The youngster defeated his South American opponent to edge closer to the medal zone
Ghana’s youngest boxer at the 2020 Olympic Games Samuel Takyi has qualified to the quarterfinal round of the Featherweight division after beating his South American opponent Caicedi Carlos, 26 years, on Wednesday morning.
The 19-year-old by a unanimous decision of 5-0 which means that all the judges ruled in his favour following a sterling performance in all the rounds.
In a bout where many Ghanaian pundits feared for Takyi since he was coming up against an opponent who was ranked 17th at the 2019 World Championship and the fifth best in Pan American Games in 2019, he defied all the odds to set up a major upset.
Takyi is the youngest ever amateur boxer in Ghana’s Olympic history and could set yet another enviable record should he win a medal for the country.
He was voted as the 2020 SWAG Amateur Boxer of the Year and even placed third in the Olympic qualifiers which was held in Dakar, Senegal.
In other related news, Ghanaian Anani Sensei Kwadjo has been eliminated from the Olympic Games after he was beaten by a South Korean in the Judo competition.
