REPORTS: Ghana FA to appoint Bernhard Lippert as interim Black Stars coach

The German could be in charge of the national team until the end of the week before a new coach will be permanently appointed

Ghana FA may likely announce that Bernhard Lippert will take over as Black Stars coach on the interim until a new coach is appointed.

The 63-year-old, who arrived in the country as the technical director of the football association, could take over from Charles Kwablah Akonnor who was sacked on Monday.

Akonnor was relieved of his position following Ghana’s 1-0 away defeat to South Africa in the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers last week.

The former Asante Kotoko coach, who took over from Kwesi Appiah in January 2020, played 14 games with the Black Stars and could only manage to pick four wins while four games also ended in a defeat, and two of those games ended in a stalemate.

Akonnor was sacked together with his two assistants David Duncan and Patrick Greveraars and Lippert is expected to work with the goalkeeping coach and other technical team members left in the interim.

Meanwhile, Ghana FA has appointed a three-member committee comprising of Vice President of Ghana FA Mark Addo, Upper East Regional Football Association Chairman, Alhaji Salifu Zida and Dr Randy Abbey to find a head coach and assistant coaches for the Black Stars within the next 72 hours.

Ghana will play Zimbabwe in the Fifa World Cup qualifiers next month. The Black Stars will host Zimbabwe on October 5 at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium before they travel to Harare for the return fixture four days later.

Reports in the local media suggest that former Zambia and Ivory Coast coach Herve Renard could be in line to replace Akonnor.

BREAKING NEWS: Ghana FA sacks C.K Akonnor and his assistant coaches; check the reasons

The country’s football governing body has official parted ways with the Black Stars coach after only fourteen games in charge

Ghana Football Association has announced their decision to sack Black Starts head coach C.K Akonnor and his assistant coaches on Monday.

The 47-year-old took over from Kwesi Appiah last year after Ghana failed to win the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations held in Egypt.

However, Akonnor has failed to live a remarkable mark as the Black Stars have been struggling to exert themselves in games or display quality football.

The Black Stars have won only one of their last four games played under Akonnor. He won only four games after playing fourteen matches with four ending in a defeat and two in stalemate.

“The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association has taken a decision to terminate the appointment of Black Stars Coach Charles Akonnor and his two Assistants with immediate effect,” a Ghana FA statement read.

“This follows the receipt of the Technical Report from the Head Coach of the Senior National Team and the report from the Black Stars Management Committee following Ghana’s Group G World Cup qualifying matches against Ethiopia and South Africa.

“The Executive Council after considering the two reports have decided to terminate its relationship with Head Coach C. K Akonnor and the two Assistants.

“The Executive Council has formed a three (3) Member Committee made up of Vice President Mark Addo, Upper East Regional Football Association Chairman, Alhaji Salifu Zida and Dr. Randy Abbey to find a Head Coach and Assistant Coaches for the Black Stars within the next 72 hours.

“The Association wishes C.K Akonnor and his Assistants the very best in their future endeavours.

Ghana currently have three (3) points after the two opening matches.

“The Black Stars will take on Zimbabwe in the next round of games in October 2021,” the statement added.

AshesGyamera’s sources have revealed that an expatriate coach will likely replace Akonnor and former Ghana assistant coach Herve Renard is highly tipped to take over the mantle.

Hearts of Oak to unveil new ‘masterclass’ jersey ahead of Caf Champions League clash

The Phobians are set to outdoor their new kits for the 2021/22 season before they face the Guinean side in Caf Champions League

Ghana Premier League winners Hearts of Oak will be unveiling their new kits for the 2021/22 season this week as they prepare to participate in Caf Champions League.

The Phobians, who are kitted by popular sportswear company Umbro has been using one jersey for two seasons which has raised a serious backlash

However, the club’s director of communications, Kwame Opare Addo, has revealed that they will be outdooring a new jersey before they host CI Kamsar in the preliminary of the Caf Champions League on Sunday.

“When they see the new kits it will blow their minds. We will wear another jersey and everybody will see it,” Opare told Asempa FM in an interview.

“The kind of jersey we will wear will be unveiled at the right time when we invite the press.

“We haven’t terminated our contract with Umbro as it is been speculated in the media,” he added.

