Kotoko deny Daniel Darkwah capture

Asante Kotoko communications director Obed Acheampong has rejected suggestions that the club have completed the signing of Daniel Darkwah in a two-year deal from Aduana Stars after pictures of him holding Kotoko jersey got leaked on social media.

The 22-year-old was spotted in Kumasi over the weekend and AshesGyamera understands that he is currently lodging at Sports Hotel, which is owned by Kotoko’s chief executive officer, but Acheampong insists nothing official has been concluded between them and the player.

“Daniel Darkwa is a good player but Asante Kotoko have not signed him as it is being circulated in the media,” Acheampong told Abusua FM.

“I do not know where all these artworks are coming from. Officially, he has not been signed and he can’t be regarded as a Kotoko player now.

“This doesn’t mean he can’t join us but he is not one of our players and the record must be set straight,” he added.

Acheampong, however, insists Kotoko will defeat Hearts of Oak in the semifinals of the 2018 Ghalca G6 tournament schedule for Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Wednesday.

“We are treating tomorrow’s match against Hearts of Oak as a pre-season fixture and there is no pressure on us. Hearts need this cup badly. They need this cup more than anything on this earth but it doesn’t mean we will lose,” he said.

Despite the denial, our outfit understands that Darkwah will be unveiled after the game against Hearts.

Suarez insists he was right to block Adiyiah’s header with hands at 2010 World Cup

Barcelona superstar Luis Suarez has opened up on things that were going through his head in the moments during and after his infamous handball for Uruguay in the quarterfinals of 2010 World Cup against Ghana.

The 30-year-old blocked Dominic Adiyiah’s goal-bound header in the dying minutes of extra-time when the game was still 1-1.

Although, Ghana were awarded a penalty and Suarez subsequently sent off, Asamoah Gyan fluffed that chance after the resulting kick was denied by the crossbar.

“The truth is, it was a bit of everything,” Suarez recalled as he sat down with Barça team-mate Gerard Pique for a lengthy chat for publication by The Players’ Tribune.

“Of being depressed, of being sad, of being sent off. Because we were going to lose, but if they weren’t scoring that goal we weren’t going to lose [so I was right to block it].

“You get up within 30 seconds when he takes the penalty kick, the satisfaction of taking a risk in a situation of which I have been blamed for anti-fair play. However, the Ghana player missing the penalty is not my fault.”

He added: “I didn’t kick anyone or anything like that, that’s why I think that I celebrated like that, for having taken a risk for something that was worth it.

And I remember that I celebrated it more than a goal. I left screaming and went to the locker room to watch the penalty kicks (in the shootout). And, the truth is, it was painful watching the penalty kicks in the locker room.”

Suarez also believes that their defeat to Netherlands in the semifinals would’ve been different if Uruguay had the full complement of their squad. Jorge Fucile was banned for multiple yellow cards, while captain Diego Lugano was also out injured.

“It’s easy to talk now, but yeah, if we would have played the semi-final against Holland with Diego Lugano, who in that moment was spectacular, Jorge Fucile, I believe, the best left wing-back of the World Cup, and me, who had been suspended,” he explained.

“If the three of us would have played, it would have been different.”

Ghana’s president Akufo-Addo can’t save corrupt officials, says Bawumia

Ghana’s vice-president Dr Mahamadu Bawumia has sent a strong warning to Ghanaians who are expected to face special prosecutor Martin Amidu in an alleged corrupt practices that there is no escape route.

Bawumia, who was a special guest at the New Year School and Conference of University of Ghana on Monday, believes nobody is above the laws of Ghana and not even the first gentleman of the country, H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo can be able to save their blushes.

“With the appointment of Martin Amidu, the message is very clear that he [President Akufo-Addo] is very serious about dealing with this issue (corruption). It is not a partisan issue; you can have corrupt people across the partisan divide.
“The message is that, not even the President can protect you if you are corrupt,” he added.

AshesGyamera.com understands that Amidu will begin his prosecution process next month with several opposition party (NDC) members in his list.

CAS rejects Ghanaian referee Lamptey’s appeal on lifetime ban by Fifa

0

Ghanaian referee Joseph Lamptey’s appeal against his lifetime ban has been rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the judicial body has announced.
Following an official complaint from Senegal, the 44-year-old was found guilty in March last year for awarding a controversial penalty to South Africa in their 2-1 win over Senegal during a 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifier at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
The game was replayed, with Senegal claiming a win to qualify to the final tournament holding in Russia.

