U-Turn: Prosper Ogum Narteh hasn’t resigned as Kotoko coach; Board of Directors insist

The highest decision making body in Asante Kotoko has rejected reports that the club’s head coach has tendered in his resignation letter

Asante Kotoko board of directors have debunked reports that head coach Prosper Ogum Narteh has resigned from the club.

On Wednesday, reports were wild that Ogum opted to part ways with the club just after ten months in charge.

Kotoko’s management member Emmanuel Newton Dasoberi also confirmed the news in an interview with Daily Graphic, insisting that the coach took the decision following a disagreement with the board on player recruitment.

“During the meeting with the board to discuss his report to the management, there was a disagreement over his request to sack 10 players and recruit 17 new players, including four centre-backs,” explained Emmanuel Newton Dasoberi, the Administration and Operations Manager of Kotoko.

“It was at the point when some members of the board questioned the justification of some of his requests that Coach Prosper Ogum said he had a two-year contract but wanted to move on with his life, so the club must look for a new coach.

“The coach has not formally written to the club about his resignation, but even when some members tried to persuade him to change his mind, his response was that his decision was final,” he added.

But the board has vehemently denied any thing of that sort and has advised the general public to disregard the information.

Ogum guided Kotoko to win 2021/22 Ghana Premier League title and he is now expected to lead them to play in next season’s Caf Champions League

Exclusive: Asante Kotoko close in on C.K Akonnor to replace Prosper Ogum as new coach

The Porcupine Warriors will likely re-engage their former coach following the resignation of Prosper Ogum Narteh and hope that he will be able to lead the team to glory next season

Former Ghana coach C.K Akonnor will likely travel to Kumasi in the coming days to complete his appointment as Asante Kotoko’s new manager, AshesGyamera.com can report.

The former Ashanti Gold and Hearts of Oak head coach will replace Prosper Ogum Narteh at Baba Yara Sports Stadium and hopes to lead the club to glory in the upcoming season.

Ogum opted to call it a quit on Wednesday following a crunch meeting with Kotoko’s top hierarchy where he insisted that he wasn’t happy with the decision to sell some key players and also suggested that ten players must be offloaded while 17 new ones come in.

“The coach has not formally written to the club about his resignation, but even when some members tried to persuade him to change his mind, his response was that his decision was final,” Dasoberi added.

Meanwhile, Akonnor will likely sign an 18-month contract, with the option for a further year, if Kotoko’s board agrees to management’s choice, and he will be back in coaching after his sack from Ghana’s national team.

Akonnor led Kotoko to the group stage of the Caf Confederation Cup in 2019.

Inside story: Ten players should be sacked & 17 in; Why Asante Kotoko coach Prosper Ogum resigned

The management of Kumasi Asante Kotoko are faced with looking for a new head coach following the resignation on Wednesday of their head coach, Prosper Narteh Ogum, after a meeting with the club’s management and the Technical Committee of the Board of Directors in Kumasi

Ogum’s surprise resignation came just five weeks after he led Kotoko to win a record extending 24th Ghana Premier League title, with a colourful coronation taking place in their final home match against Elmina Sharks at the Baba Yara Stadium on June 12.

The Daily Graphic understands that the Coach’s decision to unilaterally end his contract with the Porcupine Warriors after only one season came as a surprise to both the club’s management members and the board following disagreement over the recruitment of players for the forthcoming season.

An official of Kotoko denied that the coach terminated his GH¢26,500-a-month contract over salary arrears and other conditions of service.

An assistant coach of the home-based senior national team, Black Galaxies, 44-year-old Ogum was Kotoko’s 13th substantive coach in the last decade.

Review meeting

Insiders revealed to the Daily Graphic that the meeting was called to review the club’s performance and also discuss matters including player recruitment, the youth teams and their upcoming campaign in the CAF Champions League.

However, there was some disagreement over a request to recruit 17 new players and sack 10 over poor performance, which reportedly upset the coach who subsequently stepped down as head of the technical team.

Kotoko coach waves

Au revoir: Coach Prosper Narteh Ogum told his employers at the meeting that his decision to quit was final

“During the meeting with the board to discuss his report to the management, there was a disagreement over his request to sack 10 players and recruit 17 new players, including four centre-backs.

Dispute

At the meeting, some board and management members reportedly questioned the prudence in employing 17 new players when he demanded the recruitment of a similar number of players when he joined Kotoko from West African Football Academy (WAFA) at the beginning of the season.

The Daily Graphic has learnt that some board members are hoping to meet Coach Ogum in the coming days to talk him out of his resignation after failed attempts at yesterday’s meeting to get him to rescind his decision.

“The coach has not formally written to the club about his resignation, but even when some members tried to persuade him to change his mind, his response was that his decision was final,” Mr Dasoberi told the Daily Graphic

Meanwhile, AshesGyamera.com understand that Kotoko could re-engage former coach C.K Akonnor to replace Ogum in the coming days.
