Richard Commey defeats Isa Chaniev, wins IBF title

Ghanaian Richard Commey made his second crack at the vacant IBF lightweight title count, claiming his first world title with a second round stoppage of Isa Chaniev.

Commey (28-2, 25 KO) tore through Chaniev (13-2, 6 KO), dropping him late in the first round on a monster right hand. As Commey went to end things before the bell could sound to end the frame, he tripped, which may have been all that saved Chaniev at that point.

But the Ghanaian wasted no time in the second, picking up right where he’d left off. He put Chaniev down with a left hook early in the round, and with Chaniev clearly unsteady as the fight restarted, he charged in and finished things with a final flurry, dropping the Russian for a third time, at which point referee Laurence Cole stopped the bout at 39 seconds of the second round, showing his standard questionable judgment letting it even go that far.

It’s a huge win for Commey, obviously, and fully cements him as one of the top lightweights in the sport today. The winner of this fight reported before the fight to be likely to face WBA and WBO titleholder Vasiliy Lomachenko in a unification bout in April, and that still seems to be the plan.

Commey landed 33 of 105 (31%) of his total punches, and 29 of 69 (42%) of his power shots as he overpowered Chaniev in short order. Chaniev landed 23 of 81 (28%) total punches and 19 of 64 (30%) of his power shots.

Caf Confederation Cup: Asante Kotoko must not give away fixtures in the group stage

The Porcupine Warriors must take notice of little mistakes against the Blue Wave in order not to mess up their group stage campaign

Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko who have enjoyed a wonderful run in the Caf Confederation Cup this season are scheduled to face Al Hilal Omdurman in the opening fixture of Group C on Sunday.

After dreadful campaigns under 11 different coaches since 2008, C.K Akonnor without a doubt has done a remarkable job in his first season in charge of the Porcupine Warriors to not only return them to this stage but have them standing out as one of the favourites to qualify to the knockout stage.

Following uncertainties surrounding their preliminary round fixture, the Kumasi-based side was handed a walkover victory by Caf which in itself was an achievement since they had failed to go past that round on three consecutive occasions.

Gradually, Kotoko have grown in confidence and the goalless draw against Kariobangi Sharks in Kenya coupled with the 3-2 away win over Coton Sport in Cameroon underlined their ambition to shut up shop and focus on avoiding defeat regardless the ground.

In the two away games so far, they have fancied their chances of going toe-to-toe with opponents and the fixture against Al Hilal in Omdurman this weekend won’t be different especially when it is three points at stake.

At this point, Kotoko appear to be unstoppable in their quest to pick one of the two slots in the group but they face a daunting task. Al Hilal despite failing to make it to the group stage of the Caf Champions League are hoping to use this opportunity to reconcile with their aggrieved fans.

They may not be the tightest team defensively, though, but they create enough chances and score many goals when given the slightest opportunities. Moreover, they are always dangerous against Ghanaian oppositions.

The back-to-back defeats in the Sudan Premier League last month including the 2-1 shock home loss to Merreikh El-Fasher confirm that if Kotoko keep it tight at the back in Omdurman, they could create a frustrating atmosphere for Hilal and pick a point or stun them with a win.

Make no mistake, however, any breach in Kotoko’s defence which will be led by Amos Frimpong very early in the game could lead to a busy day because the hosts are found of putting visitors to the sword after breaking their bulwark defence. Their forwards are quick to force opponents to commit penalties especially from counterattacks and that will throw away the fixture just like they won 2-0 against Kotoko in 2004.

Therefore, it is quite understandable for Kotoko midfielder Emmanuel Gyamfi to advise his teammates to work as a unit against Hilal because they will also be playing under floodlights.

“It is obviously going to be a tough game for us. We have watched some of their game and the atmosphere in the stadium is always charged,” Gyamfi said.

