Milovan Rajevac insists he is not under pressure to defeat Zimbabwe

The Black Stars gaffer believes his charges are ready to defeat the Warriors in the cliffhanger encounter on Tuesday

Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac has rejected suggestions that he is under intense pressure to defeat Zimbabwe in the all important Fifa World Cup qualifying game to be played on Tuesday.

The Black Stars are in a dire need of three points in order to keep the chase on South Africa who are also playing at home against Ethiopia.

“First of all, I will like to thank Zimbabwe for their hospitality. This is my first time in Harare so we feel warmly welcomed and I am very happy to be here,” Milovan told the media.

“As we all know, this is a very important match for us and we expect a tough match. We respect the team we are playing against and we have a clear target, which is to qualify for the World Cup so we are going to do everything in our power to put good performance tomorrow and try to win.

“Definitely for us it is very important and we have our target and we know it is not going to be easy. The first match was also not easy because in some part of the match, Zimbabwe showed they also have quality.

“In the beginning of the second half, we were facing some difficulties which show there is no easy match and it is important to concentrate throughout the match to try to prepare a good game plan and to reach appropriately in some moment.

“I have faith and I have confidence in my players and I know they will do their best so we are hoping for the positive result. As I said, this is very important for us so we are trying to be positive all the time and not feel the pressure but confident for the match.

“I’ve been here for a short time and we are getting to know each other very well and it is difficult to make big changes in this short period of time but I think we are growing and we are improving. In every next match, I suppose we make fewer mistakes and try to improve our performance.

“These players are learning quickly and they are determined because they know what is at stake and so they are aware of the task. We function together and last match, we managed to have a positive result, which is very important. We don’t take time for experiments, we need to have good results and we are all aware of that so we will do our best to make it happen.

“In this kind of job and especially in this kind of situations you have to learn how to manage the pressure. For us it is a must win match and every next match is the most important and hardest match so let’s take one step at a time.

“We have confidence and so we will learn how to handle the pressure because if you cannot handle pressure, you can’t succeed in this game. It is something that we have to cope with and I think we will do that successfully,” he added.

Milovan was tight-lipped whether he will start Jordan Ayew or not against Zimbabwe as the Crystal Palace striker is yet to score in almost fifty games for club and country.

“I never reveal the starting line up the day before the match because this is not the way I do my work but the goal scorers and attackers often come to crisis and in this circumstances they are trying to overcome the problem and start scoring to make their performance better,” he said.

“We are here and we talk to him. He feels the support he gets from everybody. Whether he starts or comes as a substitute later in the game, we count on all of our players. As I always say, it is important to start the match in an appropriate way and to finish it in the right way,” he concluded.

The kick off time of the game has been slated for 15h00 GMT and 3pm local time.

Asante Kotoko sign Cameroon striker Mfeuge as twelfth new player [pictures + videos]

The Porcupine Warriors have added one international player to their squad as they prepare to mesmerize other clubs in the upcoming season

Asante Kotoko have completed the signing of Cameroonian striker Mfeuge Georges Omgba from Avion Academy of Douala in a three-year deal, AshesGyamera.com can confirm.

The 24-year-old was signed as a replacement for Uganda striker Steven Mukwala after Kotoko failed to land his services despite several attempts.

Mfegue is equally good with both feet and has been a key member of Avion as his goals and assists helped the club to gain promotion to the Cameroonian top-flight in 2018.

In the last three seasons, Mfegue has ended as Avion’s topscorer in the league, scoring a combined 26 goals and provided 29 assists in the process.

Mfegue, who is noted for his speed, power and exquisite finishing ability in the final third, is expected to travel from Cameroon to Dubai and join his new teammates as Kotoko continue with their pre-season in the Gulf region.

He has become the twelfth player signed by Asante Kotoko in this year’s transfer window.

Mfegue joins Dickson ‘Yaw Dick’ Afoakwa, Augustine Agyapong, Sheriff Mohammed and Samuel Appiah as the new players to arrive at Kotoko. The others include Clinton Opoku, Richmond Lamptey, Maxwell Agyemang, Samuel Boateng, Isaac Oppong and Richard Boadu.

AshesGyamera’s sources have revealed that Berekum Chelsea captain Stephen Amankonah has arrived in Dubai to join Kotoko after also sealing a three-year deal with the club. Kotoko are expected to announce his signing together with Mfegue this week.

CK Akonnor’s son Charles-Jesaja eyes Black Stars call-up under Milovan Rajevac

The youngster is now making name for himself in Germany and hopes to follow the footprint of his father

The son of former Ghana coach Charles Kwablah Akonnor has revealed his ambitions to step in the shoes of his father sooner than later as he eyes a chance in Ghana’s senior national team.

