Ghanaian referee confirmed dead in Takoradi

The Knight of the Whistle has passed on to the other side of the world after battling a short illness

Former Ghana Division One League referee Akorliga Kwoffie has been confirmed dead by family members according to reports filed by KYFilla.

The promising referee was one of the experienced men that was highly tipped to officiate the top-flight in the coming seasons but couldn’t live up to expectations that the Western Regional Referees Association had for him.

Details of his burial will be announced in the coming days as Ghana Football Association’s top hierarchy are yet to be notified officially.

The country’s football association chief was elected into office exactly a year ago today and AshesGyamera.com chronicles the events leading to his rise to fame

Today marks exactly one year ago that Ghana Football Association president  Kurt Okraku came to power to replace beleaguered Kwesi Nyantakyi who had been handed a life ban from football activities by FIFA.

A night before the elections at the auditorium of College of Physicians and Surgeons in Accra, pollsters tipped George Afriyie to record a landslide victory over his opponents but things changed dramatically.

In the first round, Kurt Okraku took a surprising lead with 44 points while delegates ‘favourite’  George Afriyie only had 40. Meanwhile, Nana Yaw Amponsah who is currently the chief executive officer of Asante Kotoko came third and Fred Pappoe picked six votes while Amanda Clinton had zero.

After the second round of the GFA presidential elections Kurt Okraku was still in the lead but could not be crowned winner since he couldn’t beat the 50 per cent plus one vote expected once again despite having an improved figure.

He had additional 15 votes in this round while George Afriyie amassed only three additional votes as compared to the first round.

Nana Yaw Amponsah 15 (13.4%)

After this round, a final lap began and a winner, regardless of the number or percentage, was expected to be declared by the Electoral Commission representatives around.

 

However, few minutes into the voting process, George Afriyie conceded defeat leaving only Okraku as the sole candidate left and members were allowed to vote whether they will accept him as their new president or not and he garnered over 90 per cent of the total votes casted.

It will be recalled that members present at the Congress accepted a motion by Randy Abbey that King Faisal and Great Olympics should be added to the top-flight clubs in order to make it an 18-team league since that will resolve all outstanding legal issues involving Ghana FA.

Kotoko pre-season friendly in Akosombo cancelled; players play among themselves

The Porcupines did not make it to Akosombo for their pre-season friendly on Saturday due to undisclosed reasons

Asante Kotoko saw their plans to play another a pre season friendly match in Akosombo with an unnamed lower division side on Saturday cancelled,  AshesGyamera.com can confirm.

Maxwell Konadu’s charges kicked start their tour in the Eastern region with a 3-0 thrashing of Odweanoma FC last weekend and were hoping to step up their preparations but it was called off in the eleventh hour.

However, the technical team grouped the team into two sides with captain Felix Annan, who was later replaced with Kwame Baah, leading one of the sides while his deputy Emmanuel Gyamfi led the other side.

A brace fŕom Osman Ibrahim who returned from a loan deal at King Faisal, coupled by goals from William Opoku Mensah and Maxwell Baakoh helped Team A led by Annan to win 4-3 after regulation time. Augustine Okrah nearly scored a spectacular but his free-kick hit the underside of the post late in the second half.

The consolation goals from Team B were scored by Samuel Frimpong, Mudasiru Seidu and an own goal by Mubarik Yussif.

King Faisal 1-2 Wassaman United: Insha Allah Boys handed reality check ahead of league start

The Insha Allah Boys failed to record their second straight win in their pre-season friendlies as they continue to fine tune for the new campaign

King Faisal’s preparation for the 2020-21 Ghana Premier League campaign was dealt major blow as they suffered a 2-1 home defeat to lower-tier side Wassaman United at the Paa Joe Park in Kumasi on Saturday.

After pipping Ebony FC 1-0 in midweek, coach Slavisa Bozicic paraded a much improved side this time with the aim of making it two wins in a row.

However, after a slow first-half which was dominated by poor passes and lack of opportunities from both sides, Samuel Opoku opened the scoring very early after the break against the run of play.

The forward connected a pass from his teammate on the left flank and went past King Faisal defenders before slotting the ball home.