However, Lamptey appealed against the ruling and insisted that the punishment was ‘harsh and inhumane’ but CAS has further revealed that the Ghanaian intentionally took two dubious decisions to help a betting company achieve a specific number of goals in that particular game.
“FIFA has taken note of the motivated arbitral award of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) confirming the lifetime ban imposed by FIFA’s Disciplinary and Appeal Committees on Ghanaian match official Joseph Odartei Lamptey,” a statement from Fifa read.
“FIFA’s judicial bodies had banned Mr Lamptey for life for breaching art. 69 par 1 (unlawfully influencing match results) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code during the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia qualifying match between South Africa and Senegal on 12 November 2016.
“In its ruling, CAS concluded that Mr Lamptey had intentionally taken two wrong decisions with the sole purpose of enabling a specific number of goals to be scored that would make pertinent bets successful.
“CAS concluded that there was an obvious link between these intentionally wrong decisions and a deviation from an expected betting pattern and consequently found Mr Lamptey guilty of having unlawfully influenced the result of the match.”
The statement added: “This CAS decision underlines FIFA’s commitment to protecting the integrity of football and its zero-tolerance policy on match manipulation, while also highlighting the effectiveness of its current agreement with Sportradar that uses their Fraud Detection System, which played an important role in this case.”
Lamptey, a high-ranking officer in Ghana’s immigration service, was handed a six-month ban by CAF in 2011 when he awarded a dubious goal to Esperance de Tunis against Al Ahly in a CAF Champions League game.

Zidane faces sack after Villarreal loss

Real Madrid’s problems at home continue. Zinedine Zidane’s side lost 1-0 to Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday in a fresh disappointment that leaves Los Blancos well adrift in the Liga table – and the Frenchman fighting for his job in the second half of the season.

Zidane’s side had failed to beat Valencia, Levante, Betis, Tottenham, Fuenlabrada, Barcelona and Numancia at home in 2017-18 and now Villarreal have become the third visiting team (after Barca and Betis) to leave their famous stadium with a win this term.

The Spanish and European champions claimed five titles in 2017, a club record, yet there were alarm bells before Christmas as they were brushed aside by Barca in a one-sided Clasico clash.

If Barca beat Real Sociedad on Sunday, Madrid (with a game in hand) will now be 17 points adrift at the halfway stage of the Primera Division, with no guarantee of finishing in the top four either as things stand, given Villarreal are now just one point behind them in fifth.

This was a season in which Madrid were supposed to dominate. Having won back-to-back Champions League crowns under Zidane, plus a first Liga title since 2011-12, this looked like the start of something. Instead, it could be the end.

Many of the team’s issues were in evidence against Villarreal. Tactically, Real were all too predictable as most of their chances came from hopeful balls into the box. With players like Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Isco in their ranks, Zidane’s side are not nearly as creative as they should be and it showed here.

The French coach is an excellent motivator and a master man-manager. He is no tactical genius, however, and his side has been reliant upon individual brilliance for much of his successful tenure.

However, with his famous forwards either injured or out of form this season, goals have been hard to come by, especially in La Liga. And prior to this fixture, none of his players had scored more than four times this season in the Primera Division.

That had never happened before in Madrid’s entire history and the sorry stat did not change in this match either. Real attempted 28 shots in total, more than any other side in La Liga this season, but many of those were speculative efforts.

Cristiano Ronaldo had 11 of those himself, but the Portuguese left his shooting boots at home. On one occasion, he was denied by a stunning Sergio Asenjo save, while he also had a decent penalty shout turned down.

Again, though, this was another poor performance from the 32-year-old, who offered little in terms of link-up play outside the box and was left frustrated along with his team-mates after Pablo Fornals’ late winner.

Playing like this, Madrid are simply not a very scary side and there is much work to be done if Los Blancos are to have any chance of beating Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 of the Champions League.

With their La Liga hopes evaporated, Real must focus now on Europe and also the Copa del Rey as they seek more silverware at the end of the season. And with his forwards flagging, Zidane needs a better tactical plan to make Madrid competitive again.