Many footballers start their careers on the street. Open to very few opportunities, they learn the intricacies of a game which has passion as its first currency. In Africa, some call an opportunity grace, others call it luck, to some it’s strategy. In some cases, it’s the sheer sound of one’s last name.

Some names open doors, especially when they are spiced with skill and talent. For CJ, the son of CK, it’s a bit of all. Chance, hard work, opportunity, grace and luck. He’s living his name.

Chance Jesaja Hermann, 21, is the son of former Black Stars coach, CK Akonnor, but that’s not all about him. He’s a young, growing talented footballer. One who learnt the trade of the game when his most little ideas hardly saw professional football as an opportunity to live in the reality of his dreamland.

He is growing in popularity in his homeland, Ghana but many are still confused as to why he doesn’t carry his father’s name. There are complications to the story and he’s always known himself to be Hermann, he said. There’s a lot to a name, but there’s more to familial connections more than a name. He may not be carrying his father’s name, but he’s just as close as a son can be to his father.

“Yes. Of course he (CK Akonnor) is my dad. He’s in my life,”

“I grew up with my mother, so we were living in a small apartment. We didn’t have much. But it was good to live as a little child. I had fun in my childhood, my mother raised me up so I was happy in my life when I was a little child.

“Back then, I used to play a lot of football. I started early and my mother was always there with me. So I had a good childhood.”

CJ played football in parks in Germany and from that moment on, the dream got clearer. He wanted to play the game and it wasn’t a surprise to his father’s closest allies. They saw the ability in him, and if refined, he could go places.

The motive was simple. Get him to good academies and see him blossom in the coming years. It was the right move and his father’s agent when he played was instrumental to his progress.

Honestly, it was my father’s old agent who brought me there (to Wolfsburg). So I knew that my father was playing there and I knew they wanted me. So I took my chance and went there. From 2015 to 2021. I joined Wolfsburg at the age of 14.”

For three years, CJ Hermann was on the radar of some of Europe’s most illustrious clubs. In 2021, he settled for where his development would be faster and where he could play as many number of games as he desired. Belgian club Kortrijk have had Ghanaians in the past, including Bernard Kumordzi and Asiedu Attobrah. It was home to the youngster and he was in good company. When he signed for the Belgians, he had Eric Ocansey as one of his teammates and was joined a few months after he signed by former Werder Bremen player, Jonah Osabutey.

Highly-rated in Europe, and loved in his native, Germany and Ghana, Hermann said the love he’s shown in the West African country gives him a filling sense of pride. Despite not being in Ghana for more than a decade, he knows the country, its people and its culture.

“To be honest, I feel honoured (by Ghanaians) because I feel attached to them. Although I haven’t been there for 11 years, but I still feel attached to them. It makes me proud to hear that people are talking about me. So it’s a good feeling.

“I grew up with Twi. My mother taught me how to speak Twi. I can’t speak it well. When I speak people understand me, but not the African way. But I can speak Twi. It’s good.”

One of the easiest connections of Africans to the motherland is food and arts. Everyone loves Africa’s arts but Africans have a lot of special affection to the food they eat. Probably the biggest banter in the history of foods, Nigerian and Ghanaian Jollof rice is a regular point of argument between citizens of both countries. Hermann loves a slight banter too as he is a big fan of the Ghanaian Jollof.

“I eat a lot of Ghanaian food. I eat rice with stew. Jollof rice. Ghanaian has the best jollof. Laughs hysterically]. I eat a lot of Ghanian soup. Yes. Waayke too.”

The 2022 African Cup of Nations in Cameroon may come too early for Hermann but he hopes to someday represent the Black Stars when he’s called upon. Trained in Germany for the better part of his career, and represented Germany from U15 to U19, the next step may be in Ghana’s senior national side if he gets a chance .

“There’s no doubt that I’ll like to play for Ghana. I’ll go direct. When they call me, I’ll go direct. You know I was born and raised in Germany but I’m a black man. I’m from Ghana, so I have this Ghana heart still in me. I just feel attached although I wasn’t there for a long time. But when they call me, I’ll go direct because I want to make the people there proud.

“I can name a lot of Ghanaian footballers. I follow them. The Ayew brothers. Sulley Muntari. I watched them all in the World Cup in 2006. Asamoah Gyan. Michael Essien. Because of Essien, most Ghanaians want to play for Chelsea. They’re like legends. Yes and my dad of course. Abedi Pele, Tony Yeboah.

