Sanchez stars on Man United debut as Red Devils thrash Yeovil

The January signing from Arsenal made an instant impact on his debut, at Yeovil, teeing up two goals in a positive 72-minute display

He is only one game into his Manchester United career but Alexis Sanchez has already begun to whet the appetites of his new supporters.

The 4-0 FA Cup win over Yeovil Town on Friday presented all the hallmarks of a nightmare debut, but the Chilean instead was the star man in a sometimes shaky but ultimately professional performance by the Red Devils.

The bobbly pitch did nothing for Sanchez’s trademark busy running style, while the Yeovil fans did their best to get on his back from minute one, optimistically labelling him “a waste of money” early on, but he took it all in his stride in a 72-minute display which promised far more to come when he finds himself in more favourable surroundings.

It was Sanchez’s name on everybody’s lips in the run-up to the match, with Jose Mourinho sticking to his promise that the new £35 million man would get some game time at Huish Park, choosing him on the left of the attacking midfield line behind Marcus Rashford in the lone striker’s role. But United took some time to get into their rhythm as the Portuguese made a total of 10 changes to his starting line-up, resulting in more than a few scary moments in their own territory.

Yet whenever they got the ball to Sanchez, it appeared that something positive was on the cards. When he wasn’t coaxing Yeovil defenders into dangerous challenges, he was giving his team-mates a preview of what is to come playing alongside the former Arsenal man.

Both Rashford and Scott McTominay had been played into decent shooting positions by Sanchez long before the former opened the scoring shortly before half-time. Sanchez nudged the ball centrally for Rashford and, after the England man had seemingly lost the ball, full-back Tom James took too long considering his options, allowing Rashford to slot past Artur Krysiak.

United went for the jugular after the break and deserved their second goal when it arrived. Once again, Sanchez was prevalent, taking Juan Mata’s pass and running at the retreating Yeovil back line before playing a neat reverse ball wide for Ander Herrera to fire confidently home.

Mourinho eventually called Sanchez’s participation to a close shortly after the attacker had been on the wrong end of another meaty challenge in which the ball had been little more than an innocent bystander. The decision to protect the Chilean ahead of Wednesday’s trip to Wembley to face Tottenham was a wise one to say the least.

Alexis Sanchez Manchester United

Marcus Rashford Manchester United

Ander Herrera Manchester United

On the whole, this was exactly the kind of performance United fans could have expected from their side. They were not always secure at the back as their much-changed side was put under pressure by the more physical approach of the lower-league outfit. In the end, though, they won with something to spare.

There was time for two more goals after Sanchez’s exit, with Jesse Lingard going on a solo run and shooting low past Krysiak only seconds after 17-year-old Angel Gomes had almost done exactly the same from the other flank. In the final minute of injury time, Marcos Rojo went on a rare foray forward to tee up Romelu Lukaku for another.

It has not been a bad week for Jose Mourinho. He turned 55 on Friday, signed a new contract extension, signalled his 100th game in charge of United with a 4-0 win and watched his side extend their 2018 record to five wins from five with 12 goals scored and none conceded.

Moreover, he has added a wonderful weapon to his side’s armoury. And Alexis Sanchez’s performance at Yeovil is only the taster of what he could be capable of achieving in a United shirt.

Bawumia expected in Ghana next week after recovering from ‘stroke’

The Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu has said Ghanaians should expect Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia back in a week time.

Dr. Bawumia left Ghana to the United Kingdom (UK) Friday, January 19 for advanced medical attention after reporting of ill health.

A statement signed by the Chief Of Staff, Frema Opare Saturday, January 20 said he was flown to the UK on the advice of his doctors.

Speaking to Starr News’ Parliamentary Correspondent Ibrahim Alhassan Friday Mr Mensah-Bonsu stressed government’s position that Vice President is doing well and should be in the country in a week time.

“The Vice President really, I’ll tell you that he is okay. But, he has been asked to rest a bit. You know Ghanaians if he should come now, so many people will be trooping to his house and thus he wouldn’t have time to rest,” he told Ibrahim adding “which is why I think the doctors decided that [he should] continue to rest a bit for at least one more week or so before coming.”

Mr. Mensah-Bonsu also confirmed disclosure by Legal practitioner and influential figure in the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko that the Vice President was not on admission at a health facility in the UK contradicting social media reports.

