Following social media backlash after his recent interview, the Black Stars coach says his earlier comments were misquoted

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah has clarified his comments on Black Stars selection, insisting he was misquoted by the press.

In an interview with Ghanaweb.com, he was quoted as saying that he will only explain his selection procedures to ‘fellow technical people who will understand [not entire Ghanaians]’ and that resulted in a backlash on social media.

However, the 58-year-old has insisted he was taken out of context.

“I have been taken out of contest because I never said that I owe no Ghanaian an explanation on how I select players for the national team,” Appiah told Fox FM .

“I was offered the Black Stars coaching job by Ghanaians so how can I say I don’t owe them any explanation? No wise person will say that or make such a mistake.

“What I said was that, we are in rebuilding period where we call lots of players for assessment, so explaining reasons behind every call up will be difficult.

“But when players are called up for the major tournament (Afcon), by then everyone must have watched the players during the qualifiers to know of their ability. At that time, a press conference can be staged to explain the squad list to all Ghanaians,” he added.

Appiah is expected to name his squad in the coming days to face Sierra Leone next month in the 2019 Afcon Group H qualifier.
