Meet the seven Black Stars players that did not travel to South Africa because of COVID-19 scare

The Black Stars touched down in Johannesburg from Accra on Saturday evening without these seven players due to Covid-19 restrictions

Ghana coach Charles Kwablah Akonnor will have to stick to his plan B when Black Stars face South Africa on Monday in the second game in Group G of the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers in Johannesburg.

The Black Stars narrowly defeated Ethiopia 1-0 in the opening game on Friday in Cape Coast thanks to Wakaso Mubarak’s long range effort that went through the hands of goalkeeper Tekelemariam Shanko.

However, Akonnor will have to alter his squad that started the game against Ethiopia because players who ply their trade in England and Germany cannot travel to South Africa. This is because the country has been marked red as one of the countries in Africa with serious Covid-19 cases.

As a result, defender Daniel Amartey, Abdul Baba Rahman, Andy Yiadom, Jordan Ayew and Jeffrey Schlupp who started the game against Ethiopia will not travel with the rest of the team. Schlupp, in particular, picked up a hamstring injury and was substituted in the game will need further assessment before he leaves to his club Crystal Palace.

The others to be excused include Daniel Kofi Kyere who marked his debut against Ethiopia aster coming on as a first half substitute and Stade Rennes midfielder Kamaldeen Sulemana.

This means that Akonnor will have to give chance to some of the local players called into the team like Hearts of Oak trio of goalkeeper Richard Attah, defender Fatawu Mohammed and midfielder Afriyie Barnieh and Asante Kotoko defender Abdul Ganiu Ismail.

Former Asante Kotoko striker Kwame Opoku who currently play for USM Alger in Algeria could partner Andre Ayew upfront in the absence of Jordan Ayew, while Spezia Calcio winger Emmanuel Gyasi may see some game time after missing the game on Friday.

Yaw Yeboah could start against South Africa after his inspiring performance when he came on against the Walias Antelopes.

The Black Stars currently top Group G with three points, two points above South Africa after the latter shared the spoils goalless with Zimbabwe in their opening game.

The Black Stars trained at the FNB Sports Stadium on Saturday with 25 players of which 23 will be selected for the game.

Andre Ayew satisfied with Black Stars performance against Ethiopia in World Cup qualifiers

The Black Stars skipper believes three points is enough to give them a head start in the country’s quest to qualify to the next World Cup

Ghana captain Andre Ayew has suggested that Black Stars did well to defeat Ethiopia in the opening game of Group G of the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.

Wakaso Mubarak’s first half long range shot was all that the Black Stars need to defeat the Walias and top the table after first round of matches.

However, majority of Ghanaians were not impressed with the general performance of the team amid the victory especially defender Abdul Baba Rahman, Jordan Ayew and Jeffrey Schlupp.

In spite of the complaints, Ayew believes the players did their best especially when they played in front of few Ghanaian supporters due to Covid-19 restrictions.

“Three points. Nothing comes easy,” Ayew posted on Twitter.

“Not a full stadium but great atmosphere. We thank all Ghanaians for the support and love. we keep going,” Ayew added.

The Black Stars will leave Accra to Johannesburg, South Africa on Saturday to prepare for the next game against Bafana Bafana at the Soccer City Sports Stadium on Monday.

Four players who started the game against Ethiopia will not make the trip to South Africa due to Covid-19 scare. They include Jordan Ayew, Jeffrey Schlupp, Andy Yiadom and Daniel Amartey. These players ply their trade in England and with South Africa being named among the countries with red flag for COVID-19 cases by the British government, they will be excused.

Ghana defeated Ethiopia 1-0 in Group G’s first game of the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers on Friday at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium.

Andre Ayew on the move

With Zimbabwe earlier sharing the spoils goalless against South Africa at home, the Black Stars were in dire need of a win to secure top spot in the group.

Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Richard Ofori started in post while Andy Yiadom, Baba Abdul Rahman, Daniel Amartey and Alexander Djiku were the back four sitting in front of him.

Wakaso Mubarak and Real Mallorca midfielder Baba Iddrisu teamed up with Kamaldeen Sulemana and Jeffrey Schlupp in midfield. In attack, it was the Ayew brothers who led pushed upfront in search of goals for the Black Stars.

On the seventh minute, Wakaso Mubarak skied his effort before Andre Ayew headed wide a cross from his junior brother Jordan five minutes later.

On 22nd minute, Andre Ayew meandered his way through the Ethiopians’ box but his last ditch shot was blocked by an opponent and the danger was later cleared.

Five minutes later, Crystal Palace midfielder Jeffrey Schlupp picked up a calf injury and was substituted for Daniel Kyereh to make his debut appearance for Ghana.

