CAF approves Accra Sports Stadium for Ghana vs Sudan

CAF bans Ghana from using Baba Yara Stadium

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has withdrawn its approval for the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, Ghana, due to technical infractions, including an unsuitable playing field.

The decision was made after observations made by CAF during the recent Africa Cup of Nations Qualifying match between Ghana and Angola, which was played at the Baba Yara Stadium on September 5th, 2024. Based on these observations, it was determined that the stadium did not meet the required standards for hosting Category 3 international matches.

The CAF team identified several issues, including a playing field that was deemed unsuitable for competitive matches. The stadium’s playing field had deteriorated significantly, with uneven surfaces, poor drainage, and inadequate grass cover.

The Baba Yara Stadium, which has a seating capacity of over 40,000, has hosted several high-profile matches in the past, including World Cup qualifiers and AFCON matches.

CAF officials expressed dissatisfaction with the state of the stadium, citing the need for Ghanaian authorities to invest in upgrading the facility to meet international standards.

A letter from CAF noted earlier concerns expressed by the continental body about the state of the playing field.
“It is important to note that, prior to the match, CAF had expressed concerns about the suitability of Baba Yara Sports Stadium for hosting top-tier international fixtures. Persistent issues at this venue, as well as others in Ghana, such as Cape Coast Stadium and Accra Sports Stadium, have also been noted.”
Given the absence of any other CAF-approved Category 3 stadiums in Ghana, CAF has requested the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to select an alternative venue from among those approved by CAF outside Ghana for Matchday 3 and 4 of the Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 qualifiers.

The letter from CAF also recommended that the relevant authorities “conduct a comprehensive assessment of all major international stadiums in Ghana to ensure they comply with CAF technical standards.” Additionally, CAF advised that the stadium management engage experienced companies immediately to undertake the necessary refurbishment to meet CAF/FIFA standards.
CAF expressed its commitment to supporting Ghana (through the GFA) in bringing its stadiums up to the required standards for hosting CAF/FIFA senior international matches, offering to assist by providing an international pitch consultant with experience in major international competitions, including AFCON, to offer additional expert guidance on the necessary improvements. The cost of this support would be borne by the GFA.
CAF went on to indicate that once the needed renovation works were completed, it would, at the GFA’s request and expense, conduct an independent inspection to reassess the stadium’s suitability for future matches.
The withdrawal of approval means that Ghana will have to find alternative venues for upcoming international matches, including the AFCON qualifiers. The Ghana Football Association has promised to work with Government to address the issues and restore the stadium to its former status.

Jerome Opoku ruled out of Black Stars game against Niger

Ghana defender Jerome Opoku has been ruled out of the game against Niger in Morocco on Monday following an injury he picked up ahead of the 1-0 defeat to Angola in Kumasi on Thursday.

The defender reported a muscle injury to the medical team of the Black Stars and it is believed that the injury was caused by the terrible pitch at the Baba Yara Stadium.

Opoku is expected to depart to Europe for further assessment before the restart of the Turkish Super Lig next weekend.

“Turkey based defender Jerome Opoku has been ruled out of the Black Stars’ upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Niger due to injury,” a Ghana FA statement read.

“The player reported to the medical team a deep seated pain within his left gluteal muscles and further examination confirmed that the pain got aggravated by the poor pitch on which he trained in Kumasi.

“Jerome will therefore travel to Turkey to receive injections under ultrasound guidance following discussions with his club as he races against time to be fully fit for their next assignment in the Turkish Super Lig.

“This leaves Otto Addo with 22 players ahead of the game against Niger on Monday. Jerome Opoku was an unused substitute in last Thursday’s game against Angola at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi,” the statement concluded.

In the other group game, Angola will host Sudan in the top of the table clash as both countries have three points each.

Ghana lack good defenders and goalkeepers -Angola coach

Angola coach Pedro Goncalves has suggested that Ghana lack good goalkeepers and defenders ahead of the first game in Group F of 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers at Baba Yara Stadium on Thursday.

According to Goncalves, the Black Stars have quality players and balance in midfield led by Arsenal superstar Thomas Teye Partey and West Ham United forward Kudus Mohammed but there are still areas where his charges can exploit.

The Black Stars have conceded ten goals in their last five games, an average of two goals per game.

“Black Stars have players from top level in the world, but the big names are [only] in the midfield and forward,” Goncalves said at the press conference ahead of the game.

“Mohammed Kudus is one of the best players at the moment for Africa. [There are also] Jordan Ayew, Thomas Partey the legend, Inaki Williams.

“I mentioned four players but I can say more. It’s a balanced team at the high level but for sure the big names are in the attack,” he added.

Crystal Palace striker Jordan Ayew arrived late in camp on Wednesday afternoon together with midfielder Elisha Owusu and the duo are expected to start the game from the bench.

Sudan led by former Ghana captain and coach Kwesi Appiah are leading the group with three points after narrowly defeating Niger 1-0 on Wednesday thanks to a goal by Abo Eisa.