“And now in my generation, there are also lot of Ghanaian players who’ll like to play for Ghana also like Richmond Tachi, who plays for Dortmund second team. John Yeboah playing for Willem II in Holland.”

There’s nothing as respectable as playing for one’s fatherland. It comes with a lot of good emotions and pride, and currently, like CJ Hermann, many Ghanaians want to be a part of the rejuvenation of the Black Stars. They’d like to someday don the white jersey of Ghana and play before large crowds in Accra and Kumasi. They’re big dreams.

“Most of my guys would like to play for Ghana. We’ve had that conversation before and most of them say Ghana. I think when the chance comes for them also, they’ll play for Ghana.”

Hermann is not alone on the German train in his family. Two of his brothers play in Germany and will someday be faced with the choice of where to represent. It’s a decision that will come with time, and the coming years may leave the brothers with making important decisions. Hermann doesn’t know what his brothers’ desires would be but he knows it’s a question of seasons.

“I have two brothers. One plays in Dortmund, one plays for Hannover 96.

“I think the future will tell (where they’ll represent). I don’t know what they want to do, but I think the smallest one of us will play for Ghana. Right now, the one who’s playing in Dortmund, not long time ago, in his debut for the U15 national team, he played for Germany. I’m proud of them. They’re doing their stuff. I’m helping them where I can help them”

The one who’s playing in Dortmund is Charles Jr. He’s 15. Then the other is 13.”

Born and raised in Germany, Hermann had to move to Belgium to get more minutes under his belt. He said that came with a lot of adjustments, to style and systems, but he’s getting used to its demands. “I had to get used to this style of playing in Belgium. It was a little bit difficult in the beginning. But now I’m getting used to it. I’m getting more stronger. I can feel it in the training sessions. I am getting fitter and fitter. So I’m waiting on my chance to play and to score.

“I’m a centre forward. I’m a striker but I like to play football. I’m a real 9 but most of the time, I like to play and use my speed and run into the deep-empty spaces, open spaces. I look up to Lukaku. For the goal thing I look to Lukaku. But for playing style and fun, I look to Thierry Henry.

“I want to achieve many many great things to be honest. I know the way won’t be easy to get to where I want to get. But right now I’m focused on getting playing time so I can start to score. So I hope the following year I can go to the world cup.

“It’s in my mind right now. I want to start playing and scoring goals so I can feel better on the pitch, feel confident. So when the call up comes, I hope I can help my fatherland.”

Ghanaian music in the past few years has gone notches higher in terms of value and acceptance. A key component of Afrobeats, Ghanaian music has reached more ears in the past few years, including Hermann’s. The Kortrijk attacker is a lover of old and new music and his musical desires, although mainly African, are cosmopolitan.

“I like to listen to Ofori Aponsa. He’s an old school musician. But right now, Migos is my guy. In Africa, Omah Lay and many Nigerian artists doing good music right now, like WizKid, Burna Boy. Of course Sarkodie the legend.

“American music, my favourite artist is Drake and Pop Smoke – because you can feel the energy in his music but he sadly passed away.”

The chance he waits for will be determined by how well he performs in his Belgian club, but he is up to the task and believes he has what it takes. Ghanaian national selectors have a choice to make and he has his chance to take, when he’s called upon.

Spain lose second final in succession as France win Uefa Nations League

Le Blues left it late to shock Spain in the final of the Uefa Nations League and succeed Portugal as new champions on Sunday

France became the new champions of the Uefa Nations League after defeating Spain 2-1 in the Milan on Sunday.

After both sides failed to break the deadlock in the first half as chances became premium, the game became lit after the break.

Oyarzabal gave Spain the lead by the 66th minute but that didn’t last longer than expected. Benzema quickly equalised for France with a right-foot beauty into the top right corner .

PSG forward Mbappe then sent France in front for the first time in the game with calm finish.

Although, Mbappe was initially offside when Hernandez played the pass to him but Garcia’s touched hence, according to the officials, played him on since it means the game was starting ‘a new phase of play’.

They add this trophy to the World Cup title they won three years ago and have become the first nation to win the two trophies.

Spain have painfully lost two final this year since they lost in the final of the Olympic Games and now Nations League.

Barnieh scores brace as Hearts whip Dzida FC 6-1 ahead of WAC visit

The Phobians made another huge statement as they continue with their fine tuning for the first leg of the continental showpiece

Ghana Premier League champions Hearts of Oak thrashed Dzida FC 6-1 in a friendly at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.

