Former Ghana international Edwin Gyimah has opened up on a deeply personal and troubling chapter of his life, taking his family to a public platform over an alleged attempt to seize his property.
Speaking on the popular radio programme Oyerepa Afutuo on Oyerepa FM, the 35-year-old defender revealed that tensions within his family have escalated to the point where he now finds himself without a home.
A Career Built on Grit and Achievement
Gyimah’s journey in football has been one of resilience and determination. Known for his versatility and strength in defence, he enjoyed a career that spanned both domestic and international football.
On the international stage, Gyimah earned call-ups to the Ghana national football team, representing his country with pride. While his time with the Black Stars was not extensively prolonged, being part of Ghana’s senior national team remains a significant milestone in his career.
At club level, Gyimah featured for several teams, including stints in Ghana and abroad. Notably, he played for top Ghana Premier League sides such as Asante Kotoko SC and Aduana Stars FC. During his time with Aduana Stars, he was part of the squad that clinched the Ghana Premier League title—one of the standout achievements of his career.
His professional journey also took him beyond Ghana, including spells in South Africa, where he sought to extend his playing career and secure new opportunities.
Return Home and Rising Tensions
According to Gyimah, his decision to return to Ghana from South Africa followed a series of unsuccessful attempts to secure new contracts. Interpreting the repeated setbacks as possibly beyond footballing reasons, he turned to his family for support.
However, what he expected to be a period of healing and regrouping reportedly turned into a bitter dispute.
Gyimah alleges that his sister demanded he sign over ownership documents of his eight-bedroom house in Obuasi in exchange for GH₵50,000. He claims that his refusal triggered hostility from family members, escalating tensions within the household.
A Painful Breaking Point
The situation has now reached a critical stage. Gyimah claims he has effectively been pushed out of his own home and is currently without a place to stay.
In an emotional account, he further suggested that his family may have contributed to the challenges he faced throughout his football career—an allegation that adds another layer of complexity to the dispute.
He is now calling for the immediate eviction of all relatives occupying the property, including his mother, who is reportedly battling the effects of a stroke.
A Story Beyond Football
Gyimah’s story is a stark reminder that life beyond football can be as challenging as the game itself. From representing Ghana on the international stage and winning domestic honours to facing personal hardship at home, his journey reflects both triumph and turmoil.
As the situation continues to unfold, many will be watching closely—not just because of his past as a Black Stars player, but because of the human story at the heart of it.
