COVID-19: At least 300,000 Africans expected to die – UN Agency

The COVID-19 pandemic will likely kill at least 300,000 Africans and risks pushing 29 million into extreme poverty, the U.N. Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) said on Friday, calling for a $100 billion safety net for the continent.

Africa’s 54 countries have so far reported fewer than 20,000 confirmed cases of the disease, just a fraction of the more than two million cases reported globally. But the World Health Organization warned on Thursday that Africa could see as many as 10 million cases in three to six months.

“To protect and build towards our shared prosperity at least $100 billion is needed to immediately resource a health and social safety net response,” the UNECA report stated.

UNECA is also backing a call by African finance ministers for an additional $100 billion in stimulus, which would include a halt to all external debt service.

The agency modelled four scenarios based on the level of preventive measures introduced by African governments.

In the total absence of such interventions, the study calculated over 1.2 billion Africans would be infected and 3.3 million would die this year. Africa has a total population of around 1.3 billion.

Most of Africa, however, has already mandated social distancing measures, ranging from curfews and travel guidelines in some countries to full lockdowns in others.

Yet even its best-case scenario, where governments introduce intense social distancing once a threshold of 0.2 deaths per 100,000 people per week is reached, Africa would see 122.8 million infections, 2.3 million hospitalisations and 300,000 deaths.

Combating the disease will be complicated by the fact that 36% of Africans have no access to household washing facilities, and the continent counts just 1.8 hospital beds per 1,000 people. France, in comparison, has 5.98 beds per 1,000 people.

Africa’s young demographic – nearly 60% of the population is below the age of 25 – should help stave off the disease. On the other hand, 56 per cent of the urban population is concentrated in overcrowded slums and many people are also vulnerable due to HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malnutrition.

Africa imports 94% of its pharmaceuticals, the report said, noting that at least 71 countries have banned or limited exports of certain supplies deemed essential to fight the disease.

“In a best-case scenario … $44 billion would be required for testing, personal protective equipment, and to treat all those requiring hospitalisations,” it stated.

However, that is money Africa does not have as the crisis could also shrink the continent’s economy by up to 2.6%.

“We estimate that between 5 million and 29 million people will be pushed below the extreme poverty line of $1.90 per day owing to the impact of COVID-19,” the report said.

Nigeria alone will lose between $14 billion and $19.2 billion in revenues from oil exports this year. And the prices of other African commodities exports have plummeted as well.

Lockdowns in Europe and the United States also imperil Africa’s $15 billion in annual textile and apparel exports as well as tourism, which accounts for 8.5% of Africa’s GDP.

DOL: Gold Stars 1-1 Sekondi Hasaacas: Samuel Afful snatches vital point for Hasmal in promotion fight

The Giants of the West picked a vital away point at an unfavourable ground as they continue to push for the solitary slot back to the top-flight next season

Bibiani Gold Stars shared the spoils 1-1 with Sekondi Hasaacas in matchday 12 in Zone Two of Ghana Division One League at the Dun’s Park in Bibiani on Wednesday.

Maxwell Boakye saved coach Kobbinah Amissah’s blushes with a late strike after they looked destined to lose the game after wonderful strike from Samuel Afful.

Gold Stars had a blistering start to the game as Patrick Okine saw his free-kick missing the target by a whisker on third minute after Hasaacas defender Ben Ankrah had handled the ball.

By the half-hour mark, the hosts came close to taking the lead once again when Maxwell Boakye played Okine through but the latter couldn’t send his effort past on-rushing goalkeeper Anthony Brebo.

Two minutes later, Sampson Eduku had the brightest of chances in the first half to send Hasaacas in front but the former Karela United striker surprisingly fluffed that opportunity.

After the break, Hasaacas had the lion’s share of the early chances as Gold Stars were wobbling in midfield but the visitors couldn’t make it count.

Agyin sent a powerful shot off target by 52nd minute before Badu Isaac made a timely clearance after Samuel Afful sent a cut back to Agyin to tap in.

Seven minutes later, Afful capitalised on a defensive blunder against the run of play and calmly slotted in his effort to put the visitors ahead.