The Black Stars finally found the opener by the 35th minute mark. The former Deportivo Alaves star sent in a long range shot which surprisingly went through the legs of Ethiopia goalkeeper Tekelemariam Shanko.

The goal marked Wakaso’s 13th international goal for Ghana in 59 matches since making his debut in 2012 for the Black Stars.

After the break, Ethiopia coach Wobetu Abate who was very furious changed goalkeeper Shanko for their substitute goalkeeper to take charge.

The Black Stars pushed men upfront to look for the goal which would have given them a cushion but the Ethiopians defence were resolute.

Ghana made a double substitution by the 68th minute as Yaw Yeboah and Dainel Lomotey replaced Kamaldeen Sulemana and goalscorer Mubarak Wakaso respectively.

Ethiopia nearly found the equaliser by the 83rd minute but goalkeeper Ofori made a wonderful effort to save the ball.

Six minutes later, former Asokwa Deportivo youngster Joel Fameye replaced Jordan Ayew but the his impact wasn’t felt as it was too little to late.

Ghana held on to carry the day despite an unimpressive performance. The Black Stars will leave Cape Coast on Saturday morning to Accra and then travel to Johannesburg, South Africa for the game against Bafana Bafana at the Soccer City Sports Stadium on Monday.

A 24-year-old single mother of 3 children jailed for stealing neighbour’s Ghc5 could not hold back tears as she narrated how she had no means to feed her hungry children on that fateful day

Akua Akyaa recounted her ordeal to Crime Check TV GH at the Kumasi Central prison where she was spending her jail term without having any idea how her three young kids were faring in her absence.

According to her, she was working at a certain chop bar where she was being paid Ghc5 until the owner of the business asked her to stay home temporarily because her daughter who had returned from school would be helping her for time being.

Life then became unbearable for Akya and her children she had with two different men, all of whom have abandoned her.

She was compelled to pick a neighbour’s Ghc5 to buy food for her hungry children one day without asking first, and it brought about an altercation.

The argument escalated into a fight during which she injured the neighbour with a blade she could lay her hands on, to defend herself against the neighbour who she said had overpowered her.

Akya was arrested by the police following a complaint by the neighbour and was subsequently put before a court.

The judge, according to her, slapped a fine of Ghc1,200 on her and further ordered her to pay Ghc1,000 compensation to her neighbour.

Due to her failure to raise the Ghc2,200 total cost, the judge sentenced her to two months imprisonment.

Fortunately, a kindhearted individual has paid the said cost through Crime Check TV GH, leading to her eventual liberation.

Mariano Baretto to leave Asante Kotoko by mutual consent after board meeting on Thursday

The 64-year-old coach has agreed to sever ties with the Porcupine Warriors outfit after a tumultuous relationship with the club’s top hierarchy

Asante Kotoko head coach Mariano Baretto is set to leave the club by mutual consent after just six months at the helm of the club, AshesGyamera.com can exclusively report.

The news came following the all-important board meeting on Thursday at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Kumasi despite the Portuguese tactician guiding the Porcupine Warriors to a second-placed finish in the Ghana Premier League and reaching the quarterfinals of the FA Cup last season.

Baretto after an incredible start to his short stay in Ghana, is known to have a frosty relationship with Kotoko chief executive officer Nana Yaw Amponsah and reportedly blocked the latter’s phone calls and messages before he left the country.

The Portuguese coach, who once upon a time was in charge of Ghana, gave an interview to Nhyira FM last month, claiming he was surprised that Kotoko lacked basic infrastructures that make a club big.

He added that he did not have an office to work from and never set foot at the club’s secretariat. He later revealed that players and officials at the club had to ease themselves in the bush during training session since there are no toilet facilities at the Adako Jachie training ground.

These comments, together with Kotoko failing to win a trophy and qualify to play in Caf inter-club competitions after the season, made a section of the supporters called Kotoko Ultras to officially make their displeasure known about his continuous association with the club.

AshesGyamera understands that the board agreed to pay off Baretto in order to be able to appoint a new manager in the coming days.

The meeting continued and the board invited the leadership of National Circles Council around 13:35pm for deliberation on how to go about the supporters census.

The meeting between the board and NCC lasted until around 3:13pm before they also came out with smiles on their faces since they were given the green light to begin their Supporters Census to know the number of registered supporters of the club.

At around 3:15pm, the board of directors invited chief executive officer Nana Yaw Amponsah, who arrived at the venue with his right hand man Bishop and Kotoko acting communication director David Obeng.

However, it was only Amponsah who was called inside for a review and report of Kotoko’s performance last season which also happened to be his first tenure in office. The meeting lasted until around 4:25pm before he came out.
