Spectacular evening of entertainment to welcome Queen’s Baton Relay into city centre

Birmingham as the Proud Host City of the Commonwealth Games will welcome the Queen’s Baton Relay to the city centre with a colourful, fun-filled evening of entertainment in Victoria Square next week.

As the Queen’s Baton Relay enters the final stage of its 294-day journey around the Commonwealth to the Alexander Stadium – to mark the start of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games on 28 July – Brum is set to stage a very special homecoming.

The free event on 27 July will bring together dance, music and performance from the city’s rich and diverse communities and be hosted by presenter Radzi Chinyanganya with rapper SANITY outside the Council House.

Dhol drummers, Bollywood and street dancers, a brass band, poets, singers, rappers and DJs will all provide the entertainment before and after the baton arrives in Victoria Square at 6.45pm by a special guest.

Earlier in the day Batonbearers will have visited a wide range of city locations including the Botanical Gardens, University of Birmingham, Sarehole Mill, the Balti Triangle, and stopped off for community celebrations in Cotteridge Park, Swanshurst Park and Small Heath Park.

The Baton will also take in the Gay Village, Gas Street Basin and journey in a tram down Broad Street in order to reach the homecoming party.

Cllr Ian Ward, Leader of Birmingham City Council, said: “The Commonwealth Games are almost upon us and after four-and-a-half years of planning and preparation, we’re ready for Birmingham’s biggest ever event.

“As the excitement really starts to build, the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games Batonbearers will complete a two-day lap of honour around our great city – visiting our many communities and iconic settings – before arriving in the city centre on 27 July for an evening of entertainment and celebration that is open to everyone.”

Rapper SANITY, who will be co-hosting the event with Radzi and taking part as a Batonbearer, said: “I’m thrilled to be a part of the Homecoming event. We’ll be celebrating a range of Birmingham talents, communities and cultures that really commemorate our fantastic city.

Brum. Our time has come…the Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay arrives in the Proud Host City in one week’s time!

In just one week the Queen’s Baton will arrive in the Proud Host City of Birmingham for the final two days of its 294-day Commonwealth-wide journey.

On Wednesday 27 July, the Baton will begin its visit, taking in all ten of the city’s Parliamentary constituencies and will be carried by hundreds of local community heroes who will take on the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be Batonbearers.

People in all of the city’s neighbourhoods will only be a short distance from a part of the route and are being warmly welcomed to check out the schedule (detailed below) and plan where they want to cheer the Baton as it makes its way through Birmingham.

There will be a location not too far away from where everyone lives or works, so people are encouraged to support their most local Batonbearers or use public transport or active travel options wherever possible to view this historic journey.Arriving in Birmingham on Wednesday 27 July, the Baton will begin its tour of the city at the Botanical Gardens, which opened in 1832 and remains one of the city’s biggest attractions to this day.

As a stunning backdrop to kick off proceedings, the venue will showcase species/flowers from all Commonwealth countries/nations.It will then take in several parks and open spaces as well as locations such as the iconic Old Joe clocktower at the University of Birmingham (the Games Venue for Squash and Hockey), Sarehole Mill (which inspired the literary works of Tolkien), Birmingham City FC’s St Andrew’s stadium and the Balti Triangle (home to Birmingham’s signature curry dish).During the stops at parks there will be special community celebrations including at Cotteridge Park (9am to 1pm), Swanshurst Park (11am to 3pm) and Small Heath Park (2pm to 5pm), with all welcome to attend.

Later on during the first day in Birmingham, it will arrive at the Gay Village (where drag queens and Chinese dragons will be amongst the welcoming committee) and Gas Street Basin (where Dragonboats with drummers will follow the Baton down the Canal), before a journey down Broad Street aboard the West Midlands Metro, before ending the day in the heart of the city centre in Victoria Square – where a “homecoming” celebration event, open to the public, will be staged that evening from 5pm-9pm.

