Referees & RTU players held hostage in Nkoranza after Division One League game

The violence in Zone One seems to be on the rise despite the visit of Ghana FA president few weeks ago

There have been terrible incidents recorded in Nkoranza Children’s Park this evening when Nkoranza Warriors shared the spoils 0-0 with RTU in Zone One of Ghana Division One League, AshesGyamera.com can report.

According to our sources, the assistant referee one of the game was allegedly hit with stones in the first half after the home supporters insisted he was aiding RTU with his decisions.

As a result, the centre referee had to halt the game close to fifteen minutes before it was restarted.

However, matters became worse after the final whistle, as the supporters allegedly charged on to the pitch and overpowered the security men present in their quest to show their ‘displeasure’ to the referees.

Our sources claim that the players and referees were held hostage and reinforcement had to arrive from Techiman to the venue to protect lives and properties. Some of the RTU players, however, sustained minor injuries before their bus was escorted from the park by the police.

RTU are topping the Zone 1 log as they hope to make a return back to Ghana Premier League next season.

Okraku and Ghana FA team greeted by angry protesters in Techiman

Ghana Football Association president  Kurt Okraku and his entourage were greeted by a group of angry protesters in Techiman as he arrived in the Bono East regional capital as part of his tour to help curb down hooliganism in football.

After beginning the tour in Kenyase and passing through Wamanafo, Dormaa Ahenkro and Berekum to meet club officials and supporters leaderships, the Ghana FA team arrived outside the Bonokyempem Hall at the Municipal Assembly in Techiman in the afternoon on Wednesday. However, unlike their previous destinations, Techiman was extremely different as the atmosphere was initially charged.

The president and his travelling crew were reportedly welcomed by supporters of Techiman City standing across the road, alongside some members of the local press and started to verbally attack them for deliberately targeting their club.

It will be recalled that Techiman City have been banned from their home ground after the game against Tamale City FC was abruptly ended for security reasons and breach of COVID-19 protocols.

As a result, Techiman City’s next home game against Real Tamale United has been scheduled to take place at Wa Sports Stadium, a decision which the supporters deem it unfair and a bad precedent.

According to reports, one of the supporters was holding a schnapp and eggs to invoke curses while others led by Kwame Zion also had red bands on their heads to show their displeasure.

However, the situation was later resolved and the program kicked off. In the end, it ended successfully but the points and agitations raised by Techiman City supporters were taken in good faith and the Ghana FA team promised that they will hear from them.

“It is true that we protested. About 50 supporters rushed to the venue and made their feelings known to the Ghana FA travelling team,” Zion told AshesGyamera.com.

“They can’t use just one person to hate us. The ruling which came this week asking us to play our game against RTU in Wa is very unfair.

“It will cost us around 6,000 cedis to move the players to and fro meanwhile we didn’t do anything bad. Kurt Okraku told us that he does not hate Techiman City and has helped us one way or the other so we are hoping to see another ruling changing the venue or else we will not honour the game,” he added.

They tour continues on Thursday in Kintampo before they head up north to conclude it.

Some members of the entourage included Kurt E.S. Okraku- Ghana FA president, Takyi Arhin ‘Thunder’, Michael Osekere – Vision FC, Eugene Noble – DOL Board Member, John Ansah – Premier League Committee member, Tophic Sienu – Division One League Board member, Fred Acheampong – Executive Committee, GFA, Christine Ziga – Chairperson Referees Committee among others.

Star Oil Company manager jailed 15 years for squandering company’s funds on betting

Yussif Abubakar, a former worker of the Hohoe branch of Star Oil Company was sentenced for stealing GH¢139,118 belonging to his employer.

His mother, seemingly broken by the development, needed physical support as she made her way out of the courtroom wailing.
Abubakar was charged with stealing about two years ago.

He pleaded not guilty but was found guilty by the court after the full trial.

The trial judge, Mr Yaw Opoku Acheampong, in a 30-minute sentence said he would have sentenced him to 20 years imprisonment but the convict, throughout the trial showed remorse for his action.

Abubakar, whose lawyer was not present in court when judgment was pronounced, was also ordered to pay back the money to the company.
He is said to have used the money for sports betting but did not win any of the bets to enable him repay the money he took from the company’s coffers.
Facts

Presenting the facts of the case, the prosecution indicated that the convict was employed at Star Oil Company in Hohoe on November 17, 2012 as a washing bay manager and a pump attendant before rising through the ranks to become a branch supervisor for the same company on March 3, 2018.

According to the prosecution, on November 19, 2019, Abubakar was asked by the company’s Relationship Officer, Mr Setor Alorwu, to produce receipts of payment of sales made from November 11, 2019, to November 19, 2019, but he failed to do so.
This raised a suspicion of discrepancies in his accounts at the company.

A report was then lodged at the Hohoe Police Station on November 19, 2019 which led to Abubakar’s detention.

An audit was subsequently conducted into the company’s accounts which revealed that proceeds from sales to the tune of GH¢139,118 made from November 8-19, 2019, were missing from the sales records.

Abubakar, when questioned on the whereabouts of the money, admitted his inability to deposit the money into the company’s account and said he used the money for sports betting.

Twitter to establish presence in Africa and why Ghana will be the headquarters?

Twitter’s mission is to serve the public conversation, and it’s essential, for the world and for Twitter, to increase the number of people who feel comfortable participating in it. To do this, we need to make it easier for everyone to join in and provide more relevant experiences for people across the world.

Today, in line with our growth strategy, we’re excited to announce that we are now actively building a team in Ghana. To truly serve the public conversation, we must be more immersed in the rich and vibrant communities that drive the conversations taking place every day across the African continent.

We are looking for specialists to join several teams including product, design, engineering, marketing and communications.

Full details on current job openings can be found on the Twitter Careers site. Aligned with our existing WFH policies, we look forward to welcoming and onboarding our new team members remotely so that we can make an immediate impact while we explore the opportunity to open an office in Ghana in the future.

Why Ghana?

As a champion for democracy, Ghana is a supporter of free speech, online freedom, and the Open Internet, of which Twitter is also an advocate.

Furthermore, Ghana’s recent appointment to host The Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area aligns with our overarching goal to establish a presence in the region that will support our efforts to improve and tailor our service across Africa.

Whenever we enter new markets, we work hard to ensure that we are not just investing in the talent that we hire, but also investing in local communities and the social fabric that supports them. We have already laid foundations through partnerships with Amref Health Africa in Kenya, Afrochella in Ghana, Mentally Aware Nigeria Initiative (MANI) in Nigeria, and The HackLab Foundation in Ghana.

As part of our long-term commitment to the region, we’ll continue to explore compelling ways we can use the positive power of Twitter to strengthen our communities through employee engagement, platform activation, and corporate giving.

We still have much to learn but we are excited to listen, learn, and engage. Public conversation is essential to solving problems, building shared ideas, and pushing us all forward together. We can’t wait for the next step on that journey
