The Black Stars of Ghana will be without captain Jordan Ayew for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after the forward was ruled out with a knee injury, GhanaSportsCentral can understands.
The Sheffield United attacker, who joined the Black Stars’ camp on Monday evening after arriving from England, underwent further medical examinations after reporting discomfort. Subsequent scans confirmed the problem, forcing him to withdraw from the squad.
Ayew’s absence leaves head coach Carlos Queiroz with another selection headache as he prepares for Ghana’s crucial encounters against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia, having already made several adjustments to his original squad.
The Black Stars are scheduled to travel to Bouaké for their clash with Côte d’Ivoire on September 24 before returning home to face The Gambia in Accra five days later, on September 29.
Initially included in Queiroz’s 24-man squad, Ayew’s late withdrawal means Ghana must navigate the opening fixtures of their AFCON qualifying campaign without their captain.
Ayew joins Kudus Mohammed, Antoine Semenyo, Baba Rahman and a host of other players who have been ruled out of the games due to injury concerns.