The following morning, Thursday 28 July, will see the final day of the relay start at Birmingham Children’s Hospital (celebrating the efforts of the NHS locally, and giving young patients a chance to see the Baton as it makes its way through wards and corridors).

It will then weave its way through a number of neighbourhoods taking in more parks and open spaces as well as the likes of the Jewellery Quarter (where the efforts of those behind the creation of the Baton and the Games medals will be recognised).

Later on it will pass landmarks including Handsworth Library and the Nishkam Centre on the Soho Road, Sutton Coldfield town centre, a community celebration at Pype Hayes Park (due to run from 11am to 3pm) and Aston Villa FC’s home Villa Park (where the Relay will go up and down the iconic Holte End steps).

The long journey then ends at Aston Hall – which will be the scene of a family fun event from 12pm to 4pm featuring historical interpreters, including King Charles I and Queen Victoria (in costume) along with an opportunity to have a go at a diverse range of activities including lawn bowls, jousting, welly tossing, egg and spoon races, archery, and crafting.

The Baton will then be taken into the Alexander Stadium that evening as part of the Opening Ceremony for the Games.

During the ceremony, the Baton will be opened – and The Queen’s personal message to the Commonwealth, inserted when the relay began at Buckingham Palace on 7 October 2021, then read out.Cllr Ian Ward, Leader of Birmingham City Council, said: “The four-and-a-half years of planning and preparation for Birmingham 2022, the biggest event to ever be staged in our great city’s history, are now turning into reality.

“The Commonwealth Games are well and truly upon us – and the Queen’s Baton Relay coming to our city is the moment for everyone, wherever they are in Birmingham to get the party and the celebrations started.

“There are so many wonderful locations from which to enjoy this special occasion and cheer on the many inspirational Batonbearers, who have done so much for our city. I can’t wait to see these two days unfold across Birmingham, demonstrating how bold and welcoming we really are.”

The Birmingham Baton route has been shaped following a year of planning and preparation including engagement with all political groups on the city council and West Midlands Police. Also involved was the council’s own Commonwealth Games and Physical Activity Overview and Scrutiny Committee, whose then-Chair Cllr Mariam Khan played a key role in suggesting ways in which the emerging proposals could be refined to ensure more communities and groups were represented via the final route taken by the relay.

To ensure the safe and smooth journey of the Baton and Batonbearers through the city, some local roads will be closed for a brief amount time. The earliest roads will be closed from to accommodate the start of the travelling event, will be 8am, and the latest time to accommodate the end of the event, will be 7pm on day one and 3:30pm on day two.It is expected that roads on the route will be closed for no longer than two hours and most likely will reopen after 30 minutes.

The stewards on the ground on the day will work safely and quickly to get roads reopen as soon as the convoy passes through.Temporary parking suspensions will be place in some key locations to allow the convoy to arrive and depart sa

U-Turn: Prosper Ogum Narteh hasn’t resigned as Kotoko coach; Board of Directors insist

The highest decision making body in Asante Kotoko has rejected reports that the club’s head coach has tendered in his resignation letter

Asante Kotoko board of directors have debunked reports that head coach Prosper Ogum Narteh has resigned from the club.

On Wednesday, reports were wild that Ogum opted to part ways with the club just after ten months in charge.

Kotoko’s management member Emmanuel Newton Dasoberi also confirmed the news in an interview with Daily Graphic, insisting that the coach took the decision following a disagreement with the board on player recruitment.

“During the meeting with the board to discuss his report to the management, there was a disagreement over his request to sack 10 players and recruit 17 new players, including four centre-backs,” explained Emmanuel Newton Dasoberi, the Administration and Operations Manager of Kotoko.

“It was at the point when some members of the board questioned the justification of some of his requests that Coach Prosper Ogum said he had a two-year contract but wanted to move on with his life, so the club must look for a new coach.

“The coach has not formally written to the club about his resignation, but even when some members tried to persuade him to change his mind, his response was that his decision was final,” he added.

But the board has vehemently denied any thing of that sort and has advised the general public to disregard the information.

