The Black Stars former skipper has insisted that he felt betrayed after his captain’s armband was taken from him prior to the tournament

Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan says he felt betrayed by former Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations held in Egypt.

Prior to the start of the tournament, Gyan was unceremoniously stripped off his captain’s armband and made a general captain.

Andre Ayew was then named as a the new captain and that generated a lot of controversies around the them. As a result, Ghana president Nana Akufo-Addo had to intervene at a point before Gyan was named among the squad for the competition.

And the former Al Ain star believes he wasn’t expecting such a decision from Kwesi Appiah at that crucial moment.

“I felt betrayed [when the captain’s armband was taken from me in 2019],” Gyan told Asaase Radio in an interview.

“So I couldn’t control my emotions. People who know everything behind the scenes, know I was betrayed [by the coach],” he added.

At the tournament, Ghana suffered one of their worst performance as they were eliminated in the round of 16 by Tunisia.

Gyan also failed to score in the tournament for the first time since 2008.

Gyan, who is yet to launch a book about his career, is currently a free agent after mutually parting ways with Ghana Premier League side Legon Cities last year.
