Sowah glitters ahead of PSG’s Messi & Neymar in Uefa Champions League

The youngster was a delight to watch as he put up a spirited performance against a star studded PSG side on Wednesday

Ghanaian international Kamal Sowah was very impressive for Belgian giants Club Brugge when he marked his Uefa Champions League debut against PSG in a 1-1 draw at the Jan Breydel Stadion on Wednesday evening.

The 21-year-old joined Club Brugge from Premier League side Leicester City this summer and has instantly been drafted into the team as a starter by coach Paul Clemente.

Former Manchester United star Ander Herrera gave PSG the lead after just fifteen minutes into the game with a calm finish.

Club Brugge, however, restored parity by the 27th minute through their captain Hans Vanaken against the run of play.

Sowah then set up two of his teammates in the first half but they could not send their last ditch efforts beyond PSG goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

After the break, Sowah nearly scored his debut goal for Brugge after he found himself in a good position but surprisingly smashed a rebound hige and wide.

With PSG having Lionel Messi, Mbappe and Neymar as well as other high profile names in their setup, Sowah’s performance was able to distinguish and brought him to the limelight.

Club Brugge will lock horns with RB Leipzig in the second game of the group next two weeks while PSG will welcome Manchester City to the Parc des Prince before club football comes on break for international football.

Sowah will likely make the Ghana squad that will face Zimbabwe in the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers to be played on October 5 and 9 in Cape Coast and Harare respectively.

Zimbabwe to face Black Stars with new tactician Mapeza next month

The 49-year-old has returned to take over the position he once held a decade ago ahead of the crucial World Cup qualifiers

Ghana will face Zimbabwe next month in the third and fourth games of 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium and Harare respectively.

Ahead of the games, Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has announced that Norman Takanyariwa Mapeza will be the new head coach of the national team following the sacking of Croatian Zdravko Logarusic last week after the 1-0 defeat to Ethiopia in Adis Ababa.

Mapeza, who is currently the head coach of FC Platinum, is expected to combine both club and international duties before a decision on his future are taking.

He once held this position in September 2010 and November 2018 when Zimbabwe sacked their then head coach following series of uninspiring results.

“Yes I can confirm that we have agreed he (Mapeza) will be in charge for the next three months. His club had given us the green light and he is coming in because there is a crisis. He has also named his assistants,” the coach’s manager Gibson Mahachi confirmed.

Former Premier League star Benjani Mwaruwari, who was appointed as one of Logarusic’s assistant coaches during the matches against South Africa and Ethiopia was not considered for a similar role under Mapeza.

The former Galatasaray player will be making his third stint as Warriors coach after a stint as a substantive coach then on an interim basis in 2018.

As interim national team coach three years ago, Mapeza led the Warriors in their famous 3-0 victory over Liberia which set the foundation for the team’s qualification for the 2019 AFCON finals held in Egypt.

Meanwhile, Ghana has also sacked their head coach Charles Kwablah Akonnor and his two assistants.

A new head coach is expected to be announced within the week and reports suggest that Milovan Rajevac will return to the country after leading the Black Stars to reach the quarterfinals of the 2010 Fifa World Cup staged in South Africa.

The former African Footballer of the Year has expressed his readiness to take over the role as Black Stars coach

Former Ghana midfielder Abdul Karim Razak has insisted he is the right man to coach Black Stars following Charles Kwablah Akonnor’s departure.

Akonnor was sacked after a little over one year in charge due to inconsistent results and bad play by Black Stars.

As a result, over 50 European coaches have applied for the vacant position including former Guinea and Tunisia boss Alain Giresse but Razak believes he has what it takes to turn Ghana’s World Cup qualifiers around.

“Try me and see for the Black Stars coaching job. I’m ready to accept $5,000 for the Black Stars job,” Abdul Razak told Kumasi-based Ashh FM while adding,

“My favourite formations are 433 and 442. They are attacking football systems and I believe they will suit the kind of players we currently have at the Black Stars,” he added.

Razak was part of the Ghana squad that won the 1978 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana and he has adjudged the Best African Player in 1979.

He has previously managed Stade Malien, Asante Kotoko and was the assistant coach of the Black Stars in 2000.

C.K Akonnor finally speaks after being sacked as Ghana coach

The 47-year-old has thanked Ghanaians for allowing him to handle the Black Stars

Former Ghana coach Charles Kwablah Akonnor has thanked Ghana President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo following his sacking.

