‘C.K Akonnor should consider resigning as Black Stars coach’; J.E Sarpong advises

The Black Stars gaffer has come under intense pressure following his side’s defeat to Bafana Bafana on Monday in the World Cup qualifiers

Ghana coach Charles Kwablah Akonnor has been advised to consider resigning from his post by veteran coach J.E Sarpong.

According to Sarpong, Akonnor can vacate his post if he feels top members of Ghana Football Association are dictating for him

“CK Akonnor was appointed by the current leadership of the Ghana Football Association [GFA] but it seems some people are pulling the strings,” Sarpong said.

“He now have two assistant coaches but still struggling to grind the results.

“If CK Akonnor feels he is being dictated to and being left frustrated, I will only urge him to walk out from the job because when you employ somebody to work for you, give him or her that free hands to work but in the case of the Black Stars that is not what we are seeing.

“It is frustrating because we need the team to get the needed results,” he added.

Akonnor previously had stints with Hearts of Oak, Asante Kotoko and Ashanti Gold just like his first assistant coach David Duncan.

Ghana will host Zimbabwe next month in the third game of the group and a win is imminent for Akonnor or else he could be shown the exit.

C.K Akonnor gives GENUINE reasons why Black Stars lost to South Africa in World Cup qualifier

The Black Stars coach has explained why they could not at least pick a point against Bafana Bafana in Johannesburg on Monday

Ghana coach Charles Kwablah Akonnor has insisted that his substitutions went wrong against South Africa leading to the 1-0 defeat in the second Group G game of the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers on Monday in Johannesburg.

Ghana made four changes in the second half with Joel Fameye, Andre Ayew, Richard Ofori and Majeed Ashimeru coming off for Kwame Opoku, Samuel Owusu, Lawrence Ati Zigi and Baba Iddrisu respectively and Akonnor believes that led to the defeat.

Bongokuhle Hlongwane capitalised on a poor defensive display and gave the Bafana Bafana the much needed goal to carry the day.

“Well, we started very well in the first half, tactically we were very disciplined. It went the way we want it. [But] we were not clinical upfront, that’s the problem. But I was satisfied with the way we played in terms of controlling the game,” Akonnor said.

“In the second half, we somehow lost the midfield in terms of how we want to play because we believed that we could win the game.

“We did one or two substitutions, which really went the other way round and we kept dropping and dropping,” he added.

Ghana failed to record even one shot on target as they had only two shots in the game. They will host Zimbabwe next month at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium.

A lot of Ghanaians have began a campaign to have Akonnor sacked as the head coach since they believe he lacks the technical ability to lead the country.

He was appointed to replace Kwesi Appiah who qualifed Ghana to their last World Cup in 2014 only to be sacked in his second coming because he failed to win 2019 Africa Cup of Nations staged in Egypt.

Ghanaians want C.K Akonnor sacked after defeat to South Africa with #SackCK trend on Twitter

A section of Ghanaians have taken to social media to express their displeasure at the Black Stars coach following his side’s defeat to South Africa

Ghana coach Charles Kwablah Akonnor has come under an intense pressure from a section of Ghanaians following the Black Stars’ 1-0 defeat to South Africa in the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers on Monday.

After struggling to narrowly defeated Ethiopia last week, Akonnor’s charges displayed yet another performance in Johannesburg and some Ghanaians want him to lose his job.

Ghana, who are hoping to return to the World Cup after missing the last edition held in Russia, currently sit second in Group G with three points.

Ghana will host Zimbabwe next month in the third group game and a win is imminent.

South Africa 1-0 Ghana: Bafana Bafana defeat tactless Akonnor’s Black Stars to top Group G of World Cup qualifiers

The Bafana Bafana have moved up to lead Group G of the World Cup qualifiers after defeating the Black Stars on Monday

South Africa defeated Ghana 1-0 in the second game of 2022 FIFA World Cup Group G qualifiers.

The Black Stars had six changes in their squad that defeated Ethiopia 1-0 in the opening game on Friday at the Cape Coast Sports.

Hearts of Oak captain Fatawu Mohammed was handed a starting berth to replace Andy Yiadom in defence while Jonathan Mensah was also picked ahead of Asante Kotoko defender Abdul Ganiu to replace Leicester City defender Daniel Amartey who did not travel with the team.

