Medeama sign Kotoko striker Akese Akese until 2025

The youngster has sealed a four-year deal with the Yellow and Mauve following a splendid performance last season

Ghana Premier League giants Medeama have signed Nzema Kotoko striker Akesse Akesse in a four-year deal, the two clubs have confirmed on Thursday.

The 21-year-old had a solid outing with Nzema Kotoko last season in Zone Two of Ghana Division One League. He scored 12 goals and provided nine assists after 25 matches to help the club to move from the relegation battle to finish fourth on the log.

Akesse has been on the radar of Medeama for some time now with coach Ignatius Fosu finally grabbing his man.

Akesse admitted his happiness to join Medeama and added that he is ready for the challenge next season.

“I am super thrilled to start this new challenge with Medeama. I have been looking forward to it and am happy it has finally happened,” he told the club’s website.

“I am one of you and I can’t wait to start working with the rest of the group. I am looking forward to meeting my teammates and ensuring that we excel for our supporters.

“I can’t wait to wear the shirt and give more than 100%,” he added.

Medeama CEO James Essilfie also spoke highly of the youngster’s qualities and insisted he will be a success at the club.

“We welcome Akesse Akesse to the Club and believe that he will thrive under our environment. We have absolute confidence in his talent and quality and we believe he will suit our plans.

“He is a proven goalscorer who will thrive immensely on the Medeama platform.

“We want to challenge for honours from all fronts and are looking to build a team that can compete and erase last season’s heartbreak.”

Akesse joins Seth Sowah and Kofi Ansu Patrick as the recruits for Medeama ahead of the new season.

BREAKING NEWS: Felix Annan terminates Asante Kotoko contract after ten years; check where he is going

The shot-stopper has departed the Porcupine Warriors, bringing to an end a ten-year stay at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium

Asante Kotoko has mutually terminated their contract with captain Felix Annan ahead of the start of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League season, AshesGyamera.com can reveal.

The 26-year-old joined the Porcupine Warriors in 2011 as a teenager from Gomoa Fetteh Feyenoord Academy and although he was sent out to several clubs on loan, he later rose through the ranks to become the club’s captain.

However, he fell out of favour with the club’s former coach Maxwell Konadu last season and although Konadu was sacked midway, Annan later fell out with the club’s top hierarchy despite the arrival of Portuguese manager Mariano Baretto.

He thus lost his place to Kwame Baah and later Razak Abalora and that even affected his involvement in the senior national team since he was later dropped from the Black Stars.

Although Annan stayed on and tried to fight for a starting place in Kotoko’s squad, it proved fruitless and he has decided to leave the club after ten years. He has become the third player to leave Kotoko after Augustine Okrah and Naby Keita.

Annan, who is currently in United Kingdom, is expected to join his wife and could leave for United States of America in the coming days. Should his plans of securing a club abroad fails, he could highly join Medeama as a free agent ahead of the new season.

He made his Ghana debut in 2019 against Namibia in an international friendly.

‘Akonnor wasn’t a leader & tough coach as he was tossed around,’ says former GFA president

The country’s former football chief insists C.K Akonnor was not having the requisite qualities to handle the Black Stars that was why he failed to live up to the expectations

Former Ghana Football Association president Dr Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe says Charles Kwablah Akonnor was not mentally strong to handle the Black Stars.

The 47-year-old was sacked on Monday barely a little over one year in charge of the senior national team due to series of uninspiring performances.

Ghana won only four games out of the ten matches played under Akonnor and the defeat to South Africa in the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifier

“CK Akonnor overstayed. I think he is not a leader,” Tamakloe told Metro TV.

“If he tries to lead it fails. A coach must be tough so boys don’t toss him about.

“To work for the government seven months and salaries were unpaid, official car denied him, his residence given to another person, I would have resigned.

“I think he should have resigned from the position. He held on until they sacked him and I believe that was a wrong decision for him. You have to be mentally strong to hold big positions like a national team coach,” he added.

Following Akonnor’s departure, more than fifty coaches across the globe have officially applied for the vacant position. However, reports suggest that former Ghana coach Milovan Rajavic will likely be given the nod with a monthly salary of $45,000.

Ghana will face Zimbabwe in a double header of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers next month.

Edmund Addo marks Uefa Champions League debut with victory over Shakhter Donetsk

The youngster was a delight to watch as his side made history in the group stage of the Uefa Champions League

Ghanaian midfielder Edmund Addo was an outstanding performer when debutants FC Sheriff shocked Shakhter Donetsk 2-0 in the Uefa Champions League on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old, who joined Sheriff from FK Senica this summer, was handed a starting berth and his performance was very crucial for Sheriff who picked their first-ever win in the group stage of the competition.