Ghana FA on Monday stated that Akonnor has been relieved of his duties due to poor results and a three-man committee led by the association’s vice president Mark Addo.

Akonnor could only play 10 games as Ghana coach where he won four, drew two, and lost four. The result that gave him up was the 1-0 defeat to South Africa in the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.

“I’m grateful to H.E President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Sports Ministry, my former boss Kwesi Appiah, the leadership of the GFA, colleagues I worked with, players and Ghanaians for the opportunity to serve,” Akonnor wrote on Twitter.

“Wishing the team all the best. Thank you Ghana,” he added.

Akonnor replaced Kwesi Appiah in January 2020 and was able to qualify the Black Stars to 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. Reports suggest that Akonnor and Ghana FA president Kurt Okraku never saw eye for an eye because his appointment was orchestrated by Youth and Sports minister Isaac Asiamah.

Ghana will host Zimbabwe next month in the World Cup qualifiers at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium before they travel to Harare for the return fixture.

Kotoko board chairman orders Mariano Baretto to return to Ghana and continue his job

The Portuguese manager is expected to arrive in the country in the coming days after reports suggest that he has been told to come and continue his job

Asante Kotoko head coach Mariano Baretto will arrive in Ghana in the coming days to begin pre-season with the club, according to a report filed by Kessben FM.

The 64-year-old, who signed a one-and-a-half-year deal in April, left the country last month after failing to guide Kotoko to win a major trophy last season.

Although reports suggested that Kotoko were ready to mutually terminate his contract, Baretto looks set to have another opportunity to prove himself.

The coach was recently having bad blood between him and chief executive officer Nana Nana Yaw Amponsah which even led to Baretto blocking phone calls and messages coming from Amponsah.

However, board chairman Opanin Kwame Kyei is believed to have spoken to the Portuguese to return to the country as the club has barely six weeks to prepare for the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League season.

Kotoko were closing in on WAFA coach Prosper Ogum Narteh as the replacement for Baretto but the board believes it will be inappropriate to sack the head coach and pay huge compensations to him when they can allow him to continue with his work.

Baretto is expected to arrive in time and take charge of the club’s recruitment of new players for the new season. So far, Kotoko have been able to sign only midfielder Richmond Lamptey from Inter Allies.

No local coach is better to replace Akonnor as Black Stars coach, says Polo

The dribbling magician believes there are no top indigenous coaches to take the top national team job after the sacking of C.K Akonnor

Former Ghana midfielder Mohammed Polo has insisted that no local coach can handle the Black Stars following the sacking of Charles Kwablah Akonnor on Monday.

Akonnor was shown the exit after a poor run of results as he could only manage four wins after 14 games.

Although, reports suggest that Ghana government who pays the national team coaches has insisted only local coached must be appointed, Polo believes the current crop of coaches are not up to the standard since they have not been groomed well.

“We are having a problem because we are not developing our coaches. The FA doesn’t have any criteria for the development processes” Polo told Kumasi based OTEC FM

“Who is coming on board if we decide to go for in for another local coach?

“We will have some things to tell Ghana FA officials should they bring in any foreign coach and he fails. You should empower your local coaches. We need to go deeper, what is happening goes deeper than what we are seeing,” he added.

Reports in the media suggest that one of Otto Addo, Ibrahim Tanko and Karim Zito may be appointed to lead the Black Stars in the game against Zimbabwe in the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers next month.

Behind the scenes: How C.K Akonnor ‘shockingly got the Black Stars job and why he was SACKED

The former player could not end up as a successful coach with the national team, just like at club side, as his reign was tainted with a lot of allegations and speculations

There’s a feeling within the Ghana Football Association that, Akonnor was hired by former Youth and Sports Minister Isaac Asiamah because he proposed him at the Presidency following the decision not to renew the contract of Kwasi Appiah.

When Ghana FA officials notified the ministry of their decision to let go of Appiah, many [people at the ministry] were unhappy. The Normalisation Committee had held discussions with Appiah and was working on renewing his contract.

But, Ghana FA president Kurt Okraku and his team said no. There were serious disagreements.

Eventually, Jubilee House gave in but insisted it must be a local coach.

Three days later, Ghana FA presented a list of three coaches. Interestingly, C.K Akonnor was not one of them.