Former WAFA left back Gideon Mensah took over the role of Abdul Baba Rahman while Asokwa Deportivo former star Joel Fameye partnered Andre Ayew upfront ahead of Kwame Opoku due to the unavailability of Jordan Ayew.

Yaw Yeboah also came in for injured Jeffrey Schlupp in midfield to partner Wakaso Mubarak and Emmanuel Lomotey who surprisingly started ahead of Baba Iddrisu of Real Mallorca fame.

Ghana started the game on a bright note as they surged forward to look for the opener.

Wakaso Mubarak tried a long ranger by the third minute but the South Africa goalkeeper easily dealt with it.

On the 31st minute, South Africa nearly opened the scoring through Mokoena. The midfielder’s free-kick was spilled by goalkeeper Richard Ofori but the rebound was wasted.

Fameye was lucky not to have been given a red card after his rushing tackle in Mokoena. The former Asokwa Deportivo man was only cautioned with yellow card.

South Africa were denied the opener by the 37th minute after Percy Tau connected a tailor-measured cross which went past goalkeeper Ofori but the referee ruled it as offside.

After the break, Ofori made another mistake but Percy Tau couldn’t punish him once again.

South Africa finally had the open by the 83rd minute through Hlongwane after they persistent.

Ghana pushed men upfront in search of the equaliser but it was too late for Akonnor’s men who rarely created a chance.

Ghana will host Zimbabwe next month at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium.

Ghana recorded a slim win over Ethiopia in the opening game of the qualifiers and would hope to make it two wins out of two games.

Footballer Jean-Pierre Adams confirmed dead after 40 years in Coma

The former Le Blues player has finally kicked the bucket after going into coma since 1982 due to wrong anesthesiologist

Several French channels have reported the death of ex-foootballer Jean-Pierre Adams this morning.

He played for clubs such as PSG, Nice and the French National Team.

Following a normal knee injury in 1982, he was hospitalised for surgery at the Édouard Herriot Hospital in Lyon. The anesthesiologist made an error during the surgery which starved his brain of oxygen and he went into coma.

He has been in coma since 1982, nearly forty years, unable to move any part of the body except open and close his eyes.

His wife, Bernadette, who he married in 1969, refused to consider euthanasia (the practice of intentionally ending life to relieve pain and suffering) and continued to be by his side until his death this morning.

Rest well legend, but the real hero, is the wife.

‘My tactics & strategy will work against South Africa’- Akonnor assures Ghanaians

The Black Stars will take on the Bafana Bafana on Monday afternoon in a cliffhanger encounter but Charles Akonnor believes he will be up to the task

Ghana coach Charles Kwablah Akonnor has insisted that his tactics and strategies will work to perfection against South Africa in the second game of Group G in the ongoing 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.

The Black Stars struggled to defeat Ethiopia 1-0 in the opening game last week at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium thanks to Wakaso Mubarak’s long range effort.

After the game, a lot of Ghanaians launched a scathing attack on Akonnor and his players for their shambolic performance but he has assured them of an improved outing at the Soccer City Sports Stadium against South Africa.

“What is important is that we have to be efficient. Against Ethiopia, we didn’t excite you guys but we were efficient and it’s because we won. As we speak now, we are on top of the table and so we are not going to allow influence of outside pressure to disturb us,” Akonnor said

“Like I said, we are focused, we are here, we have seen South Africa against Zimbabwe, we have a strategy and we believe that it will work.

“We believe that even if they change their style of play we have an antidote to it and we will move out of this place with three points,” he added.

Ghana will miss the services of seven players who played a part in the win against Ethiopia when they come up with South Africa. They include Baba Rahman, Jordan Ayew, Jeffrey Schlupp, Andy Yiadom, Daniel Amartey, Kamaldeen Sulemana and Kofi Kyereh Daniel.

The Black Stars currently tops Group G with three points, two points above South Africa who shared the spoils goalless with Zimbabwe.

The next round of matches will be played in October and Ghana will host Zimbabwe while South Africa travel to Addis Ababa to lock horns with Ethiopia.

Winners of each of the ten groups will be paired after the second round of the qualifiers for a knockout phase in order to select five countries which will represent Africa at the next World Cup to be staged in Qatar.

‘I don’t follow social media criticisms; Ghana will silence South Africa’ – Black Stars deputy captain

Deputy Black Stars captain Richard Ofori will play against his peers from the South African Premier League if given the nod by Coach Charles Akonnor in Ghana’s World Cup qualifier against Bafana Bafana at the FNB stadium in Johannesburg.

