The Black Stars coach has lauded the qualities of the new goalkeeper following his maiden appearance against the Warriors on Saturday

Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac has heaped praise on new Black Stars goalkeeper Joseph ‘Jojo’ Wollacot following his impressive debut in the 3-1 victory against Zimbabwe in the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers on Saturday.

The 25-year-old was handed a surprise starting role ahead of Lawrence Ati-Zigi, Hearts goalkeeper Richard Attah and Asante Kotoko youngster Danlad Ibrahim after first-choice goalkeeper Richard Ofori was ruled out due to injury concerns.

Although, Wollacot conceded a goal from a spot kick, he made some incredible saves and organised the defence very well and Milovan has insisted that he deserved the chance given him.

“It’s all about good scouting. Since he arrived in camp, he proved himself at the training sessions and everyone was impressed,” Milovan Rajevac told reporters after the game.

“He did very well against Zimbabwe and deserves the chance [to always start for Ghana]. I was satisfied with his performance in today’s game. I don’t want to praise him much but he did a good job for the team,” he added.

Wallocott opted to sign for English lower division side Swindon Town from Championship aide Bristol City last season in order to get more playing time.

This season, the shot-stopper has played ten games and kept four clean sheets as well as conceded eights goals in the process as Swindon Town sit third on the League 2 table.

Wollacot is expected to maintain his place in the Ghana squad when they play Zimbabwe in the return fixture in Harare on Tuesday. South Africa lead Ghana one point in Group G as they have seven points.

They will also host Ethiopia at the Soccer City Sports Stadium in Johannesburg on Tuesday as they hope to complete a double over them.