“But I believe we can enjoy the game and frustrate them if we stick to the game plan we will be using. We need to play as a team and avoid mistakes, especially in midfield and defence. They are without doubt a good side but we are prepared to shock them,” he added.

Already, goalscoring has not been a major issue for Kotoko in this campaign although Songne Yacouba is yet to break his duck after four games.

Akonnor has given them an improved attacking punch even when the strikers fail to come to the party. When they put three past Coton Sport in the first leg of the play-off round thanks to goals from midfielders Emmanuel Gyamfi, Maxwell Baakoh, and Fatawu Safiu, it was clear that every player in the team is capable of scoring since it added to two goals scored by captain Amos Frimpong.

With Nkana FC facing fellow Zambians Zesco United in the other game in the group, Kotoko need to try and avoid defeat in their game since there are difficult fixtures standing on the way that could affect them greatly.

How Ghana FA Normalisation Committee poorly treated Manchester City youngster Amankwah

The youngster could not believe the frustration he had to go through in the hands of the officials at the football association in order to have a return ticket back to England

Manchester City prodigy Amankwah Yeboah was left wandering at the premises of Ghana Football Association this week after he was dropped from the Black Satellites final squad to participate in the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations

The 17-year-old English-born defender of Ghanaian descent was given a call up by coach Jimmy Cobblah to train with the squad in Sogakope but he was later dropped.

Amankwah Yeboah was left unattended to at the GFA premises by the Normalisation Committee

Amankwah subsequently went to the FA secretariat for a return ticket to England from the Normalisation Committee and he was not even given a face by the secretary Alex Asante and his attempt to meet Dr. Kofi Amoah to solve the issue also proved fruitless.

The youngster roamed about the GFA premises until he left later to England.

After spending several hours at the premises with his father, they got fed up and left with bitterness to arrange for their journey back to England on their own.

According to AshesGyamera.com’s sources, the situation was later solved but the youngster has decided not to honour any invitation from Ghana in the future unless he is convinced that the attitudes of those in the helm of affairs have changed.

“The young boy was very disappointed and you could clearly see it from his looks as he sat at one corner to wait for what they will say,” a source told AshesGyamera.

“Later, his agent arrived and I saw them working around to book a flight so he can leave the country and join his teammates on time. They were bitter from how they reacted at the premises and I think this might have been the first time they had seen such things,” the source added.

The U-20 Afcon has been scheduled for February 2-17 in Niger. Ghana have been paired with Senegal, Mali and Burkina Faso in Group B.

Ghana’s final 21-man squad:

Danlad Ibrahim (GK), Frederick Asare (GK), Manaf Nurudeen (GK),

Montari Kamahini, Gideon Mensah, Prosper Ahiabu, Emmanuel Kumah, Daniel Lomotey, Ibrahim Sadiq, Enock Attah Agyei

Michael Baidoo, Maxwell Arthur, Fard Ibrahim, Nathaniel Adjei, Frank Arhin, Ibrahim Sulley, Saliw Babawo

Isaac Atanga, Ishaaku Kondah (C), Mohammed Kudus, Emmanuel Toku

Kevin-Prince Boateng joins Barcelona in a shock move

The Ghanaian international has joined The Blaugrana and says he hopes to score in the next Clasico

Barcelona have confirmed the surprising transfer of Ghana international Kevin-Prince Boateng from Sassuolo just hours after he was linked with the club.

The transfer, according to reports, includes a €8 million (£7m/$9m) option to buy, while Barca will pay a €2m loan fee for Boateng to feature for them the remainder of the season.

The 31-year-old will be presented on late on Tuesday morning, with a private contract signing set to be followed with a photo session on the Camp Nou pitch and a press conference at noon UK Time.

A statement on the club’s official website reads: “Kevin-Prince Boateng is a player who will surely adapt quickly to the team. With experience of playing in four of the biggest leagues in Europe, the Premier League, the Bundesliga, Serie A and La Liga, he is a man who has scored goals wherever he has been.

