The supporters were in a high spirit as they left Yaounde on Tuesday afternoon enroute to Garoua to cheer the Black Stars on to victory

A high powered Ghanaian supporters left Yaounde on Tuesday afternoon to Garoua to throw their weight behind the Black Stars ahead of the last game in Group C of 2021 Africa Cup of Nations against Comoros.

The Black Stars, who have suffered a slow start to the tournament, must grind results against the debutants in Garoua to progress despite missing some notable players.

After losing 1-0 on opening day against Morocco and sharing the spoils 1-1 with Gabon last week, Ghana must defeat Comoros at all cost to either finish as runners up or one of the four best third place teams in the tournament.

Although, the supporters were a little skeptical earlier as some raised concerns about the tactics and substitutions by coach Milovan Rajevac, the mood was later charged before they took off. The supporters were initially scheduled to travel by road for 18 hours but quick arrangements by African Origin Travel and Tours made it possible for them to go by a flight.

However, Ghana must do the job without some players including Kudus Mohammed who is not even in camp. The Ajax Amsterdam midfielder was named in the 28-man squad for the tournament but has failed to report due to injury concerns.

Although, Ghana’s technical team were optimistic he will recover on time to play part of the tournament, Ajax coach Erik Ten Hag has revealed that it will be strange for the youngster to arrive in Cameroon since he is still unfit.

Also, reports gathered by AshesGyamera indicate that striker Richmond Boakye Yiadom has been sidelined from the matchday squad although he is in camp and also not injured unlike Kudus. Our sources have revealed that the player has been punished on disciplinary grounds as he flouted some rules in camp

According to reports few hours before kick off, some deliberations are still ongoing to have the Beiter Jerusalem striker to be part since striker Benjamin Tetteh has been banned three games by CAF.

Interestingly, Real Tamale United midfielder David Abagna Sandan has been ruled out of the tournament due to injury concerns. The midfielder, who is yet to make his bow at the tournament, picked up a foot injury at training and it will take a miracle for him to feature for Ghana even if they progress from the group.

Moreover, Real Mallorca midfielder Baba Iddrisu is out of the game per our sources from the team’s camp. The box-to-box midfielder sat out of the Black Stars’ last training on Monday evening after failing to recover from the injury he sustained against Gabon on Friday. In his absence, Sherif Tilarspol midfielder Edmund Addo is expected to fill the void and partner Arsenal star Thomas Partey in the midfield.

Lastly, Wakaso Mubarak who missed the games against Morocco and Gabon is still nursing a minor injury and would not play a part of the game against Comoros.

The defensive midfielder’s absence is a major concern to Milovan Rajevac since Baba Iddrisu will be missed.

Why Boakye Yiadom and five other players are expected to miss Ghana’s game against Comoros

The Black Stars must grind results on Tuesday against Comoros in Garoua but these players are expected not to play part of the fixture due to various reasons

Ghana has been dealt a big blow as they will miss several key players as they face Comoros in the final game of Group C in the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday in Garoua.

The Black Stars were defeated on opening day by Morocco and shared the spoils with Gabon in the next game which has left them in a tight corner ahead of the last group game.

As a result, the four-time African champions must defeat Comoros to stand a chance of progressing from the group but they must do it without some key players due to several reasons.

First on the list is Kudus Mohammed, who is not even in camp.

Also, reports gathered indicate that striker Richmond Boakye Yiadom has been sidelined from the matchday squad although he is in camp and also not injured unlike Kudus.

Barring any last minute intervention by the team’s top hierarchy, Yiadom is expected to sit out of the game.

Lastly, Wakaso Mubarak who missed the games against Morocco and Gabon is still nursing a minor injury and would not play a part of the game against Comoros.

The defensive midfielder’s absence is a major concern to Milovan Rajevac since Baba Iddrisu will also be missed.

Since 2008, Ghana has made it out of the group stages in the Africa Cup of Nations and has reached the final on two occasions.

Semester system at the basic level has come to stay – GES

Despite the agitations by the Teacher Unions, Ghana Education Service insists the semester based academic calendar will not be abolished

The Ghana Education Service, GES, has indicated that the newly-introduced semester-based academic calendar for public Kindergarten, Primary, and Junior High Schools has come to stay.

Speaking to Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show, the Deputy Director-General for Quality and Access of the Ghana Education Service, Dr. Kwabena Tandoh, said the system will help ease pressure on teachers, decongest the various schools, and help align academic calendars.

