Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu extols Fabio Gama & others at Akwasidae festival

The Brazilian had the opportunity to experience the rich Asante culture and drew praise from the paramount chief in the process

Asante Kotoko midfielder Fabio Gama was part of a host of dignitaries who participated in 2021 edition of Akwasidae which took place at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Sunday.

The Brazilian joined Kotoko last season as a free agent and has since become an instant hit despite the club failing to win any major trophy.

With Kotoko’s matchday seven fixture in Ghana Premier League against Hearts of Oak suspended due to the latter’s participation in Caf Confederation Cup, Gama was selected as part of the club’s delegates to participate in the festival.

Others included head coach Prosper Ogum Narteh, midfielder Isaac Oppong and captain Abdul Ganiu Ismail as well as director of communications David Obeng Nyarko.

Gama, just like his teammates present, were mobbed by some supporters after the event as they wanted autographs while others only wanted to snap pictures with them.

According to sources close to the club, Otumfuo was impressed with Kotoko’s performance this season and particularly heaped praise on Gama.

He further urged the coach and players to double their efforts in order to achieve their set goals at the end of the season.

Kotoko currently sit third on the Ghana Premier League log with 13 points, three points behind city rivals King Faisal. They will welcome Real Tamale United to the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Wednesday.

King Faisal 1-0 Elmina Sharks: Osman Ibrahim’s goal sends Inshallah Boys to top of GPL log

The Inshallah Boys have leapfrogged Aduana Stars and their city rivals to take custody of the first position for the first time this season

King Faisal defeated Elmina Sharks 1-0 on matchday seven of Ghana Premier League at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday.

After a heated early exchanges where chances became premium for both sides, it was Faisal who had the first shot on goal through Zubairu Ibrahim by the tenth minute.

Faisal finally had their tails in front after Osman Ibrahim shot them ahead in the game by the 27th minute after a nice build up.

After the break, Sharks threatened Faisal’s goalkeeper Frank Boateng when Nii Tetteh and Samuel Arthur combined to set up Michelle Sarpong but his last ditch effort was saved.

On the 58th minute, Faisal thought they had doubled their lead after Mawuko Wayo rounded goalkeeper Lord Martey but he was later ruled offside.

Three minutes later, Wadudu Yakubu saw his long range shot saved by Martey as Faisal kept on pressing for another goal.

Enoch Aglenyo was presented with the best of opportunities in the half for Sharks to equalise but the striker surprisingly fluffed the chance.

Sharks finally had the ball at the back of the net on the 86th minute after Justice Mensah’s effort beat goalkeeper Boateng. However, referee Ben Kwame Sefah insisted that there was a foul in the build up on the goalkeeper.

Faisal have now moved top of the log with 16 points, two points above Aduana Stars who also defeated Great Olympics on Saturday.

Cameroon announce 40-man provisional squad for 2021 Africa Cup of Nations; Ghana yet to release squad

The Indomitable Lions boss has released the provisional squad he would like to use for the upcoming competition

Cameroon coach António Conceiçao has named a provisional squad for next month’s TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, Cameroon 2021.

Conceiçao released the 40-man list on Friday December 10, officially launching the Indomitable Lions’ quest for a sixth crown on home soil.

The squad’s life-wire is constituted by Arnaud Djoum, Njie Clinton, Toko Karl, Vincent Aboubakar, Christian Bassogog, Fai Collins, Oyongo Bitolo and Michael Ngadeu, all instrumental during Cameroon’s fifth AFCON triumph in Gabon 2017.

Apart from a few new faces, the team is also well represented by players who championed both the AFCON and Qatar World Cup qualifiers.

SCO Angers defender Enzo Ebosse, Galatasaray’s Sacha Boey, in-form Asteras Tripolis forward Kevin Olivier Soni and Ebobisse Ebolo, who plays for San Jose Earthquakes in the USA Major League Soccer, have got their first national team call-ups.

Of them, only goalkeeper Narcisse Nlend Junior and defender Samuel Kotto play with domestic clubs Coton Sport and Apejes of Mfou respectively. The rest of the squad is made up of abroad based players.

The five goalkeepers who have made the cut are led apparently by Ajax Amsterdam’s Andre Onana. Conceiçao lines up 16 defenders from which the apt will be picked.

After overcoming an injury spell, Arnaud Djoum has bounced back as one among eight midfielders. 13 forwrads have been shortlisted, an act that highlights the Portuguese gaffer’s goal-scoring ambitions.

The technical staff will reduce the squad to 28 before the tournament gets underway.

