Ghana captain Jordan Ayew has endured a difficult start to life at Sheffield United, suffering a third successive defeat following the Blades’ 2-1 loss to Stoke City in the Championship at the bet365 Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The 35-year-old forward joined Sheffield United as a free agent a fortnight ago after leaving Leicester and missing any sort of pre-season apart from the games with other semi-retired and retired players in Accra and other towns. Although, his career was given what looks like a last leap, he is still waiting to celebrate his first victory with the Championship side.
Ayew is also yet to register a single shot on target since his arrival, highlighting a challenging start as Sheffield United continue their search for a first win with the Ghanaian in their ranks.
He was an unused substitute when the Blades defeated Charlton Athletic 2-1 before losing 1-0 at home to Wolverhampton, 1-0 away to League Two side Fleetwood Town in the EFL Cup and 2-1 away to Stoke as Ayew featured in all as a second half substitute.
The Blades will now look to turn their fortunes around in their upcoming fixtures after the international break, with Ayew hoping to make a greater impact in attack and help the club end their winless run.
The experienced forward, who has represented Ghana at several major international tournaments, will be keen to rediscover his scoring touch as he adapts to his new surroundings in English football with pressure mounting on coach Chris Wilder to breathe life back into their Premier League qualification campaign.
Ayew has been named as part of Ghana’s 24-man squad for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers double header against Cote D’ivoire and Gambia as well as the international friendly against Morocco on October 4