Clement Adu ‘Okocha’ capped a nice display on the day with a fine finish few minutes later. The youngster turned his marker inside out before unleashing a thunderbolt from 25 yards to the admiration of few supporters present to double the visitors’ lead.

With ten minutes to full time, Ibrahim reduced the deficit for King Faisal but it was too little too late to stage a comeback as Wassaman defenders held on to record a victory.

King Faisal, who failed to record a single win after 14 games in the truncated season earlier this year, will open their account with a trip to Sogakope to battle West African Football Academy (WAFA) on November 15 before they hosts two-time league champions Aduana Stars at the Ohene Ameyaw Park in Techiman on November 22.

Tension in Kotoko camp as new signings creep in ahead of friendly in Akosombo

There is an unusual tension in the camp of the Porcupines after seven new players arrived to partake in the ongoing pre-season in Eastern region

Ahead of Asante Kotoko’s second friendly game against an unnamed lower division side in Akosombo on Saturday, several key members of the squad are feeling uneasy following the arrival of new players, AshesGyamera.com understands.

The club has announced the signing of ten new players including Ghana goalkeeper Razak Abalora and Bofoakwa Tano defender Andrew Appau who arrived at the team’s training camp in Koforidua this week.

With Brazilian midfielder Fabio Gama also about to join the first team after his two-year deal was announced on Friday, tension is creeping into the squad as each one is not assured of a starting place or more game time in Maxwell Konadu’s program for the 2020-21 Ghana Premier League and Caf Champions League season.

Already, it is unclear who among the top three goalkeepers – Felix Annan, Kwame Baah and Razak Abalora – will be named as first-choice despite report suggesting that Abalora signed his deal with a clause indicating that he will be the first option.

“If you come around, almost everyone is acting strange somehow because they don’t know which other player will be welcomed in the next hour. It is normal to feel threatened especially when you have few weeks to begin a season,” a source close to team told AshesGyamera.com.

“There will be a friendly game this afternoon against one of the lower divison sides in Akosombo and I can tell you that all the players are ready to give out their all because the least mistake will mean that you’re gradually going down in the pecking order of the coach.

“Until the transfer window is closed, I don’t believe the players will feel easy and relaxed in camp. This is because rumours have it that players from Europe may even join and it could be true since Fabio Gama’s move initially turned out to look like a fiction but later became a reality,” the source added.

Kotoko defeated Odweanoma FC 3-0 in their first pre-season game last weekend. They will kick start their GPL campaign with a home fixture against Techiman Eleven Wonders on November 15 at Accra Sports Stadium before they travel to Golden City Park in Berekum to lock horns with Berekum Chelsea on November 22.

Asante Kotoko and Hisense enter partnership agreement; players to win monthly awards

The fast-rising electronic company is the latest to join the Porcupine Warriors family in a three-year deal

Asante Kotoko and Hisense Electronics have signed a three-year partnership agreement, the two parties have officially announced.

Kotoko are expected to benefit immensely from the deal as Hisense will provide them with a cash component as well electronic equipment including items for the club’s best performer every month.

Meanwhile, Kotoko will advertise on all their platforms several products from Hisense before, during and after matchdays for their supporters and the general public to patronise.

“Asante Kotoko Meets Hisense.
We are delighted to announce a partnership with Hisense for the next three seasons, beginning with 2020/21,” a club statement read.

“This mutually beneficial deal will make Hisense the Official Household Electronic partner of Asante Kotoko SC,” the statement added.

Hisense have become the second company to join the Asante Kotoko family after Adonko Next Level Energy Drink completed a deal on Monday.

Arsenal captain Pierre Emerick Aubameyang has made a shocking revelation ahead of his side’s Premier League game against Leicester City on Saturday.

The influential striker told English press on Friday when asked how he is faring with former Atletico Madrid and Ghana star Thomas Teye Partey who joined Arsenal on transfer deadline day, Aubameyang revealed that although he is widely known to be a native of Gabon,  he has some of his roots coming from West African country Ghana.

“My family is from Gabon but I also have some roots in Ghana where Thomas [Teye Partey] is from so we are family too!'” Aubameyang said with a lot of confidence despite declining to open up further.

“It is good for some of our younger players as well to have a player like him, of his calibre at training. They will learn a lot from him,” he added.

