Ghana’s former president Jerry John Rawlings has been confirmed dead at the age of 73 by family on Thursday after battling with a short illness at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
The outspoken former head of state was the first president in the fourth republic as he headed Ghana between 1992 and 2000 before John Agyekum Kufour took over.
It was only recently that Rawlings’ mother died and this has come as a major blow to the National Democratic Congress since they looked up to him for inspiration and advise ahead of the general elections next month.