Gold Stars regrouped and threw men forward for the equaliser but Abeiku Ainoosen proved to be a pillar at the back for Hasaacas as he dealt with almost every dangerous build up.

However, Gold Stars found a breach in Hasaacas’ defence by the 83rd minute to snatch the equaliser. Midfielder Maxwell Boakye latched on to a pass from his teammate and went past his marker before sending his last ditch effort beyond the reach of goalkeeper Bŕebo.

There were several temporal hold up and scuffles between players of both sides and the referees as well as technical teams as homes fans also displayed their displeasure particularly on officiating.

Despite Gold Stars pushing for a winner, Hasaacas kept their cool and were resolute at the back to record a vital away point. The referees were held hostage for minutes before the police and fire service officers helped to escort them to their dressing room.

Football legends deserve better treatment in Ghana, says Anthony Yeboah

The former Phobians defender has waded into concerns raised by a section of Ghanaians on how football greats have been poorly treated after their active careers

Former Accra Hearts of Oak defender Anthony Yeboah, affectionately known as Ember or Suhum Nsawam, has bemoaned Ghanaians attitude of neglecting sports heroes and heroines especially footballers in their time of need but surprisingly shower unimaginable tributes and praise on them after their demise.

Over the years, a lot of football legends have passed on to the next world after battling with illness, rejection and adverse poverty but little or no help were given to them while alive.

In March this year, former Black Stars captain AKwasi Owusu and Opoku Afriyie ‘Bayie’ were confirmed dead and it was later revealed that Owusu in particular died as a pauper.

The 75-year-old former striker before his death was Ghana’s second all-time topscorer and even held the record of most goals against a single side in Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers when his nine goals against Niger in 1970 helped the Black Stars to snatch a slot at the finals.

Yeboah, who also had a stint with Bofoakwa Tano before sojourning to Europe for greener pastures, believes such conducts have the tendency of killing the spirit of patriotism in young footballers since a lot of the departed legends died early as a result of impoverished  conditions they endured.

” I recieved news about the demise of Akwasi Owusu with a shock. What was worrying was his living condition before his death. This attitude of abandoning great people must end,” Yeboah told AshesGyamera.com

“The youth are watching and if care is not taken, nobody will be willing to sacrifice for the nation again so government must also help in several ways.”

“I have initiated a welfare project together with former colleagues at Bofoakwa including Nana Darteh, Nana  Eshun and Papa Yaw that will seek to aid those in need. These three people are also in  talks with other stakeholders to come on board to support this laudable initiative.

“Many great souls have fallen but I believe people like Dan Owusu who was Ghana Premier League topscorer for three consecutive times deserves better conditions now. Others like Teacher Musah who is the longest serving team manager in the anals of Ghana football of Bofoakwa fame plus others should be treated as real legends.

“I will also entreat the media, especially the electronic type to employ sports legends as  panelists to help resucitate the dwindling fortunes of Ghana’s sports with their in-depth expertise and also give them some stipends as pertains in Europe,” he added.

Yeboah, after hanging his boots, now works as the chief executive officer of Markus and Tony’s Sports Consult International based in United Kingdom as he hopes to help nurture talents for the future.

Aduana coach Tandoh slams Kotoko boss Maxwell Konadu; insists he plays ‘village tactics’

The Fire Club’s manager has descended heavily on his colleague after a bizarre showing on Wednesday

Aduana Stars coach W.O Tandoh has insisted that Asante Kotoko coach Maxwell Konadu is overrated after defeating the Porcupine Warriors 1-0 in Ghana Premier League matchday 11.

Konadu allegedly opted to start the game with ten men as midfielder Martin Antwi sat down the entire duration in the first half, forcing Aduana to retaliate by also benching Farouk Mohammed.

However, Samuel Bioh scored the only goal of the game to maintains Aduana incredible record against Kotoko.

“Maxwell Konadu is a village coach who came to play village tactics in Dormaa. He is a disgrace to Ghana football & new generation of footballers. He didn’t and doesn’t deserve to coach a national team. If Kotoko deploy such bush tactics in London, Hearts will beat them,”- Aduana coach Tandoh on Angel FM.

Kotoko will now host Bechem United this weekend
