“I’ll not resign, I want to qualify Ghana to 2022 World Cup,” says Milovan Rajevac

Having failed to qualify the Black Stars out of their group at the Afcon, the Serbian coach insists that his job is not on the line

Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac has stressed he will not offer his resignation despite the Black Stars experiencing their worst ever performance at the Africa Cup of Nations since 2006.

Ghana failed to win any of their three games at the 2021 Afcon and bowed out of the tournament at the bottom of Group C having lost to Morocco and Comoros and sharing the spoils with Gabon.

However, Milovan believes he still has an unfinished business with the Black Stars as he feels he is still the right man to qualify them to the 2022 Fifa World Cup to be staged in Qatar later this year.

“I’m not leaving. I want to stay and qualify Ghana to the World Cup,” Milovan said after the defeat to Comoros.

“We didn’t start the game against Comoros how we wanted and we conceded an early goal. It was a poor start for us and and then the red card to Andre Ayew changed everything. I think Comoros deserved this win because they played very well than us,” he added.

Ghana has qualified to the final round of the World Cup qualifiers and would know their opponents in March after a draw by Caf.

Ghana were shockingly defeated 3-2 by Comoros in the final game in Group C of 2021 Africa Cup of Nations ongoing in Garoua, Cameroon on Tuesday.

The Black Stars need a win at all cost to progress to the knockout stage either as the runners up of the group or one of the best four third-place countries but failed to make the most out of the opportunity.

E. F. B. Nabouhane shot Comoros into the lead very early in the game as he connected a pass from I. Youssouf to put the minnows in front by the fourth minute.

Ghana’s woes were compounded after skipper Andre Ayew was sent off off on 25th minute following a rush challenge on the Comoros goalkeeper.

After the break, Comoros doubled their lead on 64th minute through Ahmed Mogni and looked like they were heading into

However, substitute Richmond Boakye Yiadom pulled one back for Ghana by the 64th minute with a powerful header.

Strasbourg defender Alexander Djiku pulled even for the Black Stars by the 76th minute after he tapped in from a Partey’s header as Ghana pushed men forward in search of the winner.

Comoros capitalised on the Black Stars high pressing game and Ahmed Mogni scored his second of the day to break the hearts of the Ghanaians.

Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac has made three changes in the squad to face Comoros in the last game of Group C of 2021 Africa Cup of Nations ongoing in Cameroon.

Reading defender Andy Yiadom has been benched following his poor defending that led to the equalizer by Gabon in the 1-1 stalemate last week.

In his absence, Dreams FC defender Philimon Baffour has been surprisingly given the chance to fill the void and prove to Ghanaians why he has always been called to the national team.

In midfield, Sherif Tilarspol midfielder Edmund Addo starts alongside Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey after Baba Iddrisu failed to recover from the hamstring injury he sustained against Gabon.

Also, Fatawu Issahaku of Dreams FC will start the game for the first time in the tournament after Kamaldeen Sulemana was benched due to poor run of performance.

After losing 1-0 on opening day against Morocco and sharing the spoils 1-1 with Gabon last week, Ghana must defeat Comoros at all cost to either finish as runners up or one of the four best third place teams in the tournament.

Although, the supporters were a little skeptical earlier as some raised concerns about the tactics and substitutions by coach Milovan Rajevac, the mood was later charged before they took off. The supporters were initially scheduled to travel by road for 18 hours but quick arrangements by African Origin Travel and Tours made it possible for them to go by a flight.

However, Ghana must do the job without some players including Kudus Mohammed who is not even in camp. The Ajax Amsterdam midfielder was named in the 28-man squad for the tournament but has failed to report due to injury concerns.

Although, Ghana’s technical team were optimistic he will recover on time to play part of the tournament, Ajax coach Erik Ten Hag has revealed that it will be strange for the youngster to arrive in Cameroon since he is still unfit.

Also, reports gathered by AshesGyamera indicate that striker Richmond Boakye Yiadom has been sidelined from the matchday squad although he is in camp and also not injured unlike Kudus. Our sources have revealed that the player has been punished on disciplinary grounds as he flouted some rules in camp

According to reports few hours before kick off, some deliberations are still ongoing to have the Beiter Jerusalem striker to be part since striker Benjamin Tetteh has been banned three games by CAF.

