Prince Tagoe wants ‘cheap’ fame, says Asamoah Gyan

Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has reacted angrily to comments made by Prince Tagoe about the Black Stars captaincy insisting that the former striker wants to ride on his name for fame.

Tagoe who played alongside Gyan in the Black Stars on numerous occasions, believes coach Kwesi Appiah made a huge mistake to pick Gyan ahead of Sulley Muntari and Michael Essien in 2012 since the duo were the seniors in the team at that time.

“What I can say is that everybody have his or her opinion. Even when a president is elected, someone will still argue that he doesn’t deserve to be the President,” Gyan told Hot FM.

“Others will also oppose to that comment and say he deserved it. Prince Tagoe is also saying his mind but I was expecting him to say it when he was in camp with us. We played together so he had the best of opportunities to express his grievances.”

“When people want to become famous ,they often try to use my name. The captain was given to me six years ago so why now? These people are only tarnishing my image because they know they can get the fame they are craving for after this.

“I worked really hard to earn the fame that I’m enjoying. Prince Tagoe and Nana Aba Anamoah are only using my name for fame,” he added.

Gyan is Ghana’s all-time topscorer with 51 goals and has admitted he will hang his boots after the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations holding in Cameroon.

Boxing: Tagoe-Saucedo showdown in Accra

Come January 27, Ghana will witness yet another engrossed bout involving unsung hero-the ‘Game Boy’-Emmanuel Tagoe and Argentine journeyman-David Fernando Saucedo-(70-61-10Kos-6 losses,3 draws) in their much anticipated Super Lightweight battle at the Bukom Boxing Arena which is fast becoming the ‘Mecca of Ghana boxing ‘kind courtesy Baby Jet promotions.

This fight has been on the wish list of the Ghanaian who somewhat has proven to be the best in the country now and by extension, registered his emotions being the most richest boxer in Ghana.

When Tagoe’s nemesis –Fernando Saucedo pulled out of their initial meeting, it greatly affected the Ghanaian’s plans and he believed the Argentine was running away from him.

It has always been on the checklist of the stylish Ghanaian pugilist to pursue a shot at the biggest pinnacle of the four main divisions-and Saucedo would not be a stumbling block.

Many Ghanaians have doubted the ring potentials of Tagoe but truth is bitter. After perusing through his testimonials, Emmanuel Tagoe is undoubtedly the only existing World Champion in Ghana and perhaps an unsung hero in recent times.

We have so soon forgotten that the ‘Game Boy’ actually effected the leeway for upcoming boxers like Dogbe, Micah and Commey to follow.

It is well established by boxingghana.com beyond all skepticisms that the tough talking boxer is indeed the only Champion the country can boast of as at now.

But this fight will perhaps shut down the pessimistic philosophy surrounding his reign as the only World Champion that the country currently has when he cruises to victory on Saturday night. No questions about that.

ANALYSIS:

Fernando saucedo in all fairness will not be counted as one of Argentines finest boxers, notwithstanding his long lists of fights he has gone through.

The history of Argentina’s great ring engagers includes the likes of Sergio Martinez, Justo Suarez,Oscar Bonavena and in recent times Carlos Monzon.

Sergio Martinez fought Miguel Cotto-a hall of famer.Oscar Bonavena was yet another heavyweight legend in Argentina in the 70s.He had a naughty grumble with the then intrepid ring Heavyweight of the world, Joe Frazier ,knocking him twice to the canvas but eventually losing on a split decision. Oscar again lost to legendary Muhammad Ali in 15rounds

Middleweightchampion- Sergio Martinez is heartly recognized by his single-shot demolishing of Paul Williams in their 2010 engagement and is touted as one of the most iconic knockouts in recent years.

Carlos held the world middleweight title for 7 years in the 70s.Hewas a methodical ring general and brutalized opponents and no wonder he has become a major celebrity in South America.

Saucedo lost to Nedal Hussein from Australia(48,43wins,27kos 5 losses )an opponent who had tasted the wrath of Pacquio for the International Superbamtamweight title in 2000 and was Koed. The Saucedo- Nedal fight in May,2004, had the vacant WBO Asia Pacific Super Featherweight Title on the line in which Saucedo was disqualified.

