Dumsor vs COVID-19: NPP can manage crises in Ghana than NDC, says Bawumia

The second gentleman of the land has thrown a subtle at the opposition party,  insisting that they are clueless in terms of solving crises

Vice president of Ghana, H.E Mahamudu Bawumia has slammed the erstwhile NDC government under John DramaninMahama, insisting that they H.E Nana Akufo-Addo and National Patriotic Party can manage crises better them.

Speaking at a press briefing on measures the government has put in place to battle the Coronavirus disease pandemic, Bawumia said that it was evidentiary clear that NDC do not have the men to lead the country especially when it is hit by crises since they messed up the economy during the era of Dumsor between 2012 and 2016.

“If you want to test the robustness of an economy, you test it in the time of crises,” Bawumia said.

“Thankfully, we have had two crises. Under the NDC there was an internally generated crises which was Dumsor and Akufo-Addo there has been an externally generated crises which is the global Coronavirus disease pandemic.

“I just want you to ask yourself how the two crises have been managed? The dumsor crises which crippled the economy for four years while electricity bills were increased and Coronavirus disease where the president has made utility bills free for three months. If there is anyone better to solve crises, the  it is obviously Akufo-Addo, ” he added.

Ghanaians will be preparing to hit the poll for the general  elections in December if the Coronavirus disease is curbed globally or a vaccine is found to reduce its spread and effects.

Akufo-Addo is seeking for a second term in office after defeating Mahama in 2012.

Odartey Lamptey advises Partey to snub Manchester United & Arsenal interest to save his career

The former Ghana star believes the box-to-box midfielder still has plenty to offer in Spain amid transfer rumours

Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Teye Partey has been urged by former Ghana international Nii Odartey Lamptey to snub any interest from Manchester United and other Premier League clubs, in order not to repeat a mistake he once committed when at the peak of his playing career.

After an incredible seven seasons at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium under coach Diego Simeone, a switch to Old Trafford has been in the headlines, with the 26-year-old a long-standing target for the Red Devils as well as Arsenal.

However, Lamptey, who had stints at Aston Villa at the peak of his career believes the Premier League does not suit his countryman’s style of play and would advise him not to repeat the same mistake he did.

“There are numerous offers coming for Thomas Teye Partey but his career will take a nosedive if he doesn’t choose his next move well. The country and league he will pick will determine his future,” Lamptey told Occean 1 TV.

“I will advise him to stay in Spain rather than going to England or Italy [although there are offers from Manchester United and Arsenal according to reports].

“Per style of play, he can move within Spain and join another top club rather than focusing on the financial gains to move out of the country because that can be suicidal,” he said.

“Sometimes, decision making can destroy your career. My move to England was a wrong one for me. Aston Villa was a wrong move because their style of play was not going to suit me. If I had gone to France or Spain at that time, it would have helped my career than going to England,” he added.

Partey boasts of 27 international appearances and ten goals with the Black Stars since making his bow in 2016.

Appreciation of a favourite poem ‘To the Virgins, to make much of Time

As a literature student, back in the university, I read several poems, of which I’ve forgotten many due to several reasons beyond my control, despite teaching English Language upon completion.

However, studying literary stylistic introduced me to this particular poem, which always motivated me with its several connotational meanings due to the words used.

And, personally, I believe this has positively affected my growth and may help you too in your life journey.

°To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time°

1. Gather ye rose-buds while ye may,
Old Time is still a-flying;
And this same flower that smiles today
Tomorrow will be dying.

2. The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,
The higher he’s a-getting,
The sooner will his race be run,
And nearer he’s to setting.

3. That age is best which is the first,
When youth and blood are warmer;
But being spent, the worse, and worst
Times still succeed the former.

4. Then be not coy, but use your time,
And while ye may, go marry;
For having lost but once your prime,
You may forever tarry.

In the above poem, Robert Herrick, who authored the piece, used several nouns including rose-bud to tell the youth to make hey while they’ve gotten the opportunities.

The bud of a rose will one day grow to become a flower and soon whither, so will the youth grow old in spite of his or her strength today.

Time, flower, today and tomorrow suggest that situations will not remain the same, therefore, as flowers blossom and whither, so will the youth be …..check line 3 of stanza 1.

Race, which was used in line 3 of stanza 2 indicates the movement from a virgin (youthful age) to adulthood.

Verbs such as gather, may, smile, run, succeed and lost were used by the poet to express experiences in life. Note that, the word Gather which was used to begin the poem depicts that, there are several opportunities to be seized by the youth.

The author also made use of literary devices including metaphor, personification, alliteration and repetition.

The word rose-bud used in the poem shows sensuality and fulfilment of earthly pleasures by the youth. The word also represents marriage as seen in line one and two of the last stanza.

Marriage may not be your target but at a point in one’s life, it will become necessary since society may judge you with it as one of the requirements of a successful person.

There are also personifications like “And, the same flower that smiles today; Tomorrow will be dying.”
Here, Herrick personifies flowers because it is human beings that smile and not flowers.

He further describes the ‘Sun‘ that, it is getting ‘higher’ as ‘race’ that ‘run’. Also, he personifies the sun when he says “And, nearer he’s to setting”.

The sun does not set like human beings, moreover, its shining is due to the rotation of the earth.

USE YOUR TIME AND OPPORTUNITIES VERY WELL.

Asante Kotoko in another financial tussle, as Chibsah’s consortium chases them for $59,000

The Porcupine Warriors would have to jump over another financial hurdle few days after clearing themselves at Fifa

Asante Kotoko are reported to be in another financial tussle with Club Consult Africa, an agency owned by former player Yussif Alhassan Chibsah.

Reports in the local media suggest that Kotoko owe Chibsah’s company a sum of $59,000 which include $30,000 as agency fee for brokering Kwame Conte Bonsu’s deal to Esperance Sportive  du Tunis as well as $29,000 meant for securing a deal for former striker Abdul Fatawu Safiu to Swedish Superetan side Trelleborgs in 2019.

However, reports suggest that Kotoko are bent on not paying the money because Strike, which is a kit manufacturing company and provides kits for the club is also under Club Consult Africa, are yet to pay the Kumasi-based club their dividends from the sales of jerseys and other souvenirs since entering in an agreement two seasons ago.

Kotoko’s top hierarchy believes that they have given Strike the needed mileage and support to become a good brand in Ghana and Africa at large while participating in Caf Champions League and Confederation Cup and deserves their share of the dividends.

Asante Kotoko set free after paying $240,000 fine to Fifa -reports

The Porcupine Warriors are free from entering the transfer market after settling the fine placed on them by the world’s football governing body

Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko have paid a sum of $240,000 to Tunisian club Esperance Sportive du Tunis following a ruling by Fifa weeks ago, according to Kumasi-based Light FM.

Kotoko were found guilty of wrongfully registering and using former player Emmanuel Clottey for games and although several warning letters were sent to them by the Tunisian club earlier, they were adamant to the red flags.

Kotoko were initially fined $180,000 in 2015 since the player had a running contract with Esperance but an interest of $45,000 and a additional fine of $15,000 were added to the amount after failing to meet the deadline.

In effect, Fifa gave Kotoko a new deadline of May 10 to settle every amount or face a transfer ban for three seasons but the club’s executive board chairman Kwame Kyei is reported to have wired the amount into Esperance’s bank account and as well as that of Fifa and the Tunisian club has also acknowledged receipt.

Therefore, Kotoko are free from any impending punishments from Fifa and can even chase the transfer fee of former player Kwame ‘Conte’ Bonsu who transfer fee from Kotoko to Esperance last year is yet to be settled.
