Ghana bag $700,000 after 2022 Kirin Cup participation

The Black Stars were paid a whopping amount of $700,000 following their participation in the invitational tournament

Ghana Football Association have been paid $700,000 following Black Stars’ participation in 2022 Kirin Cup held in Japan AshesGyamera.com can report.

The Black Stars placed third in the tournament after defeating Chile 3-1 on penalties following a goalless draw in regulation time.

Ghana, who were paid $650,000 as appearance fees just like Tunisia and Chile, were thrashed 4-1 by host nation Japan in the semifinals last week.

However, they recovered on Tuesday to pick up bronze medal after defeating Chile 3-1 on penalties thanks to goalkeeper Manaf Nurudeen’s heroics during the shootouts.

For placing third, the Black Stars were paid $50,000 which adds up to the $650,000 to make it $700,000.

Meanwhile, Tunisia got $900,000 since they won the tournament and took the prize money of $250,000.

Ghana used this game as a preparation for 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Angola in September as well as a dress rehearsal for 2022 Fifa World Cup to be staged in Qatar in November.

The Black Stars laboured to win Bronze at the 2022 Kirin Cup despite going down by two men

Nine-man Ghana defeated Chile 3-1 on penalties in the third-place game of 2022 Kirin Cup in Japan on Tuesday. The game travelled to penalties after it ended goalless in regulation time.

Ahead of the game, Ghana coach Otto Addo made five changes in the squad to face Chile in the third-place game.

Goalkeeper Ati-zigi who conceded four goals against Japan was dropped for Abdul Manaf Nurudeen while Baba Rahman started in defence ahead of Hearts of Oak defender Dennis Korsah.

Benjamin Tetteh, Afena-Gyan started in attack together with captain Andre Ayew.

Benjamin Tetteh was played through in Chile’s box but his last ditch effort was denied by crossbar on 50th minute.

Ghana came close to opening the scoring once again after Andre Ayew’s powerful shot was parried away by Chile goalkeeper. Benjamin Tetteh’s header from the resulting corner kick was denied by the crossbar.

Alidu Seidu was sent off by the 67th minute after a poor tackle on a Chile player.

Ten minutes later, Wakaso Mubarak was also sent off for challenging the referee’s decision after a Ghanaian player was brought down.

The game ended goalless as Chile failed to capitalised on the numerical advantage handed them.

During penalty shootouts, former Ghana youth goalkeeper Manaf saved two of the four kicks by Chile with another going off target.

Asante Kotoko were crowned champions of 2021/22 Ghana Premier League season when they hammered Elmina Sharks 3-0 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday.

After being confirmed champions of the top-flight a fortnight ago, following a 1-1 draw in the Ashanti derby against Ashanti Gold at the Len Clay Sports Stadium, Kotoko finally laid their hands on the coveted trophy.

Imoro Ibrahim shot Kotoko ahead in the coronation game against Elmina Sharks with a sublime free-kick by minute.

Substitute Georges Mfegue Rodrigues added two goals after the break to thwart any sign of a possible comeback from the relegated opponent.

Kotoko have now won 24 Ghana Premier League titles and it will be 25 if Ghana Football Association finally accept the Normalisation Committee Cup they won in 2019 as a league title.

Kotoko will now face debutants Accra Lions on final day of the season at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Porcupine Warriors will represent Ghana in the Caf Champions League while the winner between Bechem United and Hearts of Oak in the final of the FA Cup take over the Caf Confederation Cup slot.

Hearts of Oak forward Daniel Afriyie Barnieh finally played his first game for Ghana in a 4-1 defeat to Japan in 2022 Kirin Cup on Friday.

The 19-year-old who was handed a late call up ahead of the tournament could not get a starting role but came on as a substitute.

With Ghana down by 3-1, Barnieh was thrown into the game to replace Andy Yiadom who was playing the left wing back position.

Yamane Miki opened the scoring on 29th minute before Jordan Ayew pulled even on the stroke of half time.

Nitoma Kaoru made it 2-1 after the break following a defensive mixup before Kubo Takefusa and Daizen Maeda made it a none contest.

Barnieh was shown a yellow card on the stroke of full time after a poor challenge on one of the Japanese player.

Jordan Ayew’s goal against Japan equals Abedi Pele’s record for Ghana

The striker finally equalled the number of goals scored by his father for the Black Stars with a wonderful finish against Japan

Ghana striker Jordan Ayew was on target against Japan when Black Stars lost 4-1 in the semifinals of the 2022 Kirin Cup on Friday.

The 31-year-old was handed a starting place upfront alongside his brother Andre Ayew who captained the team.

Ayew then latched onto a pass from Antwi Agyei and powerfully sent in a shot to bring Ghana level on the stroke of half time.

The goal meant that the Crystal Palace striker has scored his first goal for Ghana in 2022 and only his second goal on international duties since 2020.

However, in spite of his recent poor goalscoring record, Ayew has taken his tally to 19 goals since making his debut for Ghana in 2010.

Ayew’s best scoring moment for Ghana was in 2015 where he netted five goals in 14 games.

He is now on the same number of goals with his father – Abedi Ayew Pele – who also scored 19 goals after 73 games for Ghana before finally going on retirement.