Infact Saucedo fought credible opponents like, Claudio RosendoTapia, Acelion Freitas and Chris John. He lost to John a by UD in 2010 in Jakarta His last loss was against Rances Barthelemy- in 2004 in an IBF Super Featherweight defensefor the latter.

In fact, the credibility of Chris John-the dragon-(52-48-22kos-1 loss-3 draws-)a former Indonesian champion is worth mentioning because the rugged Indonesian had fought Juan Manuel Marquez before in which he won over 12 rounds.

Saucedo fought Rances Barthelemy(27-26-13kos-0-0)who defeated Argenis Mendez on January,3 2014 and lost. He was again defeated in a rematch.

SAUCEDO

The aging Argentine has a -lower KO percentage notwithstanding his long role call in the ring. It is a difficult assignment for Saucedo anytime he steps up to world class fights; a typical example was when he fought Freitas and Chris John. He was completely shut out on the cards.

He is a very experienced fighter with craft and very good at staying on the outside and countering his opponents with improvised aggression. He throws fluid combinations attacking the body and shifting quickly upstairs.

He paws with a jab and leaves himself very open for the counter right hand but lacks punching power.

Very comfortable from the outside and this is a sure recipe for disaster against Tagoe who is very cunning with his infrequent sweeping counters. Saucedo will surely apply the principle of staying in the face of Tagoe and throw tones of punches to confuse the Ghanaian.

But this will be comical for the ”Game Boy”who the least respects a boxer who has fought over 70 times with only 10 Kos.

TAGOE:

The Ghanaian has cropped up in some unthinkable confidence of late and that is the hidden key to his inevitable victory on Saturday.

The “richest boxer in Ghana” as he touts himself, needs to scribble his flaws and seek for earlier corrections ahead of the fight.

He has on a couple of occasions exhibited some hilarity in the ring which must be eschewed. Nonetheless, I feel he has fought some credible boxers in this likes of Lantey Addy, Malik Jabir,George Ashie, and Allan Kamote.

In fact his capturing of the IBO Belt recently when he hospitalized Mzonke Fana was a pleasure to observe. Tagoe showed explicit ring craft to dominate the South African.

One fight I love so much was that against American Geraldo Robbles. It was a complete litmus test for the Ghanaian. And he shone. My happiness for Tagoe in that fight is premised on the rich record of the American who had earlier fought names like Brandon Rios,Manny Pacquio and Timothy Bradley.

Again against Carlo Magali, Tagoe proved his worth as a big name in the annals of Ghana Boxing. Incredible! Tagoe brushed off the bluff of Carlo who had a fresh CV in knocking out Japanese contender – Masatoshi Kotani.

The Ghanaian boxer has had to eradicate on his way to glory three Filipinos who had been a huge impedimentia is on his path.

He engaged Jobert Delos Reyes, Ronald Pontillas, Carlo Magali—the third Filipino victim.

Admittedly, Tagoe had a nightmarish performance against the stubborn Pontillas at the Bukom Emporium forcing a heartbeat majority decision of 115-115,116-112,118-111 from the three judges : Shadrack Acquaye,Adon Berthin of Benin and Frederick Ghartey of Ghana. The Ghanaian visited the canvass on two occasions- 4th and 9th rounds.

PREDICTION:

Tagoe has come of age and all the cards are sloping in his favour. His handwork has improved. His backroom staff are relentless in his progress. The fans are reckoning to see him gel in the ring. He needs to stamp his authority as the best in the country. He’s got it.

The Bukom Boxing Arena has also become a lions den for many visitors but most of all I think ‘Game Boy’ has matured over the years enough to win on the day. No two ways about that.

Statistically, Saucedo might have fought many boxers but only a few are credible. He has had little taste outside his native country as well.

Boxingghana believes it is a perfect pick for the Ghanaian. A good challenger but not dangerous.
Length and power, speed and skill will be far too much for the light-hitting Saucedo. I don’t think this fight will see the round of 6. I see no reason why Tagoe shouldn’t be able to defend this title on a icy note. His fistic ambition is on the line. It’s a done deal. Game Boy wins.