“Furthermore, Boateng is a player who versatile to a fault. During his time with Las Palmas with Quique Setién as coach he played as an out and out striker, a typical number ‘9’. However, he is also able to play further back as he did at AC Milan, scoring twice against Barça in his time with the Rossoneri.

“His ability to bring people into the game means he is excellent at playing behind the main striker.”

CAF CC: Asante Kotoko 2-1 (5-3 agg) Cotton Sport: Players ratings

The Porcupine warriors made history in front of their supporters as they reached the group phase of the competition for the first time in a decade

Asante Kotoko pipped Cameroonian giants Coton Sport 2-1 to qualify to Caf Confederation Cup group stage with a 5-3 aggregate victory at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Two goals from captain Amos Frimpong and Maxwell Baakoh did the damage on the visitors despite a late consolation following a mistake by left-back Abass Mohammed.

Kotoko will now have to wait for Monday to know which group and opponents they will face after the draw is held.

How the players fared over 10:

Felix Annan (6) – The shot-stopper was virtually on holiday in the first-half as he did not make a single save but he eventually picked one ball from his net. For a third game running and second game in a row at home, the young goalkeeper could not keep a clean sheet.

Amos Frimpong: (6.5) Captain fantastic. After guiding Kotoko to lift the FA Cup in 2017, the defender achieved another milestone by leading the Porcupines to group stage. He has now scored two goals in the competition.

Abass Mohammed: (5) The youngster was obviously not having a good game after he was brought on to replace suspended Augustine Sefah. It was not a surprise that one of his mistakes led to Coton Sport’s consolation goal. He needs to up his game whenever he is given another opportunity.

Emmanuel Agyemang Badu: (7) The youngster is an asset for the future. He was very composed at the back and won majority of the duels he went in.

Abdul Ganiyu: (6) The bulky defender’s partnership worked to perfection on the day. His recovery and aerial abilities kept the visitors’ attackers at bay especially captain Daouda.

Richard Senanu: (7) The midfielder has proven why he has constantly been picked ahead of Jordan Opoku and Daniel Nii Adjei. Senanu’s work rate and passes were spot on and could be a great factor should Kotoko make it out of their group to the knockout stage.

Kwame ‘Conte’ Bonsu: (7.5) The most improved player in Kotoko set up is the former Heart of Lions player. Judging from his off-the-field issues including serving a jail term, he has been able to recover and marshalled the midfield with ease.

Emmanuel Gyamfi: (8.5) MoTM

The former Mim Freedom Fighters winger was without a doubt the danger man in Kotoko’s set-up with his surging runs and teasing crosses. He was able to tear Coton Sport’s defenders apart and created several goalsscoring opportunities. He should could scores one goal to cap such a wonderful performance.

Abdul Fatawu Safiu: (7) The former Inter Allies man could not make it three goals in three games but he never disappointed through out the game as saw full throttle. He has been a good buy so far for the Porcupine Warriros and coach C.K Akonnor will be happy with his decision to sign him for this campaign.

Songne Yacouba: (7) The Burkinabe international was very quiet but he gradually warmed himself into the game and even won a penalty in added time of the first-half which was converted by Amos Frimpong. However, he fluffed several opportunities, especially in the second-half and could not break his duck in the competition after four games. He was replaced by Obed Owusu.

Maxwell Baako: (8) What a player! The diminutive winger is a delight to watch. He was able to score Kotoko’s second goal from a quick restart.

Substitutes:

They cannot be rated as they spent few minutes on the pitch.

Prince Acquah (76′ min): The midfielder came on for Maxwell Baakoh but his could do little to influence the game.

Obed Owusu (79′ min)

Just like Acquah, Obed’s presence wasn’t felt that much.