The Orlando Pirates goalkeeper has been speaking to the media ahead of the match. The full transcript is captured below.

On thoughts about the game

This game is very important not for only me but the entire nation. We know how Ghanaians love the game and how important it is to win this match. Because we want to go to the World Cup, that’s the stage that every player wants to play so it’s very important for the team and the Nation. I am going to face most of players that I know very well. I know their qualities, they are very good. But at the end of the day we need to show that we are Ghana and the most important are, we need to win.

On playing in South Africa and whether it plays to Ghana’s advantage

We can’t say we have an advantage over them because these days football has changed. Everyone knows how to play, all the countries have developed and a case in point is the recent AFCON in Egypt where Madagascar shocked the world. But it’s a matter of who wants it more.

On what is on the minds of his colleagues

I know my colleagues, we have been together for a couple of days and we want it badly so at the end of the day it’s just a matter of who wants it more so it is determination and we are determined and we hope everything will go well on the field of play so that at the end of the fay we will make our country proud.

On social media comments and criticisms

In the first place, I don’t read those things though. I don’t go on social media or Twitter to read those things. I haven’t seen something about me before; I haven’t seen something about me before. But definitely we are in a country that expects more from us so wearing this jersey means a lot because the people expects more.

On winning and not necessarily playing well

The things our predecessors did have made things what it is today. That is the nature of our country, so you need to adapt to the pressure and make sure you make them proud by winning. One thing I understand in the game is that, all the big teams in the World, it’s not a matter of how well you play; it’s a matter of who is winning and who has won trophies, which is the most important thing that everyone talks about. So the most important thing is to understand that as a nation we need to win as a team. The victory is the most important thing, so we go in, we hope everything goes well and hopefully we carry the three points.

Hearts of Oak to know their fate in Champions League after soldiers claim to seize power in Guinea

The fate of Guinea’s President Alpha Condé is unclear after an unverified video showed him surrounded by soldiers, who said they had seized power.

They appeared on national TV claiming to have dissolved the government and that could affect the Caf Champions League game between CI Kamsar of Guinea and Hearts of Oak from Ghana which was scheduled to take place in Conakry on September 12.

Although, Caf has indefinitely scheduled the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifier between Guinea and Morocco which was slated for Monday, September 5 in Conakry, they were silent on the Champions League clash.

However, the defence ministry said the attempted takeover had been thwarted by the presidential guard.

This follows hours of heavy gunfire near the presidential palace in the capital, Conakry.

UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres has condemned the apparent coup and demanded the immediate release of President Condé.

The West African country of Guinea is rich in natural resources but years of unrest and mismanagement mean it is one of the world’s poorest countries.

President barefoot on a sofa

The TV address featured nine unnamed soldiers, several draped in the red, gold and green national flag, who said they had taken over because of rampant corruption, mismanagement and poverty.

Calling themselves the National Committee for Reconciliation and Development, they said the constitution had been dissolved and that there would be consultations to create a new, more inclusive one.

Numerous reports say the coup was led by an elite unit headed by a former French legionnaire, Lt Col Mamady Doumbouya.

In one video, which the BBC has not been able to verify, soldiers ask President Condé, 83, to confirm he is unharmed but he refuses to respond.

Sitting barefoot on a sofa wearing jeans and a printed shirt, he does not have any visible injuries. His current whereabouts are unknown.

Those behind the coup said that all land and air borders had been closed for a week.

However, according to the defence ministry, forces loyal to the president have “contained the threat and repelled the group of assailants”.

Earlier, the only bridge connecting the mainland to the Kaloum peninsular, which houses most ministries and the presidential palace, was sealed off while many soldiers, some heavily armed, were posted around the palace, a military source told Reuters news agency.

There are unconfirmed reports that three soldiers have been killed.

As a result of the unrest, Guinea’s football World Cup qualifying match against Morocco at home on 6 September has been postponed.

Football body FIFA said the decision was made to “ensure the safety and security of all players and to protect all match officials”.

President Condé was re-elected for a controversial third term in office amid violent protests last year.

The veteran opposition leader was first elected in 2010 in the country’s first democratic transfer of power. Despite overseeing some economic progress, he has since been accused of presiding over numerous human rights abuses and harassment of his critics.
