Essien backs Thomas Partey to succeed Gyan as new Ghana captain

The former Ghana international believes the Atletico Madrid star can step into the shoes of Asamoah Gyan as the Black Stars skipper

Former Ghana midfielder Michael Essien claims Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Teye Partey has the potentials to succeed Asamoah Gyan as Black Stars captain.

The 24-year-old has been acting as captain in the interim since last year, following injuries to Gyan and Andre Ayew, who recently joined Turkish club Fenerbahce.

Under Partey’s captaincy Ghana have played five games without any defeat.

According to Essien, Party can fill the void once coach Kwesi Appiah officially declares the roll vacant.

“There are good players in the national team but I think Thomas Partey is doing great and he can lead the team [if Asamoah Gyan retires],” Essien told TV3.

“He is doing wonderful things with his club and the national team as well. He has captained the national team on few occasions and I think he will be a good leader,” he added.

Essien, who boasts of 58 international caps with the Black Stars, was tipped to lead the national team after Stephen Appiah retired but injuries hindered his chances.

Preview: AS Vita Club vs Aduana Stars: Kenichi eyes double over Congolese giants

The pressure is mounting on the Black Dolphins to take revenge after suffering their first loss in the group stage at the hands of the visitors

Florent Ibenge’s AS Vita Club face Ghana Premier League champions Aduana Stars in Kinshasa in the second leg of Caf Confederation Cup Group A fixture on Sunday, having lost 2-1 in the first game in Dormaa Ahenkro.

After occupying the top spot since matchday one, Vita have now dropped two places down midway, but have two home games, including Aduana’s visit to make amends in their run to the round of 16. With their impeccable home record after four games, there is still hope.

However, a section of the club’s supporters have started asking questions about the tactics of their coach, despite winning the local top-flight few days ago, and he has promised an improved performance for Sunday’s clash.

“We’ll make amends and hopefully go top or second after Sunday,” Ibenge said.

“We gave a good account of ourselves in the first leg but Aduana were lucky to have won the game. We’ll do our best and do things right too so that they can’t run away with even a point.

“The supporters are agitating for a win and it’s in the right direction. If we drop points on Sunday, our chances of qualifying will be further limited,” he added.

Aduana, on the other hand, have their own issues. They have been partly inactive and last played an away game almost eight weeks ago following the suspension on the top-flight by government.

They left for DR Congo with 15 players instead of 23 due to financial difficulties. Again, in Caf’s inter-club competitions, they have failed to pick a single point away and woefully conceded eight goals in their last three games.

However, it may be too early to predict Sunday’s outcome since the club is now under the guidance of a new coach Kenichi Yatsuhashi, who took over from Yussif Abubakar a fortnight ago.

The Japanese breathed life back into the Fire Club’s poor campaign thanks to a home victory over Vita in the first leg. He also believes he can repeat that feat in Kinshasa.

“I promise that we will bring the three points back to Ghana,” Kenichi told reporters in Accra, before departure.

“We have done everything possible, including change of captaincy, to bring the three points back. Many of our supporters won’t be able to make the journey but as they are supporting us and demanding the results, our players are pushing themselves to the best and we will bring the three points back,” he added.

In Casablanca, table toppers Raja will square off with Ivorian giants Asec Mimosas in the other game, after picking an all-important victory in Abidjan last week.

Andre Ayew joins Fenerbahce on loan from Swansea City

The Ghana midfielder has completed a loan move to the Turkish top-flight after failing to help them avoid relegation

Ghana midfielder Andre Ayew has agreed a season-long loan move to Turkish Super Lig side Fenerbache from Swansea City, both clubs have confirmed.

The 28-year-old, who joined West Ham United in a record transfer fee of £20.5 million from Swansea in 2016, suffered a hamstring injury on his debut game against Chelsea and later returned to the Welsh side after falling down the pecking order in David Moyes’ setup and has signed a season-long loan deal with an option to make the deal a permanent one.

“Ayew today left the Swans’ pre-season tour in Austria to travel to Turkey for a medical ahead of his move to the Super Lig, which will be completed subject to international clearance,” a club’s statement read.

“The Turkish giants will also have the option to purchase Ayew on a permanent deal at the end of his loan spell,” the statement added.

Swansea coach Graham Potter, who recently replaced Carlos Calvahal, lauded Ayew’s attitude during pre-season.
“I understand the circumstances of the move – it’s part of the restructure of us going forward,” he said.

