Bartomeu resigns as Barcelona president as Messi achieves his dream

The Barca boss has left his post amid ongoing criticism and a looming vote of no confidence

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has resigned with the entire board also stepping down from their posts.

Bartomeu’s decisions come after several months of criticism in the wake of Barcelona’s 8-2 Champions League elimination to Bayern Munich as well as Lionel Messi’s shocking request to leave the club shortly after.

Although the club was able to keep hold of Messi, with the longtime Barca star staying to avoid having to take the club to court, Bartomeu’s position has been under scrutiny for weeks,.

The president had been due to officially end his tenure next year with elections called for March, but the club’s members called for a vote of no confidence in an effort to get Bartomeu out immediately.

A total of 20,687 votes were gathered for the motion against Bartomeu, passing the threshold of 16,250 signatures required for the vote to go ahead.

The Barca board repeatedly tried to suspend or postpone the vote but, on Monday, local authorities rejected the club’s push to delay the proceedings.

As a result, the vote was set to go ahead in the coming weeks, but will no longer be necessary as Bartomeu and the board step down.
Bartomeu originally joined Barca during Joan Laporta’s presidency, and he ascended to the role himself in January 2014.

He replaced Sandro Rosell, becoming the fortieth President of Barcelona as he signed on to complete the rest of Rosell’s tenure following his resignation.

During his time in charge, Barca won La Liga four times as well as the 2014-15 Champions League, but his tenure will largely be defined by the club’s failings in his final seasons.

Having struggled in the transfer market since Neymar’s departure to join Paris Saint-Germain, Barca finished the 2019-20 season trophyless.
Their 8-2 loss to Bayern only furthered unrest, with Messi’s request to leave proving the final straw for the president.

Messi said in September that Bartomeu “did not keep his word”, with former Barca star Luis Suarez saying that he believes Messi will stay at Barca if a new board arrives.

Bartomeu said on Monday that he believed that Messi could lead Barca to titles this season, admitting that he could not let the Argentine leave for the good of the club.

And now, it is Bartomeu that is leaving, as he ends his time in charge of Barca after nearly seven years.

Barcelona are set to face Juventus on Wednesday in the Champions League.

Asante Kotoko fail to win second pre-season friendly in Koforidua

The Porcupines failed to make it two wins in a row as they shared the spoils with a lower tier side in Koforidua

Ghana Premier League record winners Asante Kotoko failed to record their second victory as part of their pre-season when they shared the spoils 2-2 with with Akosombo-based Division One League side Krystal Palace at the All Nation University school Park on Tuesday.

Maxwell Konadu’s charges were billed to play a friendly on Saturday but it was called off in the eleventh hour before arrangements were made to test the players’ performances against Palace.

An early goal by midfielder Adom Frimpong by the seventh minute gave Kotoko a perfect start before Naby Keita doubled the lead from the spot on the 30th minute after deputy captain Emmanuel Gyamfi was brought down in the box by his marker.

After the break, Kotoko made several changes in their squad which gave their opponents the chance to improve and pull one back against the run of play.

With few minutes to full time, Krystal Palace benefited from a defensive blunder and snatched an equaliser to the dismay of Kotoko coach Konadu.

AshesGyamera.com understands that Kotoko could play another friendly on either Friday or Saturday as they gradually seek to wrap up their tour to the Eastern region.

Kotoko, who won their first pre-seasongame 3-0 against Odweanoma FC, will open their GPL account with a home game against Techiman Eleven Wonders on November 15 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Kotoko weren’t benefiting from Strike deal, Club Consult can seek redress in court, says Benefo

The spokesperson of the Porcupine Warriors has insisted that they took the right decision by terminating the kits sponsorship deal with Club Consult Africa

Asante Kotoko director of communications Moses Antwi Benefo has reiterated that the club’s legal team did no wrong by advising management to mutually terminate the kit sponsorship deal with Club Consult Africa.

Kotoko used jerseys from Strike for the 2019/20 Ghana Premier League and Caf Champions League and they were brought to the club through Club Consult. Reports suggest that Kotoko were making only one cedi per each sale, something that new chief executive officer Nana Yaw Amponsah saw as a poor deal after taking over from the erstwhile administration.

“We handed all existing contracts to our legal team for reviews. We are ready to maintain those that Kotoko benefit from and terminate those that the club doesn’t earn anything from it,” Benefo told Hello FM.

“Kotoko had a contract with Club Consult Africa and not Strike. They were to purchase kits and training apparels for Kotoko.”

“After reviewing the contract with Club Consult Africa, we saw that it was not going to help Kotoko in any way so the contract was unilaterally terminated.

“They can go to court for redress. Now we have taken the decision and we are ready to welcome any decision from Club Consult Africa. Whatever comes up will be channelled to our legal team,” he added.

Kotoko have now signed a three-year contract with European kit manufacturing company Errea and reports in the local media suggest it is an improved deal as compared to the one which the club had with Strike through Club Consult.
