Twitter to establish presence in Africa and why Ghana will be the headquarters?

Twitter’s mission is to serve the public conversation, and it’s essential, for the world and for Twitter, to increase the number of people who feel comfortable participating in it. To do this, we need to make it easier for everyone to join in and provide more relevant experiences for people across the world.

Today, in line with our growth strategy, we’re excited to announce that we are now actively building a team in Ghana. To truly serve the public conversation, we must be more immersed in the rich and vibrant communities that drive the conversations taking place every day across the African continent.

We are looking for specialists to join several teams including product, design, engineering, marketing and communications.

Full details on current job openings can be found on the Twitter Careers site. Aligned with our existing WFH policies, we look forward to welcoming and onboarding our new team members remotely so that we can make an immediate impact while we explore the opportunity to open an office in Ghana in the future.

Why Ghana?

As a champion for democracy, Ghana is a supporter of free speech, online freedom, and the Open Internet, of which Twitter is also an advocate.

Furthermore, Ghana’s recent appointment to host The Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area aligns with our overarching goal to establish a presence in the region that will support our efforts to improve and tailor our service across Africa.

Whenever we enter new markets, we work hard to ensure that we are not just investing in the talent that we hire, but also investing in local communities and the social fabric that supports them. We have already laid foundations through partnerships with Amref Health Africa in Kenya, Afrochella in Ghana, Mentally Aware Nigeria Initiative (MANI) in Nigeria, and The HackLab Foundation in Ghana.

As part of our long-term commitment to the region, we’ll continue to explore compelling ways we can use the positive power of Twitter to strengthen our communities through employee engagement, platform activation, and corporate giving.

We still have much to learn but we are excited to listen, learn, and engage. Public conversation is essential to solving problems, building shared ideas, and pushing us all forward together. We can’t wait for the next step on that journey

Asante Kotoko supporters hail ‘magical’ Okrah after another assist against Berekum Chelsea

The forward exerted pressure on the visitors and assisted one goal as the Porcupine Warriors went top of the log

Asante Kotoko forward Augustine Okrah put up another sublime performance in the 2-0 victory over Berekum Chelsea in Ghana Premier League on Sunday.

The 27-year-old assisted Kotoko’s first goal of the day when he latched onto a pass from Mudasiru Salifu before sending in a tailor-made cross to Andy Kumi for a simple tap in before Godfred Asiamah added another late in the game.

Okrah also assisted another goal in midweek when Kotoko annihilated Bechem United 3-0 and the series of good performances have seen Kotoko supporters hailing praise on him.

Okrah won Ghana Premier League top scorer and Best Player awards in 2014 when he scored 16 goals for Bechem.

Kotoko will travel to Accra next to face second-placed Great Olympics in the top of the table clash.

Young Porcupines WhatsApp Group donate to Kotoko players ahead of Bechem United clash

The Porcupine Warriors were presented with several pack of bottle water by a group of young men and women

Asante Kotoko players and technical team were gifted with many packs of bottle water at the Adako Jachie Training ground by a fast-rising supporters wing of the club called Young Porcupines WhatsApp Group on the morning of Easter Monday.

Led by former St. Joseph’s College of Education student, Amofa Augustine, who is currently teaching at Akyem Ntronang R/C Basic School in the Birim North district, Eastern region, the group gave the items to the players after their recovery training following the 1-1 stalemate against Techiman Eleven Wonders over the weekend.

The items were recieved by captain Felix Annan and defender Abdul Ganiyu Ismail on behalf of their teammates. Annan hailed the kind gesture of the supporters and also called on other supporters to emulate it as the players are punching above their weight to win this season’s Ghana Premier League title.

Kotoko will host Bechem United in an outstanding league game at the Len Clay Sports Stadium in Obuasi on Wednesday and a win would see them moving up to second on the log with 31 points, two behind Great Olympics.