Hearts’ bitters rival Asante Kotoko unveiled their new jerseys a fortnight ago which got the whole country talking about them.

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS: Hearts of Oak suffer another home defeat ahead of Champions League clash

The Phobians were shocked in a five-goal thriller by Premier League newcomers in Accra

Ghana’s sole representatives in Caf Champions League Hearts of Oak suffered a shocking 3-2 defeat to Ghana Premier League new side Accra Lions at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday ahead of the Caf Champions League game against Guinean side CI Kamsar.

Due to the political unrest in Guinea, CAF announced that there will be a one-off game in Accra on Sunday, September 19, to determine the winner.

Accra Lions took the lead very early in the first half but Daniel Afriyie Barnieh who was recently called to the Black Stars scored the equaliser.

Before the break, Hearts had their noses in front through Isaac Mensah.

The striker sent out a powerful shot which went past Lions goalkeeper Appiah Kubi by the 43rd minute.

However, the Premier League debutants restored parity.

Accra Lions pushed men forward in search of the winner and Rauf Salifu finally got it for them. The forward calmly latched onto a pass from his teammate and sent the ball past the Hearts goalkeeper.

This is the second game the Phobians have lost as they were also beaten by Togolese champions ASKO de Kara in a friendly last week Monday.

Zimbabwe sack former Kotoko coach Zdravko Lugarosic ahead of Ghana clash

The Warriors will be without the Croatian manager when they face Black Stars next month in the World Cup qualifiers

Ghana will face Zimbabwe, who will be without their head coach Zdravko Lugarosic, in the third game of Group G of 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers on October 5 and 9 in Cape Coast and Harare respectively.

The former Asante Kotoko boss, who was infamously sacked by supporters led by Seidu Mba, has been in charge of Zimbabwe since last year and has played 14 games.

Unfortunately, and Zimbabwe have picked just a win in 14 games, losing eight and sharing the spoils in five of them.

After their last 1-0 defeat against Ethiopia in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, a lot of pressure was mounted on the football association’s president to sack Lugarosic and he has officially sacked on Sunday.

Reports suggest that a local coach will officially be unveiled this week to take over and see if he can turn their poor campaign around.

Zimbabwe have only one point from two games and a win against Ghana could breath life back into their chances of qualifying to the mundial.

Ghana sit second in Group G with three points after the defeat to leaders South Africa in Johannesburg and Charles Kwablah could also lose his position as Ghana coach if he fails to win the two games against Zimbabwe.

Gyasi impresses in Spezia Calcio’s home defeat against Udinese in Serie A

The Ghanaian had a decent game for the Little Eagles as they ended up with a narrow defeat against the Zebras at home

Ghana midfielder Emmanuel Gyasi was in action when Spezia Calcio suffered a 1-0 home defeat against Udinese in Serie A on Sunday.

The 27-year-old was handed a starting place in Spezia’s squad and lasted 85 minutes before he was substituted after picking up an injury.

Gyasi came close to opening the scoring for Spezia in the first half when he combined with Ebrima Colley.

After the break, substitute Daniele Verde went past two defenders but his last ditch pass to Gyasi for the Ghanaian to have a shot on target was blocked.

Gyasi was substituted by the 86th minute mark for Eddie Anthony Salcado when he signalled the technical team of a knock he had suffered earlier.

With a minute to end the game, Jean-Victor Makengo set up Lazar Samardžić to score the only goal of the game and break the hearts of the home supporters.

Gyasi was part of the Ghana squad that played against Ethiopia and South Africa in the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers. He, however, didn’t not make an appearance in any of the games due to an illness he suffered in camp.

Naby Keita blasts ‘uncultured’ Mariano Baretto for making rubbish statement about Asante Kotoko

The Porcupine Warriors departed striker believes his former manager’s comment about the club was out of order and must be condemned

Former Asante Kotoko striker Naby Keita has launched a scathing attack on former coach Mariano Baretto following his recent media war with the club.

Baretto, 64, criticized Kotoko’s poor administrative structure and system and revealed that the club lacks basic infrastructures including washrooms for players and office for coaches and other technical members.

However, Keita, who left the club last week following the expiration of his contract, insists such comments should not have been made public by the coach since it goes a long way to tarnish the hard won reputation of the club.