“From my perspective, he has been brilliant. He has applied himself in training, supported what we are trying to do and been very professional.
“He has been a joy to work with and we wish him the best,” he added.

Ayew becomes the latest Ghanaian to don the jersey of Fenerbahce after former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah and Sam ‘Foyoo’ Johnson.

Essien broods on ‘shambolic state’ of Ghana football

The midfielder insists that the current state of football in the country is shameful
Ghana midfielder Michael Essien says football is currently in a terrible state in the country.

This comes after all activities related to football were put on hold by government following an investigation by undercover journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas in June, which exposed corrupt practices by football administrators and referees.

“It’s a very sad and a shameful situation [with regards to] what is happening to football in Ghana,” Essien said.

“Now, we just have to look forward and resolve the shambolic situation the Football Association finds itself in and hopefully they can get back to work and give these local players the chance to play.

“That is what they do for a living and now they are doing nothing which is quite hard for them. I hope they can resolve the issue for them to get back to work as soon as possible,” he added.

Essien, who has obtained a Uefa B coaching license, is currently on holidays in Ghana after parting ways with Indonesian top-flight Persib Bandung.

Atsu eyes improved performance with Newcastle United in Premier League

The Magpies midfielder is raring to get on the pitch after recovering from knee injury

Newcastle United midfielder Christian Atsu is brimming with confidence ahead of the 2017-18 Premier League season which kicks off next month.

The 26-year-old went under the knife in April following a knee injury sustained while playing against Leicester City. He believes he’s now fully fit to fight for a starting role and improve his records in Rafael Benitez’s squad.

“I’m feeling more confident by the day and I just want to work hard now and prepare for the start of the season,” the former Chelsea winger told The Chroniclelive .

“It’s going to be a big challenge for all of us but we are all looking forward to it. This season, I’m determined to be better than my first two seasons at Newcastle,” he said.

“It starts in the friendly games and it goes right up to the Premier League kick-off. This season, there is going to be a lot of competition for first-team places that’s why I am very happy to get surgery out of the way.

“It means I am back and able to stake my claim for a first-team place. I feel I can compete with anybody that’s in the side,” he added.

Atsu has been looking very sharp in Newcastle’s pre-season, grabbing the match-winner in the friendly against St Partick’s.

“It felt great to be playing a game again and also getting on the scoresheet – and I’m very happy,” he said.

“After surgery, I have been able to get back quickly and be involved in pre-season. I was worried about the possibility of missing pre-season.

“It’s very important for the whole season so I am pleased to be back and mark it with a goal,” he added.

Last season, Atsu made 28 league appearances and scored two goals.

Nyantakyi will become Fifa president after he’s exonerated, says Kojo Yankah

The Western region football chief believes his former boss will eventually return to football administration

Ghana FA executive committee member Kojo Yankah has insisted that former Fifa Council member Kwesi Nyantakyi will be cleared of all charges levelled against him.
Nyantakyi was caught on camera accepting gifts in a documentary titled ‘Number 12’ produced by Ghanaian undercover journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

The acceptance of gifts by football officials and administrators flouts the rules and regulations of the world’s football governing body.

The former Ghana FA president, who was also serving as Caf’s first vice president, has been handed a 90-day ban from all football-related activities. He has resigned from all positions previously held.
However, Yankah believes his former boss will ascend to the highest office in football once exonerated.

“I’m still solidly behind Kwesi Nyantakyi because I know he’s clean. I swear that Kwesi Nyantakyi will come back to football administration stronger in the future,” Yankah told Hello FM .

“He will come back and will even become very influential than he was in the past. Mark my words that after he is exonerated from all the charges levelled against him, he will become GFA president again and then win an election to become Fifa president,” he added.

Nyantakyi reigned as GFA boss between December 2005 and June 2018 and was even planning to seek reelection in 2019, according to reports.

Aduana Stars can’t survive in Kinshasa, says Vita Club coach Ibenge

The Black Dolphins boss has congratulated the Fire Club following their victory but believes a sweet revenge is underway

Vita Club coach Jean-Florent Ibenge believes Aduana Stars will be defeated when both sides meet in the Caf Confederation Cup Group A return leg in Kinshasa on July 29.

The Fire Club defeated the DR Congo champions 2-1 in Ghana on Wednesday thanks to goals from Bright Adjei and Yahaya Mohammed.

“It was not a bad game against Aduana but the results won’t help our course. Anyway, congratulations to Aduana,” Ibenge said, as quoted by AshesGyamera.com.

