“I love Ghana and speak Twi but I want to play for Spain,” Athletic Bilbao striker Inaki Williams reveals why

The La Liga suggests he feels more Spanish than being a Ghanaian since he was born and raised in Basque

Spanish born midfielder with Ghanaian descent Inaki Williams has insisted that he is still waiting for his chance to play for the Spanish national team despite attempts by Ghana Football Association to change his mind.

The 27-year-old was born in Basque to Ghanaian parents [Maria and Felix] and has lived all his life in Spain.

Although, he has only featured for the Spanish national team once in 2016 against Bosnia and Herzegovina in a friendly game, he is still hopeful of becoming a regular after five years of neglect.

“I’m grateful to where I grew and became who I am. Ghana tried to convince me, but I was born in Spain, in Bilbao. I won’t ever forget my family roots, but I feel Basque and can’t con anyone,” Inaki told Guardian.

“I would be comfortable with Ghana, I’m sure, but I shouldn’t be there …”

“And my mum knows how people love football there: it’s quite something, and she’d be worried about me.

“When my mum’s angry, she swears at us in Ghanaian but we speak Spanish. When my parents came, it was English but we lost that. I could have a conversation in English but it’s not fluent now. When my grandparents call, I speak to them in Twi. I admire and love Ghana, the culture, food, tradition.

“My parents are from Accra and I really enjoy going. But I wasn’t born or raised there, my culture’s here, and there are players for whom it would mean more. I don’t think it would be right to take the place of someone who really deserves to go and who feels Ghana 100%,” he added.

Iñaki Williams was named after a priest Iñaki Mardones who helped his father and mother to settle in Spain upon their arrival in Europe and he shed light on how his parents fled Ghana through the Sahara desert without food and water in search of greener pastures and better life for him and his siblings

“They did part in a truck, one of those with the open back, 40 people packed in, then walked days,” Williams said.

“People fell, left along the way, people they buried. It’s dangerous: there are thieves waiting, rapes, suffering. Some are tricked into it. Traffickers get paid and then halfway say:

“The journey ends here.’ Chuck you out, leave you with nothing: no water, no food. Kids, old people, women. People go not knowing what’s ahead, if they’ll make it. My mum said: ‘If I knew, I would have stayed.’ She was pregnant with Inaki but didn’t know.

“They reached Melilla [Spain’s north African enclave], climbed the fence and the civil guard detained them. They didn’t have papers and came as migrants, so you get sent back.

“When they were in jail a lawyer from [the Catholic aid organisation] Caritas who spoke, English said: ‘The only thing you can try is tell them you’re from a country at war.’ They tore up their Ghanaian papers and said they were from Liberia to apply for political asylum. Thanks to him, we arrived in Bilbao.”

Inaki became a La Liga legend last Friday after he broke the record for most consecutive games in La Liga history when Athletic Bilbao beat Deportivo Alaves 1-0.

That game means that Inaki has played 203 successive matches and has now surpassed the record held by former Real Sociedad defender Juan Larranaga from 1986-1992.

The last time Inaki failed to play. aLa Liga games was on April 17, 2016 which is more than five year ago.

“The doctors and physios say it’s incredible, that it’s impossible for there to be a case like this again, especially playing high-intensity games every three days,” he says.

“Thank my parents for the genes: I don’t know what it is but there’s something inside me.

“I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t played with knocks or pain; I’ve played on medication with injections, moments the manager and the team needs you. And I had two seasons going into the final weeks with four yellows. ‘Buah, if there’s a fifth, that’s a ban.’ But I don’t protest much or kick anyone,” he admits, laughing.

“[But] it wasn’t really until the last week that it was on my mind, when there were three games in seven days to break the record: home, away, home. You’re so close, there’s a risk, you think: ‘Woah, something could happen, I could lose this.’ Until then, you don’t think of it. Destiny is written.”

Inaki’s junior brother Nico Williams, is also currently a player of Athletic Bilbao and the 19-year-old born in Pamplona made his debut for Bilbao this year.