“We know based on research that one of the causes of classroom absenteeism among teachers in the various schools was because some teachers sought to upgrade themselves. This is because the three-term system in the basic schools overlaps with the university system. Gradually, we are getting to the point where we can align. We are giving teachers the time, by aligning their system with the university systems to upgrade if need be.”

“Recent research in Greater Accra showed that because primary schools had a different calendar from the Junior High Schools, parents could not align. Research also showed that because the primary school children had a different timetable from the Junior High Schools when the latter was in session, attendance went down by 11%.”

He also noted that the basic school students, per the new arrangements, will spend 40 out of the 52 weeks in a year in the classroom

“When we were doing the term system, they were in school between 13 and 15 weeks per term. In this system, they will only be in school for not more than 10 weeks per time. This initial one is only because we are trying to align the timetables.”

“The mid-semester breaks, if we add the weekends will be 10 days per semester. In all, they will be in school for 20 weeks a semester and 40 weeks per year,” he added.

Additionally, he believes the semester system will go a long way to relieve busy parents or guardians of the pressure of juggling between work and parenting.

He further indicated that the semester system in the basic schools is “here to stay.”

“It is the new normal. We are not just introducing it to align the timetables at the various levels.”

Basic school calendar
Second and third-year students in second-cycle schools will be heading back to school on February 7, 2022.

According to a Ghana Education Service release, the first years have a tentative reopening date of April 4, 2022.

All students in basic schools will return to school on January 18.

The delays in releasing the reopening date had caused concern among stakeholders because private schools had begun their academic work.

Emmanuel Gyasi silences AC Milan with last-gasp winner at San Siro; reminds Milovan what he’s missing at Afcon

The Ghanaian midfielder left it late to snatch the winner for Spezia at the San Siro on Monday evening

Ghana midfielder Emmanuel Gyasi stole the headlines in Italy as he scored the winner when Spezia Calcio shocked AC Milan in a 2-1 victory at San Siro on Monday evening.

The 28-year-old was handed a starting role on the right wing and was impressive throughout the game as he tracked back most often to support right-back Kevin Amian.

Milan missed a penalty through Theo Hernandez by the 44th minute but Rafael Leão scored the opener a minute later following a defensive mixup.

After the break, Milan missed several opportunities and Spezia made them rued the missed chances.

Kevin Agudelo pulled even for Spezia on 64th minute after he combined with Danielle Verde.

Deep in additional time, Spezia striker Viktor Kovalenko latched on to a pass and initiated a quick counterattack as he raced into the Milan box.

Kovalenko held his composure and laid a pass to Gyasi who slotted in the ball to break the hearts of the Milan faithfuls.

Spezia have move three places up to 14th position with 22 points after the victory while Milan’s title challenge has been dealt a big blow as the sit second with 48 points, two points behind city rivals Inter Milan who have a game in hand.

Legon Cities 0-0 Bechem United: Wasteful Augustine Okrah denies Hunters first away win in the Capital City

The former Premier League topscorer could not make the numerous opportunities count as Bechem failed in their attempt to win their first away game of the season

Legon Cities shared the spoils goalless with Bechem United on matchday thirteen of Ghana Premier League at the El Wak Sports Stadium in Accra on Monday.

After failing to record a win in their previous two visits against Great Olympics and Hearts of Oak, Bechem were poised to rewrite the story this time around against Legon who have been struggling to grind results especially at home.

It was Bechem who had the first chance at goal when Augustine Okrah was released by Francis Twene early in the game but the former Asante Kotoko forward saw his feeble shot saved by Legon goalkeeper William Emmanuel Essu.

Bechem thought they have been awarded a penalty when Legon defender Mohammed Issaka appeared to have handled the ball inside his box but the referee insisted it was outside the box.

Okrah fluffed yet another opportunity to put Bechem ahead as his shot went straight to goalkeeper Essu.

Croster Obuor Adu teared away from his marker and created a chance for Legon by the 33rd minute but his final pass to his teammate to score was blocked by Bechem defender Osei Kuffour.

Okrah was played through once again after the break but the forward failed to beat onrushing goalkeeper Essu after coming one-on-one with him.

Late in the game, Twene out-muscled his marker on the left flank but the youngster could not locate his teammate for a tap in.

Bechem are still fifth on the log with 22 points, five points behind Asante Kotoko while Legon have now moved to 13th position with 14 points, one point above relegation zone.

