The Fire Club will now have to make it to the group stage of the Caf Confederation Cup after a shambolic performance in the Champions League on Sunday
Ghana Premier League champions Aduana Stars suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat in Algeria against ES Setif in the second leg of the Caf Champions League last qualifying round on Sunday, bowing out 4-1 on aggregate.
Heading in to the game, the Dormaa Ahenkro had a slim advantage after picking 1-0 victory at home but were brimming with confidence to make it to the group stages for the first time and earn $550,000 in the process.
However, a brace from Mourad Benayad at an empty Stade 8 1945 Mai, coupled with other goals from Akram Djahnit – his third goal of the campaign – and Abdelhakim Amokrane made sure Setif overturned the first leg defeat and make the group stages for the fifth consecutive times.
Aduana, prior to this game, had never scored in all their two games played away – against Wydad Casablanca in 2011 and Al Tahady in 2018 – and the tradition continued despite impressing in early embers of the game.
The Dormaa Ahenkro-based club, although, are out of the Champions League, will play in the last qualifying round of the Caf Confederation Cup which will be their first time in a bid to make it to the group stage.
Ghana FA Cup champions Asante Kotoko played in the Confederation Cup but we’re kicked out by CARA Brazzaville of Congo.