He is also reportedly in the books of Ghana Football Association and could play for the country of his parents unlike his senior brother.

Ghana will play Zimbabwe in the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers on Saturday at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium and the return leg has been slated for Tuesday in Harare.

Should Ghana qualify to the World Cup, Iñaki may be tempted to rescind his decision and represent Ghana at the international level.

Dan Owusu reveals why he regrets playing for Black Stars

The former Ghana Premier League topscorer has shed light on reasons why he sometimes feels discouraged for representing the Black Stars during his heydays

Former Ghana international striker Dan Owusu has revealed why he feels disappointed with the treatments meted out to former Black Stars players and admits he at times regret playing for the senior national team.

The former Bofoakwa Tano poster boy shot to fame in the 1970’s as his goalscoring prowess made him a household name.

He became the first ever Ghanaian player to win Ghana Premier League’s topscorer award on three successive occasions.

However, he insists he has been neglected just like a lot of his colleagues following their retirement and even when they get the opportunity to get closer to the national team, they are treated like strangers.

“The old players of our national team have been rejected by the Football Association. We were invited to join the Black Stars but haven’t been given the best of treatment,” Owusu said, as quoted by Rainbow Radio.

“William Klutse, the technical director of Inter Allies, was invited to travel with the national team but was treated like a common supporter. They did nothing to show that he is a legend.

“We are always invited but when we get there we aren’t allowed to get close to the players. I am very sad, and I have regretted playing for the Black Stars of Ghana.

“I got injured through serving the national team, and nothing has been done concerning this happening.

“We were given an amount of GH¢17,000.00 by the former president but it isn’t enough for the former players. Something special should be done for former players for their dedication and services to the country,” he added.

Ghana will play Zimbabwe in the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers first leg on Saturday at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium before they travel to Harare four days later for the return fixture.

Black Stars massively whip Soccer Intellectuals in friendly ahead of World Cup qualifiers

The Black Stars continued their preparations for the upcoming Fifa World Cup qualifiers with a wonderful display in their first friendly game

Ghana’s Black Stars defeated lower division side Soccer Intellectuals 8-0 in a friendly game at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium on Tuesday.

The game was part of the preparations ahead of the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe scheduled for Saturday.

Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac deployed a 4-3-3 formation as he started Joe Wollacott in post ahead of Richard Attah, Ati-Zigi and Danlad Ibrahim.

Dreams FC defender Philimon Baffour started as the right back while Baba Rahman took over the place of the left back ahead of Gideon Mensah of FC Bordeaux. Leicester City defender Daniel Amartey and Celta Vigo star Joseph Aidoo completed the defensive setup.

In midfield, Real Mallorca’s Baba Iddrisu partnered Thomas Partey and Kudus Mohammed in a triangular shape while Joel Fameyeh, Kamaldeen Sulemana and Jordan Ayew led the attack.

Stade Rennes midfielder Kamaldeen Sulemana scored a brace just like Steadfast FC youngster Abdul Fatawu Issahaku.

Also, Kudus Mohammed and and Benjamin Tetteh, Yaw Yeboah and Joel Fameyeh added one goal each to wrap up a wonderful display.

Interestingly, Jordan Ayew missed a penalty as he was presented with an opportunity to score his first goal in 47 games for club and country. However, he compensated his missed opportunity with four assists out of the eight goals scored by the Black Stars.

Ghana will continue with their preparations on Thursday at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium before Zimbabwe also train at the venue on Friday.

What Ghana Premier League players should learn from Emmanuel Gyamfi’s saga with Asante Kotoko

The midfielder, unceremoniously, is on his way out of the Porcupine Warriors camp but what lessons must be learnt from his exit?

The Emmanuel Gyamfi saga at Asante Kotoko which has led to his contract termination by the club should be a case study to top footballers, if not all footballers, in the Ghana Premier League.