Addo started the game and lasted 85 minutes before he was substituted for tactical reasons by his coach.

The Ghanaian was given a standing ovation for his incredible performance as he had 95 per cent passing success throughout his stay on the pitch.

Out of the total passes he gave, 18 of them were accurate passes and he also won four duels and lost 8. He had the joint-highest tackles and interceptions.

FC Sheriff has made history as the first club from Moldova to reach the group stage of the competition as well winning a game.

Addo is one of the players being monitored by Ghana Football Association for the next World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe in October.

Sowah glitters ahead of PSG’s Messi & Neymar in Uefa Champions League

The youngster was a delight to watch as he put up a spirited performance against a star studded PSG side on Wednesday

Ghanaian international Kamal Sowah was very impressive for Belgian giants Club Brugge when he marked his Uefa Champions League debut against PSG in a 1-1 draw at the Jan Breydel Stadion on Wednesday evening.

The 21-year-old joined Club Brugge from Premier League side Leicester City this summer and has instantly been drafted into the team as a starter by coach Paul Clemente.

Former Manchester United star Ander Herrera gave PSG the lead after just fifteen minutes into the game with a calm finish.

Club Brugge, however, restored parity by the 27th minute through their captain Hans Vanaken against the run of play.

Sowah then set up two of his teammates in the first half but they could not send their last ditch efforts beyond PSG goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

After the break, Sowah nearly scored his debut goal for Brugge after he found himself in a good position but surprisingly smashed a rebound hige and wide.

With PSG having Lionel Messi, Mbappe and Neymar as well as other high profile names in their setup, Sowah’s performance was able to distinguish and brought him to the limelight.

Club Brugge will lock horns with RB Leipzig in the second game of the group next two weeks while PSG will welcome Manchester City to the Parc des Prince before club football comes on break for international football.

Sowah will likely make the Ghana squad that will face Zimbabwe in the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers to be played on October 5 and 9 in Cape Coast and Harare respectively.

Zimbabwe to face Black Stars with new tactician Mapeza next month

The 49-year-old has returned to take over the position he once held a decade ago ahead of the crucial World Cup qualifiers

Ghana will face Zimbabwe next month in the third and fourth games of 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium and Harare respectively.

Ahead of the games, Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has announced that Norman Takanyariwa Mapeza will be the new head coach of the national team following the sacking of Croatian Zdravko Logarusic last week after the 1-0 defeat to Ethiopia in Adis Ababa.

Mapeza, who is currently the head coach of FC Platinum, is expected to combine both club and international duties before a decision on his future are taking.

He once held this position in September 2010 and November 2018 when Zimbabwe sacked their then head coach following series of uninspiring results.

“Yes I can confirm that we have agreed he (Mapeza) will be in charge for the next three months. His club had given us the green light and he is coming in because there is a crisis. He has also named his assistants,” the coach’s manager Gibson Mahachi confirmed.

Former Premier League star Benjani Mwaruwari, who was appointed as one of Logarusic’s assistant coaches during the matches against South Africa and Ethiopia was not considered for a similar role under Mapeza.

The former Galatasaray player will be making his third stint as Warriors coach after a stint as a substantive coach then on an interim basis in 2018.

As interim national team coach three years ago, Mapeza led the Warriors in their famous 3-0 victory over Liberia which set the foundation for the team’s qualification for the 2019 AFCON finals held in Egypt.

Meanwhile, Ghana has also sacked their head coach Charles Kwablah Akonnor and his two assistants.

A new head coach is expected to be announced within the week and reports suggest that Milovan Rajevac will return to the country after leading the Black Stars to reach the quarterfinals of the 2010 Fifa World Cup staged in South Africa.

Kotoko legend expresses interest to coach Ghana; ready to take just 20% of Akonnor’s salary

The former African Footballer of the Year has expressed his readiness to take over the role as Black Stars coach

Former Ghana midfielder Abdul Karim Razak has insisted he is the right man to coach Black Stars following Charles Kwablah Akonnor’s departure.

Akonnor was sacked after a little over one year in charge due to inconsistent results and bad play by Black Stars.

As a result, over 50 European coaches have applied for the vacant position including former Guinea and Tunisia boss Alain Giresse but Razak believes he has what it takes to turn Ghana’s World Cup qualifiers around.

“Try me and see for the Black Stars coaching job. I’m ready to accept $5,000 for the Black Stars job,” Abdul Razak told Kumasi-based Ashh FM while adding,

“My favourite formations are 433 and 442. They are attacking football systems and I believe they will suit the kind of players we currently have at the Black Stars,” he added.

Razak was part of the Ghana squad that won the 1978 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana and he has adjudged the Best African Player in 1979.

He has previously managed Stade Malien, Asante Kotoko and was the assistant coach of the Black Stars in 2000.