Simply put, Akonnor was not even part of the top five list of the FA.

Word had it that, lobbying had gone on behind the scenes at the blind side of Ghana FA. During the visit to the Jubilee House to agree on Appiah’s successor, Akonnor’s name came up and it was mentioned by Isaac Asiamah. The Jubilee House, led by President Akufo Addo approved it.

President Akufo Addo reportedly extolled Akonnor’s qualities and said to Kurt Okraku; ‘he has managed Eleven Wise, Hearts of Oak, Asante Kotoko, and even your very own Dreams FC. Give him the job.’

Kurt Okraku was stunned. ‘This was a man I work with so if he’s to be considered, I should have known,’ he reportedly said.

That was the genesis of their issues. Akonnor got a salary of $25,000 per month. GNPC boss Dr KK Sarpong was reportedly not even willing to pay that amount to Akonnor because he believed he did not merit that position and salary.

However, FA said they will work on ensuring he gets the same salary as Kwesi Appiah, but GNPC would have none of that. Eventually, Akonnor had to take the $25k.

Many would recall when Akonnor’s appointment and salary were shared, I added there were some strings attached to the money. Some people were going to get cuts from that money.

When Akonnor made his first Europe, a plethora of things came up including players allegedly giving him money. Akonnor heard allegations and was disappointed. Whether true or not, it was authenticated but the FA had their ears on the ground, too.

He named his first squad in February 2020. Before that squad was released, he was given a list. Akonnor was not willing to budge but new names came up in the call-up.

It is alleged, Kurt Okraku said he won’t spend half a million dollars for someone to market his players through the national so it was not going to happen. Anytime players were called, they will ask him to remove some names and replace them with others.

Okraku and Akonnor’s relationship deteriorated to the extent that, they were not on talking terms. It was at that point Kurt began lobbying to have Akonnor sacked. He tried three times without success. Powerful political hands were on Akonnor and that saved him.

After the failed attempt to sack Akonnor, he invited some players for some games. Najeeb Yakubu and Edmund Ako Mensah were called. The FA president replaced them with Gideon Mensah and Philemon Baffour.

Now, let me give a bit of credence to Akonnor words last year when he was appointed. He said was not going to call players based on names, and it is true. He didn’t want to call Leicester City defender Daniel Amartey. A leader of the FA asked him if he has any player who can play for Leicester?

Amartey had to come eventually. Some of the new players were never invited by Akonnor. They were passed through the Technical Director to get Akonnor to call them in the end. Some of them were Ambrosius, Manaf, Liweling, Kofi Kyereh and Braydon Manu (the player who said he didn’t deserve the Black Stars call up).

Akonnor also had issues with his assistant David Duncan. It is widely speculated that Akonnor did not want Duncan to assist him. Their issues began in Turkey during the friendly matches against Mali and Qatar.

Duncan was at a point not permitted to speak to the Black Stars and the situation was that bad.

If you frequently thronged to their training sessions, you would notice that Akonnor was doing the sessions himself instead of the usual assistant leading it and a lot of people accused him of ‘insecurity’. This happened because Akonnor had given Duncan a session a few minutes before the start of the match against Mali. Duncan wanted to warm the team his way, CK told Duncan in Ga, we won’t do it like that. Andre Ayew ended up leading the warm-up session.

Because of this supposed insecurity, Akonnor reportedly refused to use scouting reports presented to him.

In the South Africa World Cup qualifier which happened to be his last match, an ExCo revealed how Akonnor was presented with a vivid report, but he never used it. The report was so detailed that, the ExCo member said if they had used it, their worst would have been a draw. He was so angry that, he declared he has to go but they needed political clearance.

There were two meetings with high ranking politicians to replace Akonnor. The ministry of youth and sports hadn’t approved as of last Friday, but a meeting this weekend brought CK to his knees, despite disagreements even within the GFA ExCo members.

The new sports minister Mustapha Ussif watched the World Cup qualifiers against Ethiopia and South Africa and was unconvinced, per sources, but he could not easily approve his sacking. He did some consultation, too.

About a week ago, GFA president Kurt Okraku, in the company of Mohammed Jiji Alifo, told some people he knew Akonnor cannot do the ‘job’ as Ghana coach. Eventually, government agreed to Ghana FA’s decision and C.K Akonnor was sacked.