Ogum guided Kotoko to win 2021/22 Ghana Premier League title and he is now expected to lead them to play in next season’s Caf Champions League

Exclusive: Asante Kotoko close in on C.K Akonnor to replace Prosper Ogum as new coach

The Porcupine Warriors will likely re-engage their former coach following the resignation of Prosper Ogum Narteh and hope that he will be able to lead the team to glory next season

Former Ghana coach C.K Akonnor will likely travel to Kumasi in the coming days to complete his appointment as Asante Kotoko’s new manager, AshesGyamera.com can report.

The former Ashanti Gold and Hearts of Oak head coach will replace Prosper Ogum Narteh at Baba Yara Sports Stadium and hopes to lead the club to glory in the upcoming season.

Ogum opted to call it a quit on Wednesday following a crunch meeting with Kotoko’s top hierarchy where he insisted that he wasn’t happy with the decision to sell some key players and also suggested that ten players must be offloaded while 17 new ones come in.

“The coach has not formally written to the club about his resignation, but even when some members tried to persuade him to change his mind, his response was that his decision was final,” Dasoberi added.

Meanwhile, Akonnor will likely sign an 18-month contract, with the option for a further year, if Kotoko’s board agrees to management’s choice, and he will be back in coaching after his sack from Ghana’s national team.

Akonnor led Kotoko to the group stage of the Caf Confederation Cup in 2019.

Inside story: Ten players should be sacked & 17 in; Why Asante Kotoko coach Prosper Ogum resigned

The management of Kumasi Asante Kotoko are faced with looking for a new head coach following the resignation on Wednesday of their head coach, Prosper Narteh Ogum, after a meeting with the club’s management and the Technical Committee of the Board of Directors in Kumasi

Ogum’s surprise resignation came just five weeks after he led Kotoko to win a record extending 24th Ghana Premier League title, with a colourful coronation taking place in their final home match against Elmina Sharks at the Baba Yara Stadium on June 12.

The Daily Graphic understands that the Coach’s decision to unilaterally end his contract with the Porcupine Warriors after only one season came as a surprise to both the club’s management members and the board following disagreement over the recruitment of players for the forthcoming season.

An official of Kotoko denied that the coach terminated his GH¢26,500-a-month contract over salary arrears and other conditions of service.

An assistant coach of the home-based senior national team, Black Galaxies, 44-year-old Ogum was Kotoko’s 13th substantive coach in the last decade.

Review meeting

Insiders revealed to the Daily Graphic that the meeting was called to review the club’s performance and also discuss matters including player recruitment, the youth teams and their upcoming campaign in the CAF Champions League.

However, there was some disagreement over a request to recruit 17 new players and sack 10 over poor performance, which reportedly upset the coach who subsequently stepped down as head of the technical team.

Kotoko coach waves

Au revoir: Coach Prosper Narteh Ogum told his employers at the meeting that his decision to quit was final

“During the meeting with the board to discuss his report to the management, there was a disagreement over his request to sack 10 players and recruit 17 new players, including four centre-backs.

“It was at the point when some members of the board questioned the justification of some of his requests that Coach Prosper Ogum said he had a two-year contract but wanted to move on with his life, so the club must look for a new coach,” explained Emmanuel Newton Dasoberi, the Administration and Operations Manager of Kotoko.

Dispute

At the meeting, some board and management members reportedly questioned the prudence in employing 17 new players when he demanded the recruitment of a similar number of players when he joined Kotoko from West African Football Academy (WAFA) at the beginning of the season.

The Daily Graphic has learnt that some board members are hoping to meet Coach Ogum in the coming days to talk him out of his resignation after failed attempts at yesterday’s meeting to get him to rescind his decision.

“The coach has not formally written to the club about his resignation, but even when some members tried to persuade him to change his mind, his response was that his decision was final,” Mr Dasoberi told the Daily Graphic

Meanwhile, AshesGyamera.com understand that Kotoko could re-engage former coach C.K Akonnor to replace Ogum in the coming days.
