‘My tactics & strategy will work against South Africa’- Akonnor assures Ghanaians

The Black Stars will take on the Bafana Bafana on Monday afternoon in a cliffhanger encounter but Charles Akonnor believes he will be up to the task

Ghana coach Charles Kwablah Akonnor has insisted that his tactics and strategies will work to perfection against South Africa in the second game of Group G in the ongoing 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.

The Black Stars struggled to defeat Ethiopia 1-0 in the opening game last week at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium thanks to Wakaso Mubarak’s long range effort.

After the game, a lot of Ghanaians launched a scathing attack on Akonnor and his players for their shambolic performance but he has assured them of an improved outing at the Soccer City Sports Stadium against South Africa.

“What is important is that we have to be efficient. Against Ethiopia, we didn’t excite you guys but we were efficient and it’s because we won. As we speak now, we are on top of the table and so we are not going to allow influence of outside pressure to disturb us,” Akonnor said

“Like I said, we are focused, we are here, we have seen South Africa against Zimbabwe, we have a strategy and we believe that it will work.

“We believe that even if they change their style of play we have an antidote to it and we will move out of this place with three points,” he added.

Ghana will miss the services of seven players who played a part in the win against Ethiopia when they come up with South Africa. They include Baba Rahman, Jordan Ayew, Jeffrey Schlupp, Andy Yiadom, Daniel Amartey, Kamaldeen Sulemana and Kofi Kyereh Daniel.

The Black Stars currently tops Group G with three points, two points above South Africa who shared the spoils goalless with Zimbabwe.

The next round of matches will be played in October and Ghana will host Zimbabwe while South Africa travel to Addis Ababa to lock horns with Ethiopia.

Winners of each of the ten groups will be paired after the second round of the qualifiers for a knockout phase in order to select five countries which will represent Africa at the next World Cup to be staged in Qatar.

‘I don’t follow social media criticisms; Ghana will silence South Africa’ – Black Stars deputy captain

Deputy Black Stars captain Richard Ofori will play against his peers from the South African Premier League if given the nod by Coach Charles Akonnor in Ghana’s World Cup qualifier against Bafana Bafana at the FNB stadium in Johannesburg.

The Orlando Pirates goalkeeper has been speaking to the media ahead of the match. The full transcript is captured below.

On thoughts about the game

This game is very important not for only me but the entire nation. We know how Ghanaians love the game and how important it is to win this match. Because we want to go to the World Cup, that’s the stage that every player wants to play so it’s very important for the team and the Nation. I am going to face most of players that I know very well. I know their qualities, they are very good. But at the end of the day we need to show that we are Ghana and the most important are, we need to win.

On playing in South Africa and whether it plays to Ghana’s advantage

We can’t say we have an advantage over them because these days football has changed. Everyone knows how to play, all the countries have developed and a case in point is the recent AFCON in Egypt where Madagascar shocked the world. But it’s a matter of who wants it more.

On what is on the minds of his colleagues

I know my colleagues, we have been together for a couple of days and we want it badly so at the end of the day it’s just a matter of who wants it more so it is determination and we are determined and we hope everything will go well on the field of play so that at the end of the fay we will make our country proud.

On social media comments and criticisms

In the first place, I don’t read those things though. I don’t go on social media or Twitter to read those things. I haven’t seen something about me before; I haven’t seen something about me before. But definitely we are in a country that expects more from us so wearing this jersey means a lot because the people expects more.

On winning and not necessarily playing well

The things our predecessors did have made things what it is today. That is the nature of our country, so you need to adapt to the pressure and make sure you make them proud by winning. One thing I understand in the game is that, all the big teams in the World, it’s not a matter of how well you play; it’s a matter of who is winning and who has won trophies, which is the most important thing that everyone talks about. So the most important thing is to understand that as a nation we need to win as a team. The victory is the most important thing, so we go in, we hope everything goes well and hopefully we carry the three points.

Hearts of Oak to know their fate in Champions League after soldiers claim to seize power in Guinea

The fate of Guinea’s President Alpha Condé is unclear after an unverified video showed him surrounded by soldiers, who said they had seized power.

They appeared on national TV claiming to have dissolved the government and that could affect the Caf Champions League game between CI Kamsar of Guinea and Hearts of Oak from Ghana which was scheduled to take place in Conakry on September 12.

Although, Caf has indefinitely scheduled the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifier between Guinea and Morocco which was slated for Monday, September 5 in Conakry, they were silent on the Champions League clash.

However, the defence ministry said the attempted takeover had been thwarted by the presidential guard.

This follows hours of heavy gunfire near the presidential palace in the capital, Conakry.

UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres has condemned the apparent coup and demanded the immediate release of President Condé.

The West African country of Guinea is rich in natural resources but years of unrest and mismanagement mean it is one of the world’s poorest countries.

President barefoot on a sofa

The TV address featured nine unnamed soldiers, several draped in the red, gold and green national flag, who said they had taken over because of rampant corruption, mismanagement and poverty.

Calling themselves the National Committee for Reconciliation and Development, they said the constitution had been dissolved and that there would be consultations to create a new, more inclusive one.

Numerous reports say the coup was led by an elite unit headed by a former French legionnaire, Lt Col Mamady Doumbouya.

In one video, which the BBC has not been able to verify, soldiers ask President Condé, 83, to confirm he is unharmed but he refuses to respond.

Sitting barefoot on a sofa wearing jeans and a printed shirt, he does not have any visible injuries. His current whereabouts are unknown.

Those behind the coup said that all land and air borders had been closed for a week.

However, according to the defence ministry, forces loyal to the president have “contained the threat and repelled the group of assailants”.

Earlier, the only bridge connecting the mainland to the Kaloum peninsular, which houses most ministries and the presidential palace, was sealed off while many soldiers, some heavily armed, were posted around the palace, a military source told Reuters news agency.

There are unconfirmed reports that three soldiers have been killed.

As a result of the unrest, Guinea’s football World Cup qualifying match against Morocco at home on 6 September has been postponed.

Football body FIFA said the decision was made to “ensure the safety and security of all players and to protect all match officials”.

President Condé was re-elected for a controversial third term in office amid violent protests last year.

The veteran opposition leader was first elected in 2010 in the country’s first democratic transfer of power. Despite overseeing some economic progress, he has since been accused of presiding over numerous human rights abuses and harassment of his critics.

However, majority of Ghanaians were not impressed with the general performance of the team amid the victory especially defender Abdul Baba Rahman, Jordan Ayew and Jeffrey Schlupp.

In spite of the complaints, Ayew believes the players did their best especially when they played in front of few Ghanaian supporters due to Covid-19 restrictions.
