Former Ghana Premier League star Wahab Ackwei has joined Major League Soccer side New York Red Bulls until 2021 as a free agent.
The 21-year-old arrived in the United States from local side Inter Allies after refusing contract extension and has been sent to the club’s junior team for a speedy development in his techniques and adoption to life outside his native country.
Ackwei, a native of Accra, Ghana, joins NYRB II on a free transfer from Inter Allies FC in the Ghanaian Premier League.
“I’m very happy to join the New York Red Bulls,” Ackwei told the club’s website.
“They are one of the biggest clubs in the USA and I’m filled with excitement.”
The youth side of New York Red Bulls’ coach John Wolyniec believes Ackwei will be a great asset in the future after observing him.
“Wahab brings a unique skillset that we feel can adapt to how we play,” Wolyniec said.
“We look forward to helping him integrate within the team as he continues his development here with us.”
Aside Ackwei who scored three goals for Inter Allies last season to help them avoid relegation, Dominic Oduro and Gershon Koffle came through the system at Inter Allies FC before signing for their respective clubs within MLS.