Less than a month after he led Los Blancos to a fifth title in 2017 and a seventh in his reign, the Frenchman faces a major fight to save his job.

2017 my lucky year — King Promise

For an industry which doesn’t favour young artistes, it’s always great to gain attention in the mainstream and Afrobeats artiste, King Promise can’t be thankful enough for the favour 2017 brought him.

The graduate of the Central University College, who shot to fame with his track, Oh Yeah admitted to Showbiz in an interview that he had a great year.

“Yes, I will say 2017 was my year of luck. It’s not as if I was new in the system but the year gave me a good reason to hope for better days in the industry.

I got the attention many equally talented young artistes are still struggling to get and I’m so grateful to Ghanaians for the support,” he said.

Among his many blessings he recounted were the release of songs such as Oh Yeah, Thank God, Double Trouble featuring Sarkodie and the new Selfish which is getting a lot of airplay.

“My team and I were very hopeful when we dropped Selfish. It was ready at the time Oh Yeah was released but we planned to hold on for a while and its success has been inspiring,” he said.

King Promise’s talent is not being appreciated only in Ghana but outside as well. In December last year, British-born Nigerian producer and recording artiset, Maleek Berry, commended him after his performance at the Detty Rave concert at the La Pleasure Beach.

King Promise acknowledges that such endorsements are morale boosters for him. Managed by renowned sound engineer, Kill Beatz who produced Selfish, the young graduate is looking forward to another promising year to churn out good songs.

As the awards season begins, King Promise’s name is being mentioned alongside others for trophies but he says that isn’t his focus now.

“My aim is to produce songs my fans can relate to. Although awards are important, my main focus is to produce good songs and take Ghanaian music worldwide,” he said.

Power tariffs cut by 14% – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced that from January this year, non-residential users of electricity in the country would enjoy an average of 14% reduction in electricity tariffs.

According to President Akufo-Addo, not only has Government succeeded in normalising the power situation in the country, “we now want to boost private business in our country.”

Thus, the President indicated that “from January this year, the non-residential tariff rate, which is the rate which includes all of you here, is being reduced by an average of 14%. For barbers, it is being reduced by 18%; for hairdressers and beauticians, 15.7%, and for tailors, 9.8%.”

President Akufo-Addo continued: “An average bill last year was GH¢562 a month. With this reduction from January, it is coming down to GH¢473 a month, which means GH¢88 has been taken from the electricity tariff that you pay. We want to encourage private business, and make business stand on its feet.”

The President made this known on Monday, 15th January, 2017, at the opening of the 8th Salon Academy of the National Association of Beauticians and Hairdressers, held at the Mensah Sarbah Hall, University of Ghana, Legon.

Expressing his appreciation to the Association for their support of his candidature in the run-up to the 2016 elections, President Akufo-Addo noted that one of the pledges he made to them, the implementation of the Free Senior High School policy, is now a reality.

“By the grace of God, Free SHS, which some said was not possible or would be possible only after 20 years, is now a reality in our country. Free SHS has come to stay. It is going to be a central feature of the education architecture of our country. We are not going to go back on it. By 2020, all students in form 1, form 2 and form 3, would enjoy the free SHS policy,” he said.

This statement was met with a rapturous round of approval from the hundreds and hundreds of beauticians and hair dressers at the packed Mensah Sarbah Hall.

In response to the request by the President of the Association, Mrs Joyce Lamptey, for tax exemptions for start-up businesses, the President stated that in the 2018 budget, there is a provision which ensures that young entrepreneurs, up to the age of 35, will enjoy a tax holiday for the first five years of operation, before being taxed in the subsequent years.

Touching on the provision of skills training, he revealed that, up until now, all the institutions responsible for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in the country, were under so many organisations.

“My government has made the decision to centralise all of them (TVET) under the Ministry of Education, so we can scale up TVET training, and make it better and more robust for you. The demand for an industrial park in every region is part of the NPP manifesto, and you know that all the pledges I have made to the Ghanaian people, I am going to fulfil each and every one of them,” he said.

In conclusion, President Akufo-Addo appealed for the continued support of the Association, stressing that “this government is your government; it is the government of the private sector. Whatever we can do to strengthen the private sector, we will do it. We have come to do a job to raise Ghana up, and, with your support, we will raise Ghana up. The Black Star is going to shine and shine and shine again.”

