Ghana president has tasked the police to look into alleged fraudulent conducts by the football association chief

On orders of Ghana president Nana Akufo-Addo, the country’s football association boss Kwesi Nyantakyi is under investigation for a charge of “defrauding under false pretences”, deputy chief of staff Abu Jinapor has confirmed.

The development comes after Nyantakyi was allegedly captured in a video documentary using names of high-ranking government officials to defraud foreign investors.

Produced by renowned Ghanaian investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, the documentary, which has already been previewed by president Akufo-Addo, is set for public screening on June 6.

“The president of the Republic has had the benefit of viewing aspects of the investigative piece by Anas,” Jinapor told a media briefing on Tuesday.

“In this documentary, the president of the Ghana Football Association, Mr Kwesi Nyantakyi is supposedly seen attempting to use the president’s name and that of the vice president and other senior officials of government to induce supposed potential investors into our country to part with various sums of monies.

“The president [of Ghana] is fully satisfied that a prima facie case has been established against Nyantakyi, and has reported a potential crime to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police.

“The president is determined to fight crime and corruption and instill discipline, no matter the stature of the persons involved.”

According to reports, Nyantakyi is currently out of the country, and will likely turn himself in for questioning upon his arrival on Wednesday.

Anas is renowned for his investigative documentaries which seek to expose corruption and underhand deals. His works have seen him win major international awards including the Heroes Acting to End Modern-Day Slavery Award by the US Department of State, the Every Human Has Rights Award in France, the Lorenzo Natali Prize by the European Commission and the KCK Award for excellence in Print Journalism from India.