“No. No I mean it [his condition] is not a hospital condition I will tell you,” he told Alhassan in reply to a question regarding the social media claims.

West Ham reject Swansea’s offer for Ayew, Carvalhal told to improve bid

The Hammers boss has advised the Welsh club to improve their bid for the Ghana international

West Ham United manager David Moyes has insisted that Swansea City must improve their offer for Ghana midfielder Andre Ayew in order to trigger a move.

The 28-year-old joined the Hammers in 2016 from Swansea for a club record fee of €24 million but due to injuries he has been unable to replicate the form that prompted the London-based club to break the bank for his services.

He has made 18 league appearances this season including nine starts, scoring three goals.

Swansea boss Carlos Carvalhal wants him back at Liberty Stadium to join their fight to beat the drop.

The Swans currently sit bottom on the log with 20 points, three points below safety.

“I never said we want anyone to go. If someone comes up we will look at it but as far as I am concerned, no-one is going,” Moyes was quoted as saying by Tribal Football.

“I think there has been an offer [for Andre Ayew] but we wouldn’t accept the current bid as it is,” he added.

Andre Ayew could reunite with younger brother Jordan at Swansea if a deal is eventually struck.

Alexis Sanchez makes Manchester United debut at Yeovil

The new signing will make his bow in the Manchester United shirt in the FA Cup fourth-round clash at Huish Park on Friday

Alexis Sanchez will make his Manchester United debut on Friday after being named in the starting line-up for the FA Cup fourth-round fixture against Yeovil Town.

The Chilean looks set to play on the left of the attacking midfield line for Jose Mourinho’s side, with Marcus Rashford named up front and Scott McTominay in the No.10 role as United make 10 changes from the side which beat Burnley 1-0 on Saturday.

Only Juan Mata survives from the starting XI at Turf Moor, while the start for Sanchez marks his first appearance in 23 days, having played his final game for Arsenal in the 2-2 draw with Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium on January 3.

Club skipper Michael Carrick makes his return after four months out with a heart complaint, taking his place alongside Ander Herrera in the centre of midfield.

There is also a spot on the bench for 17-year-old Angel Gomes, whose only previous appearance for the first-team came as a last-minute substitute in the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on the final weekend of the 2016-17 Premier League season.

Yeovil Town XI: Krysiak; James, Sowunmi, N. Smith, Dickson; Gray, Wing, Bird, Green; Zoko (c), Surridge

Subs: Maddison, Whelan, C. Smith, Gobern, Santos, Browne, Fisher.

Man Utd XI: Romero; Darmian, Lindelof, Rojo, Shaw; Carrick (c), Herrera; Mata, McTominay, Sanchez; Rashford.

Subs: J. Pereira, Smalling, Young, Gomes, Lingard, Mata, Lukaku.

Philadelphia Union captain Bedoya happy to play with Accam again

Philadelphia Union skipper Alejandro Bedoya believes the club’s acquisition of former teammate David Accam will help the side mount a stronger challenge in Major League Soccer.

The Ghana international, last week, completed a three-year move from Chicago Fire, joining as a designated player in exchange for a total of $1.2 million in allocation money.

Bedoya and Accam played together between 2012 and 2013 during their time with Swedish club Helsingborg.

“I’m looking forward to the season to start, seeing some new faces, reuniting with my old teammate David Accam who’s going to give us a new look,” said Bedoya, as reported by his club’s official website.

“I know when the other team looks at our team sheet and sees him on the field, they’re going to be wary of him and put him on their back foot.

“Hopefully, with high pressing, we can turn a ball over high and get guys like Fafa [Picault] and David on the run on the counter and cause some damage to the other team’s defence.”

Accam has become a ‘big figure’ in MSL since joining Fire from Helsingborgs in 2015.

In all, he made 79 league appearances for the Men in Red, netting 33 times and registering 15 assists.

Aside from finishing his first two seasons as the club’s top scorer, he was also successively adjudged Fire’s Most Valuable Player.

Piers Morgan invites USA president Trump to become Arsenal coach

The TV personality presented the U.S. president with an Arsenal jersey during a recent interview and asked if he’d like to take Arsene Wenger’s job

Piers Morgan has taken the #WengerOut campaign to new lengths.