“We came into the game early and wanted to win but it was a little difficult. We’re going back to work hard and win the return leg.

“We need the three points badly in Kinshasa and we must work towards it right from today. I don’t think Aduana can survive there like they did at their home ground,” he added.

Ahead of the game, Vita Club were leaders of the group but have dropped two places with Raja Casablanca now the new leaders following an away win over Asec Mimosas of Cote D’Ivoire.

Kenichi confirms Aduana striker Sasraku’s suspension

The Fire Club’s coach has cleared the air on why the striker was not part of the squad that played against Vita Club on Wednesday

Aduana Stars coach Kenichi Yatsuhashi has confirmed the suspension of striker Derrick Sasraku following acts of indiscipline during training session.

Prior to the Fire Club’s game against AS Vita Club in the Caf Confederation Cup on Wednesday, reports suggested that the Japanese coach had expelled the striker from camp following a training ground bust-up with assistant coach Tandoh.

It was earlier reported that Sasraku, who had a fight with teammate Elvis Opoku four months ago, had threatened to descend on the assistant coach following a brief altercation.

Although, the club’s communication director Evans Oppong initially denied the incident, Kenichi believes his decision to suspend the striker was the best option.
“On Derrick Sasraku’s issue, I have suspended him and that decision is for a reason,” Kenichi told Kumasi-based Silver FM.

“I think there’s nothing more that I can say about him for now. As a coach, I think there’s no certain rules I have set for players in any team that I have managed but I just provide an example for being a disciplined and hard working coach,” he added.

According to Goal ‘s sources, Sasraku is likely to be slapped with an indefinite ban and will forfeit at least three months salary.

Udinese agree four-year deal with Nicholas Opoku

The Black Stars defender is on the verge of joining the Little Zebras in Serie A

Udinese have agreed to bring Ghana and Club Africain defender Nicholas Opoku to Dacia Arena this summer, Goal understands.

The Little Zebras are expected to pay close to £1.5 million to acquire the former Berekum Chelsea star, following a verbal agreement for a four-year deal.

The 20-year-old was close to joining FC Basel in January but Club Africain pulled out of the talks after the Swiss side proposed to pay the agreed price in installments.

“It’s almost a done deal for Nicholas Opoku to join Udinese. The official announcement may be done in the coming days after both parties agreed the terms involved,” a source close to player told Goal .

“The deal with Basel which fell through at the eleventh hour in January almost affected him but he has a strong character.

“I believe this opportunity will make him happy and expose him to bigger opportunities in the future since he is a top talent with lots of prospects,” the source added.

Opoku boasts of two international appearances with Ghana after making his bow against United States in 2017 in an international friendly when he replaced Rashid Sumaila.

Aston Villa coach Bruce hints at Albert Adomah’s exit

The Claret & Blue Army’s boss says the club will likely lose some top players ahead of the new campaign

Aston Villa coach Steve Bruce has admitted that the club is likely to lose Ghana midfielder Albert Adomah and other stars ahead of next season.

The Claret & Blue Army are reportedly in need of £40-45million before they can meet Uefa’s Financial Fair Play regulations, leading to concerns over the future of 30-year-old Adomah, who has been linked to Newcastle United.

“I’ve accepted it and committed myself to the cause, and I think it’s better to be open and honest with the supporters and say how it is,” Bruce told Sky Sports News.

“We don’t want to lose Grealish, Adomah, Kodjia and Chester, but the inevitability is that we might have to, so let’s get ready for it.

“We have to keep the club up and running and keep it in line with Financial Fair Play. We might have to take decisions which aren’t going to be easy. We will have to generate some money and inevitably that’s going to be through player sales,” he said.

“And it’s going to be people who I don’t want to sell. Jack is the obvious one that clubs are going to look at. You don’t want to lose him but the inevitable thing is, we have to.

“People will know we’ve got financial problems and they’ll sit and wait until deadline day possibly. I hope that doesn’t happen but we’ve got to wait for it.

“It’s pretty brutal stuff out there. There’s nobody going to feel sorry for Aston Villa because financially we’ve got ourselves into a bit of a pickle. We’re having a tough time at the moment but we’ve got to try and steer our way through it and ride the storm,” he added.

Although, Adomah Villa couldn’t qualify to the Premier League after losing the playoffs to Fulham, Adomah ended as the topscorer last season after scoring 14 goals in 32 appearances.

He was also voted as the club’s Players’ player of the Year.
