The striker proved his mettle once again as he rose above his marker to head in a late winner for Algers in a crucial game
Asante Kotoko former striker Kwame Opoku scored a late winner when USM Alger defeated AC Paradou 2-1 in a local derby in Algerian top-flight at the Stade Omar Hammadi in Algiers on Monday evening.
After an end to end exchanges in the opening eight minutes, it was Alger who had the better advantage to take the lead. Abdelkrim Zouari scored from the spot to give the hosts the lead by the ninth minute when one of his teammates was brought down in the box.
Although, Alger came close several times to double their lead, Paradou defenders were resolute at the back and kept them at bay.
It was on the 89th minute when Paradou nearly broke the hearts of Alger with a late equaliser. Yousri Borzok sent in a long drive from about 25 yards away and it beat everyone to enter the right top corner of the post.
However, Opoku who joined the club in April, proved once again why he is an important figure by snatching the match winner Alger in additional time.
The former Kotoko striker out jumped his marker and perfectly met a cross from a corner to score the winner late in additional time.
The win means that Alger have maintained their fourth position at the moment as they hope to qualify to play in Caf inter-club competitions next season.
Opoku now has four goals after 15 appearances for the Algerian club and he is hoping to hit the double figure mark before the season finally comes to an end.
