraham Mensah will fight in the evening for a gold medal.

Ghanaian boxer Joseph Commey has made it to the final of Featherweight division at 2022 Commonwealth Games ongoing in Birmingham UK after defeating Mohamed Hussan Uddin at the National Exhibition Centre on Saturday.

This was the bout almost all the Ghanaian contingent in Birmingham were afraid of ahead of kick off as the Indian was one of the best rated boxers to win Gold in the division.

However, Commey narrowly defeated him through a split decision to make it to the final and challenge for either gold or silver at this juncture.

Mensah secures another medal in Boxing for Ghana at 2022 Commonwealth Games

The 18-year-old outmatched his opponent in the last eight and has now secure the country’s third medal at the Commonwealth Games

Ghanaian Bantamweight boxer Abraham Mensah defeated Rukmal Prasanna from Sri Lanka in the quarterfinals bout of 2022 Commonwealth Games to secure a place in the semifinals.

Mensah won both the first and second rounds after perfectly landing a lot of punches on the face of his opponent.

Although, Mensah was deducted a point on the third round, he held on to pick a win as the judges ruled in his favour.

Mensah has now joined Omar Wahib and Joseph Commey as the three Ghanaians to have automatically won a medal for Ghana in the competition.

Abigail Kwarteng reaches final of High jump at 2022 Commonwealth Games

The 25-year-old made it to the last stage of the competition and she is now on the verge of annexing a medal for the country

Ghanaian athlete Abigail Kwarteng has made qualified to the final of Women’s High jump at the 2022 Commonwealth Games ongoing in Birmingham, UK on Thursday.

The 25-year-old made it to the final after clearing a height of 1.81 and will now compete for a medal.

Four months ago, Kwarteng made history when he set a new national record by 5cms when she scaled to a new personal best height of 1.92m to pick a gold medal at the War Eagle Invitational in Auburn, Alabama on Saturday April 16, 2022.

Few days ago, Kwarteng granted an interview to GHone TV and slammed the leadership of sports in Ghana, insisting that nobody should expect medals from athletes they have not invested in enroute to the tournament.

“You don’t expect from where you don’t invest. If everything was good and I was able to continue how wouldn’t my training be good,” she said.

“If I had enough time to rest and enough time to be in practice I could easily stand and tell you that I’m very confident that things are going to be great. However, I have to work 12 hours a day and spend just about 3 to 4 hours practicing.”

“I’m going to go out there and do my best. My coach is really trying and that is why I say I can see what is going to happen. It is not even just with me but I think Ghanaians shouldn’t expect much from anybody you didn’t invest in, however, we are going to go out there and do whatever we could because we love the sport and that is what we are here for and give our 100 per cent. And, the prayer is that our 100 per cent is enough,” she concluded.

The highly-rated boxer made it look easy as he brushed aside his tough opponent to annex Ghana’s first medal at the games ongoing in Birmingham

Ghanaian Featherweight boxer Joseph Commey defeated New Zealand’s Alex Mukuka to make it to the semifinals and automatically win the country’s first medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games ongoing at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.

Commey, who began his journey at the Games by defeating Allan Oiake of Papua New Guinea in the preliminary round, was the favorite to progress right from the start as he dominated proceedings.

It was not surprising that the Accra-based boxer won the bout unanimously as all the judges ruled it in his favour.

According to the rules and regulations governing boxing at the Commonwealth Games, once a boxer reaches the last four, he or she automatically wins a bronze medal.

However, Commey could win a silver or gold medal if he wins his next bout scheduled for Friday.

Ghana boxer Joseph Commey defeated Alex Mukuka to progress to the semifinals and automatically win the country’s first medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games ongoing at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.

Commey bosses the bout throughout and did not give his opponent any chance to come into the contest.

In Round Two of three, the Ghanaian almost knocked Mukuka out but his opponent was bent on finishing the bout.

Commey began his journey by defeating Allan Oiake of Papua New Guinea in the preliminary round.

In boxing, every boxer that reaches the last four automatically wins bronze medal and could further win a silver or gold if he wins the subsequent bouts.

Abrefa wins as Cynthia Kwabi loses in Table Tennis opener at 2022 Commonwealth Games

The duo had contrasting start at the Commonwealth Games as they hoe to win the country its first medal

Ghanaian Men’s Table Tennis star Derek Abrefa defeated Moosa Munsif Ahmed from Maldives 4-0 on Wednesday morning at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.

Despite initial controversies surrounding Abrefa’s illegibility to play in the game, the Ghanaian shrugged off the setback and then jumped into the arena to win the day.

He won the first three sets and only needed another victory to settle the game and prevent it from advancing into another round where all the seven sets had to be completed.

Abrefa will face Rifat Sabbir from Bangladesh in the afternoon of Wednesday at the same venue.

Meanwhile, Cynthia Kwabi lost 4-0 to Karen Lyne from Malaysia in the Women’s singles. However, she has promised to bounce back in the subsequent games and qualify to the next stage.

The sprinter made it look easy as he claimed top spot in the 100 meters heat

Ghana’s 100 metres runner Benjamin Azamati has just won the Men’s 100m heat 7 at the 2022 Commonwealth Games ongoing at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old clocked 10.19 and now heads to the next stage.

Despite his wonderful start, Azamati will have to shrug off competitions from the likes of Kenyans’ Ferdinand Omanyala and others in order to grab a medal in the event.

The youngster narrowly lost his bout which could have seen him drawing nearer to the medal zone but insists his colleagues will make amends

Ghanaian Flyweight boxer Samuel Yaw Addo has expressed his disappointment after narrowly losing the round of 16 bout to in the ongoing Commonwealth Games at Birmingham, UK.

The 22-year-old was one of the highly-rated boxers to win a medal at the Games for Team Ghana but errors and points deductions ended his dream.

“I have lost but I think it’s all because I was fighting on a foreign land. The referee deducted some points from my accumulated ones which were unnecessary,” a dissatisfied Addo told AshesGyamera.com’s editor Evans Gyamera-Antwi in Birmingham, UK.

Amid his disappointment, Addo is optimistic that his colleagues will make him and the country proud.

“Despite my defeat and inability to progress to the medal zone, I believe Team Ghana can win at least four medals.

“Abdul Omar Wahib, Joshua Commey and the others have the potentials to win medals and they will do that especially in boxing. Ghanaians should pray for them,” he added.

Joseph Commey, Abraham Mensah and Abdul Omar Wahib have reached the quarterfinals stage in Boxing at 2022 Commonwealth Games on Featherweight, Bantamweight and Light Welterweight division respectively.

The trio will be in action again on Wednesday for a place in the semifinals which will guarantee them a medal.
