Three Ghanaians jailed alongside corrupt prison officer after smuggling drugs & USBs into London prison

Three Ghanaians have been imprisoned alongside a corrupt prison officer after a coordinated operation to smuggle drugs and digital content into a London jail was uncovered

A Metropolitan Police investigation revealed that Jason Thompson, a 34-year-old officer at HMP Isis, abused his position to bring prohibited items into the facility. He was sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court to four years and six months in prison after admitting to misconduct and conspiracy to smuggle contraband. Thompson acted as a key intermediary, linking inmates with external gang members to facilitate the delivery of drugs, mobile phones, and digital media.

The court heard that he earned between £400 and £600 per delivery, with at least 18 successful drop-offs carried out between February and July 2024. The scheme involved a well-organised network operating both inside and outside the prison, working to evade security measures.

Inside the prison, Olusegan Shobanjo played a central role, coordinating activities with his brother Adedayo Shobanjo, who managed operations externally. Together with Andrew Opoku-Edusei, they prepared and supplied USB devices containing Xbox games, television content, and pornography, often customised based on inmates’ requests.

Other members of the group, including Prince Kunado Dwomoh and Nathan Adjei, were heavily involved in distributing cannabis within the prison.

The group used official prison visit bookings to bring in contraband, relying on coded language to avoid detection. However, investigators gathered substantial evidence, including CCTV footage showing exchanges of illegal items. In one incident, Thompson was caught attempting to dispose of contraband in a staff toilet after becoming aware of surveillance.

The operation began to unravel on 13 March 2024, when officers intercepted a package containing cannabis resin. This led to a series of coordinated police actions, resulting in 11 arrests across London and the dismantling of the network.

Sentences were handed down on 2 April, with Olusegan Shobanjo receiving five years, Andrew Opoku-Edusei four years and six months, and Rama Wato two years and ten months. Prince Kunado Dwomoh was jailed for two years and eight months, while Nathan Adjei received two years and six months.

Other individuals had already been sentenced earlier, including Jacques Hamilton, who received two years, and Arian Kaseb, who was jailed for 12 months. Adedayo Shobanjo is yet to be sentenced after admitting his involvement.

Authorities said the case underscores how corruption within the prison system can enable serious criminal activity, while emphasizing that most prison staff uphold high standards. The investigation also highlights how organised crime groups continue to evolve, exploiting weaknesses in secure environments, and the critical role of intelligence-led policing in tackling such operations.