Eleven Wonders banned from Techiman; set to play home games on neutral ground

Following the Directive of the Ghana Football Association in consultation with the National COVID-19 Task Force that Ghana Premier League Matchday 18 matches to be played behind closed doors, the Association has taken notice of the various violations that took place at the Nana Ohene Ameyaw Park at Techiman during the Matchday 18 Ghana Premier League game by Techiman Eleven Wonders FC.

The GFA sadly notes that the home team violated the GFA Statutes by issuing ticketing to admit supporters in the match against Asante Kotoko SC when the Association did not print and didn’t issue tickets for the match.

The GFA notes that for game that was billed by the GFA to admit only 30 club officials, Eleven Wonders FC deliberately admitted full capacity of supporters in violation of GFA Regulations and GFA Approved Matchday COVID-19 Protocols.

The Association feels very scandalised that a Premier league club such as Eleven Wonders FC deliberately put the game into disrepute and the entire fate of football at risk.

The Executive Committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has taken the following immediate actions:

1. The GFA condemns, without any reservations, the violations of the GFA Statutes, Regulations and the GFA’s Playing Football Behind Closed Doors Protocols – Lack of Social Distancing, Number of Spectators etc – that took place at Techiman.

2. That GFA Prosecutor is tasked to immediately charge Eleven Wonders FC, the home club for adjudication at the Disciplinary Committee concerning the various breaches.

3.  That until the case is fully determined, Eleven Wonders FC is banned from playing their home matches at the Nana Ohene Ameyaw Park, Techiman. The Competition Department will fix the venue for the upcoming matches of Techiman Eleven Wonders FC.

4. That all other clubs are to take note and comply strictly with the GFA COVID-19 Matchday Protocols.

The GFA wishes to sound a note of caution to all members (especially Premier League clubs, Division One League clubs, Women’s Premier League clubs, lower league clubs) and stakeholders that the Association will not hesitate to take action(s) to ensure strict adherence to the national COVID-19 Protocols as well as its Approved GFA Matchday Protocols.

The GFA wishes to assure all Ghanaians that the Association will continue to support the national fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. The Association has urged all clubs to continue with the education of all their supporters and the public on the COVID-19 protocols.

The Association will continue its engagements with all relevant stakeholders for the safety of all.

Ten percent transfer fee to Ghana FA and Ghalca must be scrapped, says Afriyie

Former Ghana Football Association vice president George Afriyie has argued that the ten percent of transfer money from player sales to Ghana Football Association and Ghana League Clubs Association should be abolished.

According to Afriyie, the idea behind this law made several years ago, isn’t relevant today since clubs have devised new ways to avoid it because they don’t see any positives from it.

“We must erase the 10 per cent paid by clubs to the Ghana FA after direct onward transfers. It has outlived its purpose and most clubs evade it by transferring players on loan initially and pay $500 for the ITC with an option to make it permanent later. Once it is made permanent they pay nothing to the GFA. Palmer’s transfer became talk of town because the money involved was huge,” George Afriyie told Nhyira FM.

“I am one of the advocates who will propose at congress for the 10 per cent paid by clubs to the GFA for transfers outside to be scrapped.

“This is because the purpose has been defeated. The purpose wasfor the FA and GHALCA to use the funds generated to support the clubs in terms of their welfare, juvenile football and others but that has not been realized. It has been a while we organized any competition for juvenile football,” he added.

“Let’s say Osei Palmer scouts a player from a colts club in Ashaiman, he is able to sell the player and 5% each of the amount is given to the GFA and GHALCA and it is not used to develop youth football, then what benefit has the club gained.

He added: “GHALCA for instance is supposed to be a welfare body for the clubs but has become welfare for members but not the clubs. When have they gone to the aid of any club or clubs in difficulty? I am positive I will have the support of a lot of clubs to get rid of it.”

Afriyie is the bankroller of Division One League side Okyeman Planners and the club recently transferred two players to Europe during the January transfer window.