My PhD not fake; I’ll sue EC: Ayariga

The flag bearer of the All People’s Congress (APC), Hassan Ayariga, has denied claims by the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana that his doctorate degree is fake.

According to him, the university he obtained the degree from is a recognised institution in Spain, therefore, the EC could have verified before making such a claim.

His comments follow the decision of the EC to report him to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) over a number of alleged crimes he is said to have committed in the filling of presidential nominations for the 2016 polls.

The EC said the APC leader, who was disqualified from contesting in the December 7 elections, among other infractions, obtained his doctorate degree from a non-existent or unrecognised institution.

The election management body added that it detected about 30 anomalies, some bordering on criminality, which required referring the APC leader’s case to the CID for investigations.

But reacting to these claims in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson, host of Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM on Friday October 21, Mr Ayariga said: “This is a continuation of another lie. The EC will need to tread cautiously because I will make them unpopular in this country with all the facts. If you come out to say Dr Ayariga has a fake doctorate degree, do you have a copy of the degree (certificate) to know whether it is fake or not? You don’t have a copy of my degree, how do you know whether my degree is fake or not?”

“As I speak to you, go online, look for Great Achievers University College and Seminary. It is in Spain. Search to see whether it will come out or not. And I will send you a copy of my degree and you can send it to the university to prove whether it is fake or not. That is another case I will sue them (EC) [over] in court. They should be very careful. There are laws in this country – don’t come out and attack the integrity of somebody when your integrity is questionable.”

Bitcoin: Tread cautiously – Gov’t told

The government of Ghana should exercise restraint in committing a large amount of the country’s resources into bitcoin investment, Dr Kobby Mensah, a lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School, has cautioned.

For him, there are so many uncertainties regarding bitcoins. However, he said the country can take advantage of the technology behind cryptocurrencies and apply it in other sectors to the benefit of the nation.

“As a country, let us focus on blockchain and see how blockchain can help us to decentralise our system and make it more transparent. I think we can go full swing on that but when it comes to cyptocurrencies like bitcoin, there should be caution,” he told Dr Etse Sikanku on Class91.3FM’s World Affairs programme on Friday, 12 January.

A cryptocurrency is a digital asset designed to work as a medium of exchange that uses cryptography to secure its transactions, to control the creation of additional units, and to verify the transfer of assets.

Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency and worldwide payment system. It is the first decentralised digital currency, as the system works without a central bank or single administrator. The network is peer-to-peer and transactions take place between users directly, without an intermediary. These transactions are verified by network nodes through the use of cryptography and recorded in a public distributed ledger called a blockchain.

Bitcoin was invented by an unknown person or group of people under the name Satoshi Nakamoto and released as open-source software in 2009.

Following the increase in the price of bitcoin and further expectations of increases in the price in the future, some analysts are advocating the commitment of government funds by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) into the investment of bitcoin. However, Dr Mensah is advising government to hasten slowly.

“I think we have to tread cautiously. I wouldn’t say we should speedily, although I’m a fan of the technology. I’m the number one person who recommends technology adoption.

“I think that we should proceed cautiously when it comes to bitcoins and cryptocurrencies themselves. As I said, we have 700-plus active ones and you wouldn’t know which one the world is going to adopt and what policies, whether there would be conversions [from one cyptocurrency to the other]

“For me, I would recommend that we adopt a 70-20-10 approach to technology adoption. For example, we invest 70 per cent of our resources to areas that we know work very well, 20 per cent into other areas we also know that they are developing and then we experiment with the 10 per cent, maybe bitcoin or any other cryptocurrency we think for some time to come, will be the big deal. So, we have to take that cautious approach as opposed to going full swing,” he explained.

He is rather advocating the adoption of blockchain technology to improve the efficiency of various sectors where it can be applied.

For him, what “we should probably invest very much more in, is the idea of blockchain because blockchain is not only for cryptocurrencies but for so many applications.

“Blockchain makes the system open and you can even use it to check fake medicines and many other things because everyone has access to it, it is instant and almost like what we call in real time. Additionally, you don’t have a centralised system for information. So information asymmetry is somehow remote”.