The TV personality and famed Arsenal supporter presented Donald Trump with a Gunners jersey during a recent interview, asking if the U.S. president would be willing to take over as manager at the Emirates Stadium.

Tweeting a picture of himself gifting Trump the No. 45 shirt, Morgan wrote: “The moment I invite President Trump to be Arsenal’s new manager – because he’d build a strong defensive wall, have an attacking philosophy & want to win big trophies at all costs. See his hilarious response on Sunday night, ITV, 10pm.”

In a follow-up tweet, Morgan added: “It would be a high risk appointment, admittedly…”

There may already be an Arsenal fan in the Trump family: His youngest son, Barron, was photographed during the White House Easter Egg Roll in April wearing a Gunners kit. Barron Trump also is a member of D.C. United’s academy, having played for the club’s Under-12 side.

“*WORLD EXCLUSIVE*
The moment I invite President Trump to be Arsenal’s new manager – because he’d build a strong defensive wall, have an attacking philosophy & want to win big trophies at all costs.
See his hilarious response on Sunday night, ITV, 10pm.

The president also has some history in the sport, having played varsity soccer at the New York Military Academy in the 1960s and helped conduct a League Cup draw in 1992.

U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati has said Trump is a supporter of the unified USA-Mexico-Canada bid to host the 2026 World Cup, though Gulati recently indicated the president’s policies are complicating that proposal.

Arsenal, meanwhile, sit sixth in the Premier League and earlier this month were eliminated in their FA Cup opener for the first time since Arsene Wenger took over in 1996.

The embattled manager did get a boost, however, as the Gunners secured a 2-1 aggregate win over Chelsea on Wednesday to advance to the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City.

Gyan: I’m the most dedicated Ghanaian player ever

The striker has launched a fresh attack on his critics insisting that he has always been dedicated to the national team

Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan has denied reports that he has been using ‘juju’ against his teammates, reiterating that he deserves to be the captain of the senior national team following recent concerns raised by a section of Ghanaians, including former teammate Prince Tagoe.

The 31-year-old, who currently plies his trade with Turkish Super Lig side Kayserispor, believes he has been dedicated to the course of Ghana since 2003 and that God repaid his efforts with the captaincy.

“I’ve done a lot for Ghana and I’m always dedicated. There is no player in the country’s history who has been more dedicated than me,” said Gyan.

“I didn’t go to any coach or football association member’s house to lobby for the captaincy. It was a gift from God for my dedication and hard work.

”A player will say he is not progressing because his teammate cast a spell or used Juju (black magic) [on him] but that player should ask himself if he has more qualities than whoever he is accusing.

”For example, if I want to do something [use black magic] on somebody then that person should be higher than me not someone who’s not at my level and currently without a club.”

He added: “When my parents were selling maize in the Kaneshie Market to support me, nobody said it was Juju. When I used to jog Dansoman to Mallam Junction to train, nobody said I used juju. Today some hater sits and concludes that I used juju to achieve things in life.”

Gyan also insisted that such claims and reports will not distract him.

”Many people think I will be distracted when they accuse me but I’m more focused. You cannot distract me and you cannot destroy the job God has given me to do and make a living from.”

Gyan, who is Ghana’s all-time topscorer with 51 goals, succeeded John Mensah as the Black Stars captain in 2012.

Baba Rahman joins Schalke 04 until 2019

The Ghanaian has completed an 18-month loan switch to the Bundesliga side after recovering from his anterior cruciate ligament.

Ghana defender Abdul Baba Rahman has joined German side Schalke 04 in a one-and-half-year loan deal from Chelsea.

The 23-year-old who recovered from a knee injury he sustained in January 2017 while on national duties with Ghana during the Afcon, arrived at the Veltins-Arena on Thursday and passed his medical on Friday afternoon.

Baba was linked with a loan move to Premier League sides Everton and Newcastle United as well as Turkish outfits Galatasaray and Fenerbahce but he opted to return to German after he was promised more playing time by Domenico Tedesco.

With Kenedy joining Newcastle on loan last week, Chelsea boss Antonio Conte was left with only one Marcos Alonso as the only left-back option but with Emerson Palmieri likely to join the English champions from Serie A side A.S Roma, Baba opted to leave for Schalke.

The former Augsberg star initially joined Schalke in a loan deal during the 2016-17 season and made 21 appearances for the German side, scoring one goal and providing one assist in the process.