The Indomitable Lions open the 24-nations tournament on January 9 against Burkina Faso. Thereafter, they will confront 1962 champions Ethiopia. Their final group match, on January 17, pits them against Cape Verde.

Boxing: Ghana’s Richard Commey beaten by Ukrainian Loma in World title challenge

The Ghanaian’s ambition to win a world title and raise the flag of Ghana high before the end of 2021 could not become a reality

Loma dropped Commey in the seventh round and didn’t let up in securing the pivotal win before turning his attention to a possible crack at new unified lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr.

Vasiliy Lomachenko dropped Richard Commey with a thud courtesy of a devastating left hook across the chin during the seventh round.

In a flash, he looked over to Commey’s corner and implored them to stop the fight. They didn’t and Lomachenko kept bringing the pain, lasering and connecting on more clean punches Commey’s way.

Again, Loma asked that Commey’s corner end the fight. They refused.

Commey survived the round but was thoroughly outboxed as Lomachenko cruised to a dominating unanimous decision victory at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Saturday night. Judges scored it 119-108, 119-108 and 117-110 all in favor of the Ukrainian. DAZN News had it 119-108 for Lomachenko.

“I saw his situation,” Lomachenko told ESPN following the bout. “It was very hard for him. That’s why I said ‘stop the fight.'”

The 33-year-old Lomachenko (16-2, 11 KOs) didn’t get the stoppage but demoralized Commey with clean punching and connected on a whopping 58 percent of his power shots as well. Lomachenko’s superior hand speed and footwork were on display the entire fight as he was always a step ahead to sting Commey with precise punching and spin him around to stifle him further as part of the overall boxing clinic.

The seventh round knockdown was the punctuation in yet another brilliant performance from the former world champion, who went 2-0 this year after losing by unanimous decision to Teofimo Lopez back in October 2020.

When asked about a possible crack at new unified lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr., Lomachenko jumped at the idea.

“I need this chance,” he said. “If God gives me this chance, I’ll take it.”

And that would include traveling to the champ’s native Australia to scrap it out if need be.

“I’ll go anywhere I need to fight him.”

Kambosos was watching, as he took the time to salute Lomachenko on the win before reminding him that he defeated Lopez two weeks ago and that Loma couldn’t.

Here’s how the entire Lomachenko-Commey main card went.

LOMACHENKO VS. COMMEY; ROUND 3

Just when Commey looks to be getting in a groove with his jab and power shots behind it, Lomachenko stings him with a three-punch combination. He then lands the punch of the round by ducking under a shot from Commey and blasting him with a left right on the chin. (10-9 Lomachenko, 29-28 Lomachenko)

LOMACHENKO VS. COMMEY; ROUND 2

Both men land shots inside as the bout intensifies. Loma works his angles, blasting Commey with a left to the body and another left upstairs. Commey steps in closer and connects inside. Commey slightly buckles Lomachenko’s knees with a shot right on the chin, but the former unified lightweight champ is fine and changes levels with ease to connect with quick shots himself. During the waning seconds, Lomachenko blasts Commey with a left to the body and another left flush to the face to brush him back. Loma then tells Commey to go to his corner, flashing a bit of showmanship

Aduana Stars 1-0 Great Olympics: Bright Agyei’s goal sends Ogya Boys top of the log ahead of Kotoko

The Ogya Boys have gone top of the league log for the first time this season despite a slow start to the campaign

Aduana Stars defeated Great Olympics 1-0 on matchday seven of Ghana Premier League at the Nana Agyemang Badu I Park in Dormaa Ahenkro on Saturday.

After failing to pick a win in their opening two games, including a shocking defeat at home against King Faisal, Aduana have since returned to winning ways.

Aduana coach Joseph Asare Bediako maintained the squad that defeated WAFA last weekend with Bright Agyei and Emmanuel Gyamfi leading the pack.

After three minutes, Aduana went ahead thanks to Agyei’s goal. The forward headed in a powerful cross from Abass Mohammed.

Gyamfi came close to double the lead ten minutes later but his shot was blocked.

After the break, Great Olympics had several half chances but their forwards failed to make it count.

Aduana have now leapfrog Asante Kotoko to top the log with 14 points, one point above the Porcupine Warriors.

Kotoko’s game against Hearts of Oak have been postponed due to the latter’s participation in Caf Confederation Cup.

Video: Asante Kotoko new team bus unveiled ahead of final branding

The Porcupine Warriors new team bus has arrived and will now undergo branding before it is handed over

Asante Kotoko have finally taken custody of their new bus after the club’s management team met all the requirements needed.