The Gifted season 2 episode 11 ‘meMento’ review

In this week’s jam packed episode of The Gifted , Lauren dives deeper into her dark family legacy, while Lorna finally starts seeing sense as Reeva recruits a number of dangerous mutants to the Inner Circle’s cause. Meanwhile Marcos and Blink return to the Morlocks for help and Jace finds himself questioning his and the Purifiers methods.

Following last week’s self contained episode which saw the two sides of the mutant cause come together to rescue Thunderbird from the Purifiers, ‘meMento’ signals a return to the main storylines of the season – and it looks like the fractures in the Strucker family are continuing to appear. Is anyone else really worried about Lauren? Ever since her reunion with Andy she’s become obsessed with training to take the Inner Circle down, as well as unlocking the history of her villanous ancestors Andreas and Andrea Von Strucker. Her obsession with Andreas’ creepy music box is clearly unhealthy, especially as her nightmares of their demise are affecting and changing her powers. Reed is clearly worried, but Caitlin seems to be happy with letting her daughter go down this dark route if it means that she’s getting stronger – can she not see her obsession to destroy the Inner Circle is seriously at the expense of her daughter’s health?! Come on Caitlin!

Meanwhile, how great is it to see Lorna finally come to her senses when she discovers that Reeva recruited three violent criminal mutants who destroyed the Ignavus cruise ship and killed thousands of people in the process, including children.

After admitting this isn’t the cause she signed up for, I’m so glad that she finally reconciled with Marcos and I really enjoyed seeing the two team up to investigate Reeva’s plans. That surprise twist at the end of the episode genuinely surprised me, and it’ll be interesting to see what they do with that information. I’ve got to admit the aurora borealis effect when they kiss is pretty cheesy, but I’m so happy to see them (sort of) back together again!

Returning this episode are the criminally under-used Morlocks, as Marcos once again tries to recruit them to the Mutant Underground’s cause following Caitlin’s pressure on the group to take down the Inner Circle. I really wish the show used these classic X-Men characters more, as there’s so much they could do with them! Blink continues to be the sassiest and most grounded character on the show as she calls Marcos out on being a hypocrite for asking her to take him to the Morlocks, I’m seriously concerned that she’s going to join them though!

Following the attack on the Purifier’s base and the shooting of Thunderbird, Jace seems to finally be questioning just what the hell he’s been doing with the extreme group. When Ted ends up shooting an (unarmed) innocent young mutant in a homeless youth shelter, Jace begrudgingly covers for him, but you can tell the comment from the mutant who he was interrogating was playing on his mind, “My granddaddy didn’t need a reason to run from the Klan, and neither did yours.” Come on Jace – snap out of it!

Overall ‘meMento’ was a decent episode that teased an important meeting for the Mutant Underground in the next instalment, but I still feel like they’re stringing the inevitable showdown with The Inner Circle out. I’m dreading to see what’s going to happen to Lauren if she continues down this path, as well as worrying about Blink’s future with the Mutant Underground. Still, it was great to see some more Eclaris!

John Ackah Blay-Miezah is the ‘biggest’ African Conman & Hustler of all time

Americans have a saying that there is a sucker born every day. The statement speaks to the gullibility of some people to fall for schemes that are patently fraudulent, and should be avoided the same way one would avoid the plague.

Meet John Ackah Blay-Miezah, native of Ghana, man of the world, a portly, elegant, globe-trotting charmer who seems to awe those who encounter him. “A very intelligent, cultured man,” gushed one American admirer. “He knows every opera and can recognize a symphony from just a couple of notes. He is a nationally ranked chess player. He speaks nine languages.” He is also, say authorities, a world-class swindler.

Philadelphia’s newly elected district attorney, Ronald Castille, asserts that since 1972, Blay-Miezah and his American “agent,” Robert Ellis, have swindled at least $18 million from about 300 investors in the Philadelphia area for a non-existent Ghanaian trust fund. Says Castille: “It’s the biggest scam in the history of Philadelphia.” Adds Assistant D.A. William Wolf: “What you had were some of the most successful and intelligent men and women in Philadelphia who bought a treasure map from con men.”