Aubameyang and Partey are likely to start a Premier League match together for the first time since the latter made his debut as a late substitute in Arsenal’s 1-0 away defeat to Manchester City last weekend.

On Thursday, Partey was adjudged Arsenal’s Man of the Match in their 2-1 away win over Austria Vienna in the Europa League and would be expected to replicate that performance.

Asante Kotoko complete TENTH signing as Brazilian Fabio Gama joins until 2022

The Porcupine Warriors have added to their squad a Brazilian midfielder who joins after completing his deal in the Scandinavian world

Ghana Premier League giants Asante Kotoko have signed Brazilian midfielder Fabio Da Silva Gama in a two-year deal, the club has announced on Friday.

The 28-year-old joins the Kumasi-based club as a free agent after concluding his deal with Swedish lower-tier side Jonkoping IF.

With Kotoko seriously eyeing the top-flight and aiming for at least qualification to the group stage of Caf Champions League, coach Maxwell Konadu has been busy in the market and seems to have gotten all his desired players.

Gama, who has also played for Varnamo and Botafogo arriving, has become the tenth signing since the transfer window was opened couple of weeks ago.
 Ghana goalkeeper Razak Abalora, former Atalanta defender Patrick Asmah as well as Andrews Appau, Abdul Latif Anabila, Evans Adomako, Kwame Opoku, Yusif Mubarik and Emmanuel Sarkodie are the other new players to have joined the club.
Kotoko are currently in Koforidua for their pre-season tour and would like travel abroad to fine tune before the season kicks off on November 13 according to reports in the local media.

Official: Abass Mohammed rejoins Medeama until 2022

The Yellow and Mauve have announced the capturing of their former forward ahead of the upcoming campaign after three seasons away

Former Asante Kotoko forward Abass Mohammed has rejoined Medeama in a two-year deal as a free agent ahead of the start of 2020-21 Ghana Premier League season, the club has confirmed.

The 27-year-old, who until recently was in the books of Nigerian giants Enyimba FC, arrived in Tarkwa on Wednesday and passed his medical before he was introduced to the first team and technical bench.

Abass became a household name for Medeama between 2014 and 2017 when he helped the club to win Ghana FA Cup and reached the group stage of Caf Confederation Cup.

“I look forward to working with a crop of talented players to ensure we achieve our set goals,” an excited Abass told the club’s website.

” I want to achieve all of the goals, win as many trophies as possible to position the club on the global map.

“This is home and I can’t wait to start repaying the confidence on the pitch.”

Meanwhile, Medeama coach Samuel Boadu was full of praise after Abass was introduced to him and the rest of the technical team

“Abass is a fantastic player and a top professional and we are very happy to have him here with us,” Boadu said.

“He understands the philosophy of this great club and will be a huge asset for us.

“I am happy he has returned to Medeama to contribute significantly to the drive, ambition and passion of the club. We look forward to an exciting time with him and others in the upcoming season. We are delighted to be able to add his versatility and quality to the squad before the season starts.”

Abbas may make his League debut on November 15 when Medeama face Great Olympics on opening day.

Bechem United appoint Atuahene Gyasi as new Public Relations Officer

Former Ghana FA Cup champions Bechem United have appointed Emmanuel Atuahene Gyasi as the club’s new Public Relations Officer ahead of the 2020-21 league season.

In a statement signed by the club’s chief executive officer Nana Kwasi Daryln, Atuahene who currently works with Bechem-based After 2 Radio will help improve and achieve their goals with his requisite knowledge and experience.

“I’m highly overwhelmed and enthused given this opportunity to serve the club,” Atuahene said

“I’m hopeful that the indefatigable fans of the club will support me whole heartedly in achieving the club’s set goals.

“As the PRO, I’ll help strengthen the flow of information to the entire fanbase of the club and the general public at large. Indeed Bechem United FC is the Pride of Ahafo and I’ll surely make them proud,” the optimistic talented Atuahene added.

Atuahene is a student of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and currently reading B.A French and Francophone Language as his major and Sociology as minor respectively.

Bechem had their best finish in the top-flight in 2013-14 season after finishing in mid table thanks to the brilliance of former player Augustine Okrah and coach Tom Strand.