With first choice goalkeeper Richard Attah on international duties with Ghana, coach Samuel Boadu started Richard Baidoo in post and captain Fatawu Mohammed played as the right wing back.

Raddy Ovouka also took charge of the left wing back while Mohammed Alhassan and Robert Addo Sowah were deployed as the two centre backs.

In midfield, Salim Adams and Frederick Ansah Botchway occupied the defensive roles while Ibrahim Salifu and Daniel Afriyie Barnieh were used on the left and right wings respectively.

Kofi Kordzi and Isaac Mensah were used as the two strikers in a 4-4-2 formation.

Two goals from midfielder Daniel Afriyie Barnieh gave the Phobians a perfect start to the game ad that unsettled the lower tier side.

Later, a goal each from strikers Kofi Kordzi and Isaac Mensah ensured that Hearts were in the driving seat.

Substitute Patrick Razak and Salifu Ibrahim also found the back of the net before Dzida FC also scored a consolation after finding a breach in Hearts’ defence.

Hearts will host Wydad Athletic Club from Morocco on October 17 at the Accra Sports Stadium before the reverse fixture takes place a week later in Rabat, Morocco.

The winner after the tie will advance to the group stages of the Champions League while the loser drops to the Cat Confederation Cup.

Hearts defeated CI Kamsar from Guinea in the preliminary round while Wydad Athletic Club were drawn bye.

He was presented with a late chance to win the game for Monarchs by the 85th minute but a Colorado Springs defender saved the situation.

Milovan Rajevac reveals why Asante Kotoko captain Ganiu and others were dropped from Ghana squad

The Black Stars gaffer has shed light on why the Porcupine Warriors skipper and other four players were left out of the game against the Warriors

Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac has explained his reasons behind the shocking decision to drop Asante Kotoko captain Abdul Ganiu Ismail ahead of the Black Stars game against Zimbabwe played at the Cape Coast Sports on Saturday.

Ganiu together with Spezia Calcio midfielder Emmanuel Gyasi, Brentford winger Tariqe Fosu and Joseph Alfred Duncan were dropped from the squad but no reasons were allocated.

After Ghana defeated Zimbabwe 3-1 on Saturday, Milovan took the opportunity to explain the rational behind their drop.

“He [Ganiu] is not injured. It is just a situation we had and we needed to excuse few players as we could only register 23 players for the match and we needed to invite more players because of the COVID-19 protocols,” Milovan said.

“They should be proud but it is always a tough decision to choose somebody you think is more appropriate for some games. It was a coach’s decision. It doesn’t mean they are not in contention for the next match. They are with us and part of the team,” he added.

Ganiu is currently with his Asante Kotoko teammates in Dubai for a pre-season tour in the Gulf region ahead of the start of the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League season.

Kotoko are expected to spend two weeks and return on October 22. They will open their campaign with an away trip to Dawu to face Dreams FC on October 29 before they host Bechem United at home at Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

Bibiani Gold Stars fails to sign Abednego Tetteh

The striker was hugely linked with the league debutants but the negotiations couldn’t materialized

Bibiani Gold Stars chief executive officer Kwesi Adu has confirmed that Hearts of Oak striker Abednego Tetteh was not registered by them ahead of the start of Ghana Premier League.

Tetteh failed to live up to the expectations last season as Hearts won the Ghana Premier League for the first time in nine seasons.

As a result, he was regarded as surplus to requirement by coach Samuel Boadu and was not even registered for the club’s participation in the Caf Champions League.

However, the negotiations to join Gold Stars fell through at the eleventh hour and the club opted to sign youngster Nana Owusu Kwabena as his replacement.

“We didn’t register Abednego Tetteh for our maiden campaign in Ghana Premier League. It was something beyond us,” Adu told Otec FM.

“While we were hoping to sign him as our first player, we realised that he was also having other negotiations so we had to pull back.

“It was unfortunate we could not sign him but I believe that the quality of players around and the few additions will make Gold Stars successful. Our new coach Michael Osei is doing a wonderful job and we are optimistic that things will go as planned,” he added.

Gold Stars after missing out on Tetteh have been able to secure the services of defender Samuel Amofa, Abubakar Aziz and Evans Owusu from Liberty Professionals.

Also, midfielder Lateef Abubakar, Frank Agyei Jnr, Michael Ainoo, Mohammed Polo and Kamara have been signed by the cub.

Gold Stars will begin their maiden appearance in the league with a home game against Berekum Chelsea at the Dun’s Park before they travel to Tarkwa to face Medeama. On match day three, Gold Stars will host Asante Kotoko at home.