Hearts 1-2 Dreams FC: Leonard’s penalty wins G8 title for Believers

Dreams FC pipped ten-man Hearts of Oak 2-1 to win 2018 Ghalca G8 tournament at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Two goals from Razak Cromwell and captain Leonard Owusu Agyeman after going down to Daniel Kordie’s opener, gave Dreams their first-ever major silverware and meant that Hearts and their manager Frank Elliott Nuttal have lost two finals within three months.

Hearts made a single change in their starting XI that defeated Asante Kotoko in the semifinals as Patrick Razak came in for Reginald Thompson while Dreams kept faith in their setup with Eric Gawu leading the attack against his former side.

Dreams had the first opportunity by the first minute after Gawu went past his marker and sent a low drive across the face of goal but couldn’t find a teammate for a tap in. Razak forced a save from Dreams goalkeeper Isaac Amoako on the other side.

However, Kordie opened the scoring for Hearts by the 11th minute. The youngster connected a pass and sent a powerful shot past goalkeeper Isaac Amoako from 25 yards out.

Dreams regrouped and Cromwell equalised for them seven minutes later after Gawu’s pass located him. Sharani Zuberu could have sent Dreams in front for the time in the game by the 42nd minute but he failed to guide his effort past goalkeeper Ben Mensah before Gawu also shot wide.

Kordie combined with Cosmos Dauda by 47th minute but the former’s last ditch effort was blocked by Patrick Arthur.

Dreams finally took the lead by 62nd minute after Gawu was brought down in the box. Leonard sent goalkeeper Mensah to the wrong side and silence the traveling supporters of Hearts at the stadium.

With seven minutes remaining, Hearts were left with ten men after Inusah Musah picked his second yellow of the day following a rush tackle.

Nuttall charged his men to move forward in search of the equaliser but they couldn’t find a breach in Dreams’ resilient defence just like it happened against Asante Kotoko in the FA Cup in October.

Although, the song is made of six words —Shatta, Wale, Freedom, My, name, is — and received public backlash from a section of Ghanaians,  it has been the tune many use to dance at parties and other places of interest.

Stonebwoy’s ‘I’m a hero‘ came third and Dem Confuse by Shatta ended up in second place as the best dancehall tunes in Ghana currently.

Shatta Wale is expected to be nominated this time around by Charter House for 2017 Ghana Music Awards after being banned since 2015.

Atuahene & Twumasi selected by FC Dallas; Opoku joins Columbus Crew

Careers of three young Ghanaian soccer players were given a major boost during the 2018 Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft held in Philadelphia on Friday.

Members of the 2018 Generation adidas, Francis Atuahene and Emmanuel Twumasi were selected by FC Dallas for their first ever professional contracts.

Atuahene of Michigan University was picked 4th overall while Wake Forest’s Twumasi was the 11th overall pick by Dallas.

Dallas traded $200,000 of General Allocation Money to the Montreal Impact for Atuahene (4th overall pick) and latter settled on Twumasi (11th overall pick) as their second pick.

Atuahene, 21, played three seasons at the University of Michigan. The forward scored 24 goals and had 11 assists in 49 matches for the Wolverines from 2015 to 2017.

The 20-year-old Twumasi scored 16 goals and had 11 assists in two seasons (47 games) at Wake Forest University.

Francis Atuahene and Emmanuel Twumasi

Atuahene and Twumasi who are both Generation adidas players from the Right to Dream Academy in Ghana were full of praise to all those who contributed to their success stories.

“Where I come from in Ghana, not everyone has an opportunity. Back in my village, there were kids that were even better than me that did not get this opportunity,” Atuahene said.

“For me, part of being a professional player, part of having an education is making a difference in other people’s lives. That is what I plan on doing. There is a lot talent in the world but people just don’t have the opportunity. I want to give opportunities to people. Being in Dallas, I will be able to help do that while also focusing on giving my best on the field”, elated Atuahene noted.

In a related development, Columbus Crew SC’s insatiable love for Ghanaian players was on display again as they settled on another young Ghanaian talent in the second round of the draft.

Edward Opoku joins Columbus Crew

University of Virginia forward Edward Opoku, also a member of the 2018 Generation adidas class, caught the eyes of the handlers of the Crew with the ninth pick in the Second Round (32nd overall).