These days, a ‘top’ player playing a top club should have a strong PR team who are ready to work for him 24/7 and at times dictate which news should come on social media or get discussed on radio and TV.

You can’t just sit down and think that your performance on the field of play is enough to make you successful. Everyday, people including football administrators, journalists, supporters and even your enemies set ‘agendas’ so you must topple them.

There are players who have done worse things than what have been said about Gyamfi but little is known by the general public because of one reason or the other.

Gyamfi has been a key player for Kotoko in the last three seasons but because the narrative about him have always been negative, many supporters believe he should leave the club.

Employ people, if you don’t have close friends, who will work for you pro Bono, to manage your social media and news which will be out there for you.

Grow your social media presence so that you can also use your accounts to speak your side of the story.

I’ve been advising some of the players and forcefully started something for some of them. Today, they are forever grateful even though they didn’t see the need some years ago.

The players should remember that they are celebrities just like musicians Sarkodie, Shatta Wale, Stonebwoy as well as politicians. These people have employed others to manage their presence on social media and elsewhere for them so that they can be relevant and always look good in the eyes of their followers and potential investors.

Zimbabwe coach Mapeza eyes Ghana scalp in World Cup qualifiers

The Warriors interim coach insists that they will do a decent job against the Black Stars despite the odds favouring their opponents

Zimbabwe coach Norman Mapeza has admitted that it will he difficult to play against Ghana in the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers but believes they can pull a surprise.

The Warriors are yet to pick a win in the qualifiers after sharing the spoils at home against South Africa and losing 1-0 away against Ethiopia. These results coupled with others led to the sacking of Zdravko Lugarosic.

Ghana, on the other hand, have also changed their coach after Charles Kwablah Akonnor was replaced with Milovan Rajevac a fortnight ago due to poor run of results.

“We are going to play a very good team. If you look at their squad, they have got so many players playing in Europe and I watched their game against South Africa and they did well despite losing,” Mapeza said.

“With the new coach coming, they will change their game plan. We don’t know much about their new coach except that he was there when they played the World Cup in South Africa,”

“They have Thomas Partey, Jordan Ayew. Those are quality players, so definitely it’s not going to be an easy game. They are a very good team.” He added.

He continued: “The squad that I picked, I think it’s a balanced squad, I am someone who is much more into the flexibility of players. Football is evolving, so you need flexibility in the squad.

“I hope with the guys who are here, we can go and do a good job for the nation in Ghana. Playing away in Africa is not easy. You look at the odds, they favour Ghana because of their history.

“They play in the Africa Cup of Nations finals a lot. It’s not going to be easy, but we will go there and give it our best and try to bring a positive result,” he concluded.

In the other group game, Ethiopia will host South Africa in Addis Ababa before the return leg takes place next week at the Soccer City Sports Stadium in Johannesburg.

Hearts of Oak handed major boost as WAC will arrive in Ghana without Salaheddine

The youngster is expected to miss the first and second leg against the Phobians due to an injury relay

Wydad Athletic Club of Morocco will arrive in Ghana for the Caf Champions League second round first leg clash against Hearts of Oak without highly-rated youngster Salaheddine Benyachou, the club has officially confirmed.

The 21-year-old, who joined WAC from Olympique Club de Safi in a deal worth around US$350,000, went under the knife this week following an appendix operation and he is expected to sit out of action for at least three weeks before he can completely be healed.

As a result, WAC will travel to Ghana after the international break without him as Hearts of Oak are billed to host them on October 22 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

This is a huge advantage to Hearts since Salaheddine is a very good player who has consistently tormented the defence of opponents. Hearts coach Samuel Boadu will now have to switch his attention to other players and deploy tactics that will prevent them from having a field day.

Salaheddine will also miss the return fixture slated to take place at the Mohamed V Stadium in Casablanca on October 29.

He has so far made five appearances this season for WAC.

Wydad Athletic Club, unlike Hearts of Oak who eliminated Guinean side CI Kamsar in the preliminary round, were drawn bye and this game will be their first in the competition this season.