Some sources say that Philadelphians were not the only suckers: the bogus trust may have taken in as much as $100 million from a nationwide network of investors.

According to Blay-Miezah, Ghana’s first president Dr. Kwame Nkrumah named him the sole beneficiary of millions of dollars that Nkrumah had stashed in banks in Switzerland under a scheme described by Blay-Miezah as the Oman Ghana Trust Fund (OGTF). After Nkrumah’s death in 1972, Blay-Miezah managed to sell his OGTF story to investors in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Blay-Miezah had lived in the city for some time, and had spent time in a state prison for writing bad cheques, and failing to settle a huge bill at the Bellevue Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia.

After the con game was brought to the attention of authorities, Time magazine (April 21, 1986 edition), did a story on investors who had contributed at least $18 million (and possibly $100 million) to the scheme, and quoted Robert Ellis extensively on the modalities of the criminal enterprise. Robert Ellis had posted bond for Blay-Miezah in a previous criminal case in Philadelphia, and in return Blay-Miezah appointed Ellis, his American ‘agent’.

The main role for Ellis was to solicit American investors whose money would then be used to facilitate retrieval of alleged millions of dollars bequeathed to Blay-Miezah under the OGTF by the late president Nkrumah of Ghana. Blay-Miezah insisted that he needed cash in hand (which he personally didn’t have!), in order to cut deals with some local Chiefs and government officials, all of whom had some stake in OGTF, and whose palms must be greased in order to enable him to secure the funds.

As Time magazine pointed out, those who fell prey to Blay-Miezah were not some wacky illiterate individuals, but highly intelligent and educated professionals. There is a general belief among westerners that Africa’s leaders especially in the immediate post-independence era were corrupt. Therefore no matter how zany Blay-Miezah’s story sounded, people found it hard to discount.

A corrupt African ruler had stolen millions from his country’s treasury and stashed the money in Swiss banks. The story had a familiar ring to it. And con-men adopted the story to rake in millions from the gullible and the greedy.

By the mid-1980’s when the gullible investors had not received a penny on their contributions, and local law enforcement authorities in Philadelphia had been alerted to Blay-Miezah’s con-game, Blay-Miezah was happily ensconced in a posh mansion in London where he was safely protected under diplomatic immunity.

When Blay Miezah arrived in Ghana during General Acheampong’s military regime (about 1975), he conned the government into believing his story. Mr. Ebenezer M. Debrah who had served as Ghana’s ambassador to the United States, and was quite aware of Blay-Miezah’s machinations, was the secretary to the military government of the National Redemption Council.

Reports at the time indicated that Mr. Debrah provided a dossier on the criminal activities of Blay-Miezah and strongly warned the government to stay clear of the man.

However, Blay-Miezah’s story had made such an imprint on the Ghanaian psyche, and the man laundered money so much so that, Debrah was seen as an impediment to Ghana receiving a windfall. Mr. Debrah was sacked as Secretary to the government. Blay Miezah’s public relations machine was quite effective, and it included stalwarts in the Nkrumah regime such as the impressive Krobo Edusei and Kwasi Amoako-Attah a former Minister of Finance.

With his main antagonist out of the way, Blay-Miezah successfully sold his story to the government and then claimed that he could only retrieve the money if a diplomatic passport was issued to him. In reality, his acquisition of the diplomatic passport provided immunity and cover from outside prosecution. Consequently, when a criminal case pertaining to the fraud was brought against him in the United States of America in the 1980’s, Blay-Miezah could not be extradited to Philadelphia to face charges relating to financial extortion and other crimes. Blay-Miezah’s diplomatic passport would be renewed by the PNDC military government which ruled Ghana from 1981-1992.

Thus, the late Ed Bradley had to go to London to interview Blay-Miezah for the American CBS TV station’s 60 Minutes investigative report. The Americans wondered how the African could come up with such a well-crafted story to outwit these highly educated, professional white Americans?

