South Africa president Jacob Zuma has officially stepped down from office on Wednesday.

The 75-year-old who had being in office since 2009, came under intense pressure to hand over to ANC’s new leader Cyril Ramaphosa, who also happened to be the deputy president or face vote of no confidence from parliament.

And he finally gave in to the demands on Wednesday evening in a live address on national television.

“I have resigned today. I have served the people of South Africa to the best of my ability,” he said.

“I fear no motion of no confidence or impeachment … I will continue to serve the people of South Africa and the ANC. I will dedicate my life to continuing to work for the execution of the policies of our organisation.”

“No life should be lost in my name. The ANC should never been divided in my name. I have therefore come to the decision to resign as president of the republic with immediate effect,” he added.

Zuma visited Ghana once as a president of South Africa in 2013 when John Dramani was also in office.