“If the coach said that Asante Kotoko is not having a toilet then why did he come to work at the club?” Keita quizzed in an interview with Ghanasportspage.

“He should know that he is disgracing the club and himself. He shouldn’t have come out to say this because he knew that Kotoko didn’t win the league and he came out with this. It is not necessary.

Keita argued that Baretto was using this tactics to cover up his failure to win a trophy for Kotoko.

“CK Akonnor was there, he was here, we were not having a toilet but we won the Special Competition and entered the group stages of the CAF Confederations without a toilet at the training ground. So what’s he talking about? He should stop being a coach,” he said.

“He talks and I listen to what he says but about Kotoko’s toilet issues are rubbish.

“All of them were rubbish,” he added.

Keita, who joined Kotoko in 2018, fell down the pecking order under Baretto season and the Guinean international made a handful of appearances for Kotoko as a result.

Yunus Musah explains why he chose United States national team over Ghana & England

The youngster has shed light on why he opted to represent the Yanks despite interest from Ghana Football Association

United States of America midfielder of Ghanaian descent Yunus Musah has revealed that he opted to represent them ahead of his parents’ country because of their ambitions.

Born and raised in New York to Ghanaian parents, Yunus, 18, was also moved England where he football desires and skills were nurtured in a world class standard.

Although, Ghana and England FA made an approach to snap him for their various junior national teams, Yunus opted to represent United States and he believes that was the best decision.

“It is a pride to go to the United States team. It is a group that I love to be with. It is a team that wants to do many things and we are sure to grow together,” Musah told Valencia’s media in an interview.

Yunus plies his trade with La Liga side Valencia and has swapped his jersey for the new season after recovering from an injury.

“There were 4 and 19. In England it is usual to wear 4, 8 or 10 if you play in the middle and since I already had 4 in England once, I thought about choosing 4,” he said.

“I am a midfielder. Last year I played on the wing. You have to play wherever and it is good to improve in many places and improve in many positions.

“With the lower categories of England I played in the middle and in the United States team, too. I really like to play in the middle, but if you have to play in another position, nothing happens

OtumfoƆ invites Osikani Kwame Kyei and other Asante Kotoko board members to Manhyia today; check the main agenda

The Porcupine Warriors owner is believed to have surmoned the club’s highest decision body to appear before him for deliberations

Asante Kotoko owner OtumfoƆ Osei Tutu II is believed to have scheduled an emergency meeting with the club’s board of directors at Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Saturday, according to AshesGyamera.com‘s sources.

All interested parties have been duly notified of the meeting which kicks off exactly at 11 am on Saturday.

This has become necessary following the alleged bad blood between board chairman Osikani Kwame Kyei and chief executive officer Nana Yaw Amponsah as well as a section of the board members.

It is believed that Osikani Kyei has deliberately excused himself from the last two board meetings held to plan the future of the club because of some misunderstanding between him and the CEO which he believes the latter has the backing of some of the board members.

Although, Kotoko are expected to kick start their pre-season ahead of the commencement of Ghana Premier League in October, a lot of things seem not working as the future of even the club’s head coach Mariano Baretto is unknown.

Also, several first team players are having contracts which will expire in the coming months with no negotiations for an extension done because of the uneasiness among the leaders.

Moreover, Kotoko’s recruitments have been slow this season than ever with the club officially yet to sign even one player less than six weeks to the start of new season.

Reports suggest that even the supporters leadership has even been divided making things murkier than expected some few weeks ago.

All the twelve board members including vice chairman Jude Arthur, Kwadwo Boateng Gyamfi, Alhaji Abu Lamin, Kwamena Mensah and Joseph Yaw Addo are expected to arrive at Manhyia with Kwame Kyei before the meeting with Otumfuo commences.

The others include Evelyn Nsiah Asare, Baffour Kwame Kusi, Kofi Amoah Abban, Martin Osei Kwaku Brobbey and James Osei Brown.

One of the major issues to be discussed will be the alleged grand agenda to run Kotoko down by one private radio station in Kumasi owned by the board chairman and the lawsuit on the radio station by board member Evelyn Nsiah Asare for allegedly tarnishing her hard won reputation.