Interestingly, Real Tamale United midfielder David Abagna Sandan has been ruled out of the tournament due to injury concerns. The midfielder, who is yet to make his bow at the tournament, picked up a foot injury at training and it will take a miracle for him to feature for Ghana even if they progress from the group.

Moreover, Real Mallorca midfielder Baba Iddrisu is out of the game per our sources from the team’s camp. The box-to-box midfielder sat out of the Black Stars’ last training on Monday evening after failing to recover from the injury he sustained against Gabon on Friday. In his absence, Sherif Tilarspol midfielder Edmund Addo is expected to fill the void and partner Arsenal star Thomas Partey in the midfield.

Lastly, Wakaso Mubarak who missed the games against Morocco and Gabon is still nursing a minor injury and would not play a part of the game against Comoros.

The defensive midfielder’s absence is a major concern to Milovan Rajevac since Baba Iddrisu will be missed.

Why Boakye Yiadom and five other players are expected to miss Ghana’s game against Comoros

The Black Stars must grind results on Tuesday against Comoros in Garoua but these players are expected not to play part of the fixture due to various reasons

Ghana has been dealt a big blow as they will miss several key players as they face Comoros in the final game of Group C in the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday in Garoua.

The Black Stars were defeated on opening day by Morocco and shared the spoils with Gabon in the next game which has left them in a tight corner ahead of the last group game.

As a result, the four-time African champions must defeat Comoros to stand a chance of progressing from the group but they must do it without some key players due to several reasons.

First on the list is Kudus Mohammed, who is not even in camp.

Also, reports gathered indicate that striker Richmond Boakye Yiadom has been sidelined from the matchday squad although he is in camp and also not injured unlike Kudus.

Barring any last minute intervention by the team’s top hierarchy, Yiadom is expected to sit out of the game.

Lastly, Wakaso Mubarak who missed the games against Morocco and Gabon is still nursing a minor injury and would not play a part of the game against Comoros.

The defensive midfielder’s absence is a major concern to Milovan Rajevac since Baba Iddrisu will also be missed.

Since 2008, Ghana has made it out of the group stages in the Africa Cup of Nations and has reached the final on two occasions.

Semester system at the basic level has come to stay – GES

Despite the agitations by the Teacher Unions, Ghana Education Service insists the semester based academic calendar will not be abolished

The Ghana Education Service, GES, has indicated that the newly-introduced semester-based academic calendar for public Kindergarten, Primary, and Junior High Schools has come to stay.

Speaking to Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show, the Deputy Director-General for Quality and Access of the Ghana Education Service, Dr. Kwabena Tandoh, said the system will help ease pressure on teachers, decongest the various schools, and help align academic calendars.

“We know based on research that one of the causes of classroom absenteeism among teachers in the various schools was because some teachers sought to upgrade themselves. This is because the three-term system in the basic schools overlaps with the university system. Gradually, we are getting to the point where we can align. We are giving teachers the time, by aligning their system with the university systems to upgrade if need be.”

“Recent research in Greater Accra showed that because primary schools had a different calendar from the Junior High Schools, parents could not align. Research also showed that because the primary school children had a different timetable from the Junior High Schools when the latter was in session, attendance went down by 11%.”

He also noted that the basic school students, per the new arrangements, will spend 40 out of the 52 weeks in a year in the classroom

“When we were doing the term system, they were in school between 13 and 15 weeks per term. In this system, they will only be in school for not more than 10 weeks per time. This initial one is only because we are trying to align the timetables.”

“The mid-semester breaks, if we add the weekends will be 10 days per semester. In all, they will be in school for 20 weeks a semester and 40 weeks per year,” he added.

Additionally, he believes the semester system will go a long way to relieve busy parents or guardians of the pressure of juggling between work and parenting.

He further indicated that the semester system in the basic schools is “here to stay.”

“It is the new normal. We are not just introducing it to align the timetables at the various levels.”

Basic school calendar
Second and third-year students in second-cycle schools will be heading back to school on February 7, 2022.

According to a Ghana Education Service release, the first years have a tentative reopening date of April 4, 2022.

All students in basic schools will return to school on January 18.

The delays in releasing the reopening date had caused concern among stakeholders because private schools had begun their academic work.