Just like Atuahene and Twumasi, opoku, 21, was born in Konongo, Odumasi in the Ashanti region of Ghana and came to the US through the Right to Dream Academy.

He attended the University of Virginia from 2015-2017, making 53 appearances (all starts) while registering 16 goals and nine assists. Opoku was named to the USC Second Team All-American in 2016 and 2017, as well as to the USC First Team All-South Region in 2016. Prior to attending the University of Virginia, went to high school at Millbrook School and was named the MVP of the 2014 High School All-American Game.

The third and fourth rounds of the 2018 MLS SuperDraft will be held via conference call on Sunday, January 21.

Atsu & Opare played a role in joining FC Porto, Waris reveals

Abdul Majeed Waris has revealed that countrymen Christian Atsu and Daniel Opare who previously featured for FC Porto advised him to join the club, amid several offers on his table.

The 26-year-old signed a season-long contract with the Dragons with an option of making the deal permanent which will cost the Estadio Dragao side £6 million.

“I’m not here for personal glory. I am very happy and ready to give everything I have so that the club can succeed and win trophies,” Waris told Porto Canal.

“It is probably the club in which my dreams can come true, to play in a top league and in the Uefa Champions League. I talked to some friends, Christian Atsu and Opare, who had been here before. They helped me decide to come here,” he added.

Waris praised Aboubakar, Marega and Brahimi and believes he will team up with them easily upfront since they have have similar qualities.

“They are fantastic players, they pretty much score all the time. I am also here to help the team score more goals and win. We can probably score a few more goals together. That is the most important thing, not who scores, but that we do it together.

“I think I can match well with them, because they have an offensive mentality, which I also have. It’s a matter of understanding each other and working together”.

Majeed Waris joins FC Porto on loan

The Ghanaian has joined the Dragons until next season after a failed move to England

Ghana striker Abdul Majeed Waris has completed a season-long move to Portuguese top-flight FC Porto from French Ligue 2 side Lorient, with an option of making the deal a permanent, the two clubs have confirmed.

The 26-year-old has been pushing for a move away from France after falling down the pecking order and reports suggested earlier that Premier League sides West Ham, Swansea City and Bournemouth had expressed interest in his services.

However, he has opted to join the Portuguese side after being promised first team action.

After making 31 appearances and scoring nine goals for Lorient last season in Ligue 1, they couldn’t survive the relegation scares but his form has dipped and could only boasts of six appearances in the second-tier including four starts and has one goal under his belt this season.

Waris will be hoping to make his Porto move count since he has been recently overlooked by head coach Kwesi Appiah as he has scored four goals in 22 appearances for Ghana since making his debut in 2012.

He was touted as one of the brightest talents to replace captain Asamoah Gyan who is at the twilight of his career.

Hans Kwofie marks Smouha debut in a defeat to Tanta FC

The Ghanaian forward came off the bench as he marked his debut game but failed to prevent the Blues from losing their first game in 2018

Ghana Premier League goal king Hans Kwofie finally played his debut game for Smouha SC in their 1-0 defeat to Tanta FC in the Egyptian Premier League on Friday at the Tanta Sports Stadium.

The 28-year-old joined the Blues from Ashanti Gold in a deal which is expected to run through to 2021 but had to wait and be cleared by the football association before he made his bow.

Seifeddine Jaziri gave Tanta the lead which proved to be the match-winner by the 43rd minute after he curled his free-kick through a human wall.

Kwofie had the brightest opportunity to draw Smouha level by the 79th minute, when he was played through by a teammate but the Ghanaian miscalculated the ball and couldn’t find a great touch.

Countryman Augustine Okrah was handed his first start for the club after scoring a screamer on his debut but he failed to replicate that feat and was substituted in the second half of the game.

Tanta brought on another Ghanaian in the shape of Joseph Ato Bissah by the 82nd minute and, he defended brilliantly as well as helped in quick counter attacks.

However, former Berekum Chelsea striker Stephen Sarfo was not named in the matchday squad and will have to wait for his turn.

AshesGyamera understands that the coach wants to work on his fitness and speed before unleashing him as he plans to bring the Ghanaians into his setup one after the other.
