The lecturer cum football coach has been ushered in at Baba Yara Sports Stadium as a replacement for the former Portuguese coach who mutually terminated his contract few days ago

Asante Kotoko have confirmed the appointment of Prosper Ogum Narteh as the club’s new manager and he will be at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium until 2024 having signed a two-year deal on Saturday.

The Porcupine Warriors moved swiftly to bring in the former WAFA coach following the decision to mutually terminate their contract with Portuguese coach Mariano Baretto on Friday.

The 41-year-old coach will be charged with the task of reviving the fortunes of Kotoko after they went trophy-less having failed to win Ghana Premier League and got eliminated from the FA Cup in the round of 16 by Berekum Chelsea.

“We’re delighted to announce Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum as our new Head Coach,” a Kotoko official statement read.

“The Sports Psychologist , Educationist and coach joins us on a 2-year deal from WAFA, having previously handled UCC Soccer Team, Elmina Sharks, Dwarfs and Karela Utd,” the statement added.

What length of contract has Ogum signed?

Ogum, who was the head coach of WAFA and Elmina Sharks, has signed an 24-month contract, with the option of a further year in Kumasi.

His predecessor, Baretto, had been handed a one-and-half-year contract when he was appointed Kotoko boss in March following the sack of Maxwell Konadu. He, however, spent only six months of it but Ogum is expected to last the full duration of his contract.

When will Ogum take charge of his first game?

Ogum will play his first competitive game with Kotoko between October 29 and 30 when the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League season finally kicks off. Before that, he will taking them through the pre-season.

What can Kotoko supporters expect to see under Ogum?

Ogum’s biggest asset is his tactical flexibility and ability to develop players into finish products as well as his vision. He is well known for deploying a 4-3-3 formation, and at times twerk it to a 4-4-2, 3-5-2, and 4-1-4-1 formation with variations.

As a doctorate degree holder, Ogum is also good in research and will go beyond what he has heard about the Kotoko players to know their hiding capabilities. He hugely improved Augustine Boakye and Justus Torsutsey at WAFA last season.

Educational background:

Ogum is a trained teacher. He is a lecturer at the University of Cape Coast Department of Health, Physical Education & Recreation (HPER). Ogum holds a CAF License A badge.

Honours:
Ogum is not a serial winner as he is yet to win a major trophy with any of the clubs he has coached in the past. However, he has picked several accolades at school games with the University of Cape Coast school team.

Ogum has become the seventh manager Asante Kotoko have appointed in three years after C.K Akonnor, Kjetil Zachariason, Maxwell Konadu, Johnson Smith, Abdulai Gazelle and Mariano Baretto.