‘Ghana lacks quality striker like Asamoah Gyan for 2021 Afcon,’ Milovan tells Ghanaians to lower expectations.

The Serbian has suggested that Ghanaians should lower their expectations since the Black Stars lack a potential striker like Asamoah Gyan

Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac has advised Ghanaians to lower expectations as the Black Stars seek to gain qualification from the group stage of the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

The Black Stars have struggled in the two games played so far and are yet to record a win after losing to Morocco and sharing the spoils with Gabon.

However, they must defeat Comoros in the final game of the group to stand a chance of progressing to the round of 16 as either runners up of Group C or one of the best four third-place countries.

And Milovan believes the squad in-depth cannot be likened to that of 2010 where the Black Stars reached the final of the Afcon and quarterfinals of Fifa World Cup since the team lacks potent strikers like Asamoah Gyan.

“We don’t have a player like Asamoah Gyan. We don’t have that type of a player to change things for the team with small chance,” Milovan said ahead of the game on Tuesday.

“Communication is not a problem and they understand me very well. The problem is just that we didn’t have enough time to prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations. We don’t have the same team like 2010. Not enough time for preparations,” he added.

Ghana sit third of Group C with a point and any results apart from a win against Comoros will see them exiting the tournament earlier than expected.

‘Current squad can’t be compared to Black Stars of 2010,’ says Milovan Rajevac ahead of Comoros game

The Black Stars boss has reiterated that the current crop of players can’t be compared to the side he first led to make the country proud

Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac has suggested that the current crop of players lack quality as compared to the team he once coached for 2010 Africa Cup of Nations and 2010 Fifa World Cup held in South Africa.

The 68-year-old Serbian tactician has come under intense pressure following the Black Stars poor start to the Afcon ongoing in Cameroon.

Ghana, after two games are yet to pick a win and currently sit third of Group C log. The four-time champions need a win at all cost against Comoros in the final Group game on Tuesday in order to stand a chance of making it to the next stage.

Although, a section of Ghanaians have raised concerns about his inability to communicate with the players in English Language and rather pass on information through his interpreter, Milovan says that has never been a problem

“Communication is not a problem and they understand me very well,” Milovan said at the pre-match conference ahead of Tuesday’s game.

“The problem is just that we didn’t have enough time to prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations. We don’t have the same team like 2010. Not enough time for preparations,” he added.

Milovan further stressed that Ghana lacks a potent striker like former captain Asamoah Gyan who can change the outcome of a game with even a half chance.

“We don’t have a player like Asamoah Gyan. We don’t have that type of a player to change things for the team with small chance,” he said.

“It was never a penalty,” Prosper Ogum reacts to Jones Akubiem’s controversial call against Kotoko

The Porcupine Warriors boss has added his voice to the controversial penalty that was awarded against his charges last weekend

Asante Kotoko coach Dr. Prosper Ogum Narteh has insisted that referee Jones Akubiem was wrong to have awarded a penalty against his side in the game with Berekum Chelsea at the Golden City Park on Saturday.

The Porcupine Warriors shared the spoils goalless with Chelsea but they had to rely on goalkeeper Danlad Ibrahim to to salvage the point.

Very late in the game, referee Akubiem awarded a penalty to Chelsea after insisting that Kofi Owusu’s shot was blocked by Yussif Mubarik’s hand in the box.

However, Stephen Anokye Badu’s resulting kick from the spot was perfectly saved by Danlad.

“You [journalist] have said it that the ball hit the stomach so if you are telling me this, then it means my thoughts are right because you had the opportunity to watch the replay,” Ogum said after the game.

“So if you are telling me that the ball hit the stomach, then it means it was never a penalty. You are telling me so I’m basing on what you said,”

Ogum also heaped praise on Danlad and revealed that he spoke to the young shot-stopper before the penalty was taken.

“I was very confident. I you saw me, I called Danlad and spoke to him. I told him to keep his calm, watch the ball and pick his spot and that was exactly what he did to save the penalty. He was good and saved us from defeat,” he said.

Kotoko despite the stalemate with Chelsea are still leading the Premier League table with 27 points, three points above Aduana Stars who also shared the spoils 1-1 with Accra Lions.

Kotoko have one outstanding game against rivals Hearts of Oak and it has been scheduled for February 20 at the Accra Sports Stadium.
