I’m one of the ‘luckiest’ local coaches to handle Ghana, says Kwesi Appiah

The former Black Stars gaffer says he has been fortunate to have had the opportunity to lead the national team on two occasions

Former Ghana coach James Kwasi Appiah has admitted that he is one of the few former players to have had the opportunity to handle the country’s senior national team.

The 58-year-old has managed the Black Stars on two occasions between 2012 and 2014 as well as 2017 and 2019, becoming the only indigenous coach to qualify Ghana to Fifa World Cup in 2014.

Although, Appiah’s contract was not renewed by the new Ghana FA and his former assistant C.K Akonnor has taken over the mantle, he believes he had the best of support from Ghanaians.

“I always keep saying that I’m not even the best coach in Ghana. There maybe other coaches who also good but have not gotten the opportunities I have had. I must also admit that I was very lucky to coach the Black Stars. I say this because I started playing football with many people but I’m the only person to have this opportunity,” Appiah told Otec FM ahead of the launch of his book ‘Leaders don’t have to yell.’

“I was given enough support to succeed and I believe few coaches had this kind of situation so obviously it is not out of order to say I was lucky. The players gave me their respect and support even though some of them were super rich with millions of dollars in their accounts.

“I believe that it is a good beginning and every local coach needs the support of Ghanaians just like I had so that as a country, we can achieve success with our national teams,” he added.

AshesGyamera.com understands that Appiah has opened talks with Sudan and Libya to become the head coach of their national team.

Ashanti Gold saw their impressive start to the season brought to a halt after losing 1-0 at home to Berekum Chelsea at the Len Clay Sports Stadium in Obuasi on Saturday.

A howler from goalkeeper Frank Boateng gave former goal King Kofi Owusu the opportunity to score his second goal of the season since he also scored the only goal last weekend when Chelsea pipped Asante Kotoko at home.

The victory against Ashanti Gold means that Chelsea have now won all their three away games and are yet to also concede a goal in five games.

Quartey ready to shine as Ebusua Dwarfs new coach; insists he’s spiritually fortified

The Mysterious Club’s new boss has enjoyed a productive spell in amateur football but remains determined to prove his worth in top-flight as he marks his debut

Ernest Thompson Quartey remains determined to prove himself as “a top-flight coach” following his appointment as new coach of Ghana Premier  League side Ebusua Dwarfs.

The Cape Coast-based club saw their former boss Joseph Assibu Raymond tendering in his resignation letter after only four games into the season and they have tasked Quartey who is making his bow in the top-flight to change their fortunes.

“It is true I’m the new coach of Ebusua Dwarfs and I’m ready to prove a point in the top-flight,” Quartey told Otec FM.

“Although, I acquired my coaching license together with Kwasi Appiah and many others years ago, I’ve been working on the quite but people very close to me know I actually have what it takes to do the job.

“When you even ask about me from Elmina Sharks coaches [which includes Felix Aboagye and Yaw Acheampong], they will tell you the caliber of coach Dwarfs have signed to manage them.

“I think Ghanaians shouldn’t be surprised because are a lot of new and unsung coaches in this season’s league so it’s time for me to come into the limelight and help Dwarfs especially in this crying time. I live in Central region and knows whatever is going on in and around the club so as a Christian, I always pray for directions therefore I’m spiritually fortified for the challenge,” he added.

Quartey faces a daunting task on his debut as Dwarfs, who have lost four games on the bounce, travel to Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi to battle Asante Kotoko on matchday five on Sunday.

However, he can take solace from the fact that the game will be played behind closed doors as Kotoko begin to serve their punishment merited out to them by Ghana FA due to their supporters’ misbehaviour against Berekum Chelsea.

Goalkeeping crisis hit King Faisal after only four games in Ghana Premier League

The Green and White are struggling to hit the ground running following their return to the top-flight

King Faisal have had a poor start to the Ghana Premier League  season, picking only a point after four games as they look certain to be one of the candidates which will struggle to keep their heads up after the campaign.

Interestingly, the Kumasi-based club have already used four goalkeepers and shipped in nine goals as against three scored after matchday four.

On opening day against Dreams FC in Dawu, Faisal started with Domfeh Alexander in post when they suffered a 4-1 thrashing. Former Asante Kotoko shot-stopper Kaisan Yuisu took over in the second game against Ashanti Gold as they also lost 1-0 at home.

Yuisu, howeve,  picked up an injury in the process and that meant that third-choice goalkeeper Mustapha Bampoe was the last resort before their trip to Dormaa Ahenkro in the game against Aduana Stars with no proper back up.

Despite an improved performance against the former champions, Faisal lost 2-1 to Aduana and they had to enter the market for another goalkeeper especially when negotiations with former Ghana international Stephen Adams had fell through.

Luckily for them, Moro Yussif was ready to join and they picked him up in Berekum on their way back to Kumasi. It took Yussif barely 48 hours to make his bow.

With Faisal leading Bechem United 2-1 on Wednesday, goalkeeper Bampoe suffered an injury and was replaced by Yussif but the former Berekum Chelsea star conceded the equaliser with the first attempt he faced.

As they prepare for a trip to Tarkwa on Sunday to face Karela United on matchday five, Bampoe will have to pass late fitness test to return to the team or Yussif will have his first start of the campaign.

Kotoko accept Ghana FA’s decision to play home games behind closed doors

The Porcupine Warriors have declined to further contesting the decision taken by the football association following their supporters’ misbehaviour

Asante Kotoko will now play five of their next home games without their supporters at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium following the club top hierarchy’s decision not to appeal to the sanction given to them by Ghana Football Association.

Following the defeat to Berekum Chelsea last weekend, a section of the supporters clashed with the police on grounds as they wanted to allegedly attack match officials who handled the game.

In the process, one supporter suffered a gunshot, losing his left eye in the process after surgery and Ghana FA decided to fine Kotoko Kotoko cedis as well as play their next five home games in closed doors.

“Asante Kotoko have agreed to Ghana FA’s decision to sanction them with a five-home games behind close doors in Ghana Premier League,” according to the club’s director of communications Kennedy Boakye Ansah.

“We have taken the decision in good faith and will now plan on how to win these games without our supporters. It is an unfortunate situation but we believe that we shall surely overcome and return to winning ways. Everyone should remain calm and do what he or she can do to help us win the games in the empty stadium, ” he added.

The development means that Kotoko will now play Ebusua Dwarfs on Sunday without their fans as they hope to recover from two defeats on the bounce.

Asibu: Dwarfs supporters wanted me ‘dead’ as they attacked me spiritually & physically

The Crabs former boss has shed lights on why he tendered in his resignation letter after only four games in the top-flight

Former Ebusua Dwarfs coach Robert Asibu Raymond has revealed that he vacated his position due to the constant attacks he suffered from the club’s supporters.

Despite losing four games on the bounce in the Ghana Premier League, leaving Dwarfs without a point and languishing at the bottom of the log, Essibu insists the poor form was even orchestrated by some of the supporters.

“The supporters wanted to destroy my life. Some of them attack me spiritually and physically and I can lose my life as a result so I have decided to resign and be a free man,” Asibu told Otec FM.

“I have sacrificed a lot for the club and I think enough is enough. This is because the personal hatred was unprecedented. Some of them always want us to lose so that they can achieve their agenda. If I die today because of Dwarfs, it is my family that will suffer.

“I have never regretted taking this decision because coaches are hired and fired. I qualify to work anywhere with my license so any club that will be willing to support me so I’m ready to join another club in future,” he added.

Dwarfs head to Kumasi on Sunday to face Asante Kotoko on matchday five at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