The master stroke however, was Blay-Miezah’s insistence that the interview with 60 Minutes could not commence unless Bradley provided the best gin for Blay-Miezah to invoke the spirit of his ancestors, by purifying his Stool, the symbol of his traditional authority, and the embodiment of the souls of his ancestors! Bradley looked on rather bemused as Blay-Miezah gargled a mouthful of the liquor and then released powerful sprays 3-times onto the ancestral Stool!

As one elderly Jewish woman who had invested his lifetime savings in the OGTF, and who appeared on the program wondered: How could Blay-Miezah not be rich, and be the beneficiary of such huge largesse when he accommodated the investors in posh most exclusive hotels in London, Geneva, and Paris. Of course, Blay-Miezah could afford exquisite entertainment for his investors because he was using their money!! Blay-Miezah himself did not have a dime to his name by himself. No wonder, Ed Bradley said that of all the con men he had been involved with, Blay-Miezah was “clearly head and shoulders above the rest . . . the best con man I’ve ever seen in my life.”

When Blay-Miezah concocted his scheme and defrauded the gullible and greedy investors of their hard-earned money, the scheme was largely anonymous. Today, thanks to the Internet and massive participation by Nigerian fraudsters, the scheme is called 419, so-called after the section of Nigeria’s legal code dealing with financial scam.

Kumawood star Maame Serwaa denies plans to get married

Ghanaian Kumawood actress Clara Benson, AKA Maame Serwaa has rejected suggestions that she is planning to walk down the aisle and tie the knot with her boyfriend.

The Serwaa Nyarko old student claims she is too young to make such decisions and wants to focus on her education.

“Salinko, am focusing on my education and how to educate young teenagers especially girls to adhere themselves from pregnancies and abortion. Marriage is God’s creation, but am not ready to get married anytime soon, ” She said on UTV.

“I’m not snobbish. I may not have met the people spreading this rumour in person, and they may be saying that because I haven’t engaged them personally, but when they get to meet me, they will change their perception.
“Yes there have been some changes in my life, in terms of how I look and all that but it is simply because I now have a team that takes branding very seriously.

Although many ladies at her age have been struggling to live a decent life after attaining stardom, Serwaa believes she won’t follow that lifestyle just to stay relevant.

“I can handle fame and I have been handling it since my career began as a child so there is no way I will do something that will bring shame to the people around me. I don’t drink nor smoke, I am not someone who likes to go clubbing and all that.

“The people I work with run my life and my late mom taught me a lot of things about life. If not for anything at all, for the love I have for my late mother, I need to live right so that I can make her proud,” she added.

Jordan Ayew ends 2018 without a goal for Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace striker Jordan Ayew could not end the year 2018 on a high note as his goal drought continued after his side’s1-0 home defeat to Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday.

The 27-year-old, who joined from Swansea City on a season-long loan in August, was an unused substitute and never had the opportunity to break his duck.

Roy Hodgson started the game with Wilfred Zaha and Andros Townsend upfront with support from Ghanaian Jeffrey Schlupp. After N’golo Kante shot Chelsea into the lead in the second half, Hodgson opted to bring on Connor Wickham and Max Meyer for Schlupp and Cheikhou Kouyate respectively, leaving Ayew on the bench.

Out of 19 games in the first half of the Premier League season, Ayew featured 12 times, including eight starts and four times as a substitute. He spent 668 minutes on the field without a goal.

He was caught offside on seven occasions, won 16 tackles and had only one shot on target for Palace as Hodgson’s men continue their battle for relegation survival.

According to reports in the English media, Ayew could see his loan cut short and return to Swansea in January as Palace are weighing options to sign Liverpool striker Dominic Solanke to add up to Christian Benteke who is returning from injury.

Palace will begin the New Year with a visit to Molineux Stadium to face Wolverhampton Wanderers on January 2.