The Porcupine Warriors have had issues with the bus they use for their away games and the club’s chief executive officer Nana Yaw Amponsah promised that they will purchase a new bus before the end of the year.

Earlier this week, communications director of the club David Obeng Nyarko denied media reports that the club have secured a bank loan to purchase a new bus.

Reports were rife earlier this week that Kotoko had taken a Ghç1.3 million loan from an unnamed bank to purchase a new bus since the one the players currently use is not in a good shape.

Kotoko currently top the league log with 13 points despite losing the Kumasi derby against King Faisal last weekend.

Kotoko’s game against Hearts of Oak on matchday seven has been rescheduled due to the latter’s participation in Caf inter-club competitions. The Phobians faced Algerian side JS Saoura in the play off of Caf Confederation Cup.

Augustine Okrah upbeat ahead of first-ever game on Sefwi-land against Gold Stars in Bibiani

The Hunters superstar is hoping for a positive outcome against the Premier League debutants at the Dun’s Park on Sunday

Bechem United forward Augustine Okrah says they are set for the Ghana Premier League challenge against debutants Bibiani Gold Stars at the Dun’s Park in Bibiani on Sunday.

The Hunters have enjoyed a perfect start to the campaign as they are currently sitting third on the log after five games. Their last game ended in a goalless draw against another debutants Accra Lions at the Accra Sports Stadium last weekend.

Okrah, who has netted three times and provided one assist so far this season, believes the people of Sefwi land will enjoy the game. He has also urged his teammates to remain focused in order to ‘get something out’ of the upcoming game.

“We’re going to the Sefwi land to play Gold Stars with joy and hope to return with good results,” Okrah posted on Twitter.

“I’m excited that I’ll be having the opportunity to play in front of the good people of Sefwi for the first time in my career and I believe they will enjoy.
See you,” he added.

Okrah won the Premier League best player and goal king the last time he represented Bechem United in 2013/14 season.

Kotoko captain Ganiu, Richard Ofori and three others dropped by Ghana coach ahead of 2021 Afcon -Reports

The Black Stars gaffer is reported to have dropped the Porcupine Warriors centre-back from his plans ahead of the Afcon

Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac has reportedly dropped Asante Kotoko captain Abdul Ganiu Ismail from his provisional squad ahead of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations holding in Cameroon.

With the tournament barely 29 days away, Milovan is expected to officially submit his provisional 30-man squad to Ghana Football Association for scrutiny before an official announcement is made.

Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Richard Ofori, who is currently recuperating from an injury he sustained against South Africa in the World Cup qualifiers, is expected to miss the list.

The technical team believes Swindon Town goalkeeper Jojo Wollacot, Richard Attah and Lawrence Ati-Zigi as well as Asante Kotoko goalkeeper Razak Abalora can do the work in his absence.

Also, Reading defender Andy Yiadom is expected to be dropped from the squad since Milovan believes he is an average player. The Serbian believes Leicester City defender Daniel Amartey can fill the void with assistance from Dreams FC youngster Philimon Baffour.

Former Asokwa Deportivo striker Joel Fameye who is currently plying his trade with FC Orenburg in Russia, will likely be snubbed as Milovan isn’t enthused about his style of play.

Meanwhile, Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu has been added to the squad as Milovan deems him a perfect player to pair Strasbourg defender Alexander Djiku.

Spezia Calcio midfielder Emmanuel Gyasi is expected to be given the opportunity to represent Ghana once again after missing out in all the games since Milovan took over from C.K Akonnor two months ago.

Due to COVID-19, Caf has given each participating country the opportunity to present 28 players for the tournament instead of 23.

The Black Stars, who have been paired with Morocco, Gabon and Comoros Island in Group C, are hoping to improve on their performance in the competition since they were eliminated in the round of 16 by Tunisia in the 2019 edition held in Egypt.

“The Black Stars of Ghana will open camp in Doha, Qatar on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 ahead of the 33rd edition to the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations – Cameroon 2021,” a Ghana FA statement read.

“The team will be in Doha for a period of three weeks to prepare for the Tournament scheduled for Cameroon from January 9 to February 6, 2022.

“The Black Stars will play three International friendly matches in Qatar to give Coach Milovan Rajevac the opportunity to assess his squad for the Tournament.

“Ghana are expected to play a yet to named club side on Tuesday, December 28, before taking on one of the Africa Cup of Nations qualified teams on Friday, January 1, 2022 in another friendly.

“The team will wrap up their test matches against African Champions Algeria on Wednesday, January 5, 2022.

“The Black Stars will depart Doha for Yaoundé on Friday, January 7, 2022 to take on the rest of Africa at the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
